In some countries people even said that the sun was a god(神). They thought the god drove across the sky each day on a golden horse. Now we know the earth goes round the sun. It takes the earth a year to go all way round the sun. Today men even know how far it is for the earth to go round the sun. They tell us that the earth travels over a thousand miles a minute on its journey round the sun. The sun is really a star. It is much bigger than the earth and it is very hot. Some people have been to the moon but we know that no one can ever go to the sun. It is far too hot for people to live anywhere near it. The sun is three hundred thousand times heavier than the earth and more than million times larger.21. BWhen my brother and I were young, my Mom would take us on Transportation Days. It goes like this: you cant take any means of transport more than once. We would start from home walking two blocks to the railway station. Wed take the train into the city center, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi. We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic district, but we didnt like the way the horses were treated, so we never did. At the end of the day, we took the subway to our closest station, where Moms friend was waiting to give us a ride home our first car ride of the day. The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mom taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal(多方式的). She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all, a failure of confidence the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels. Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening any more. New cities are just light-rail lines to be explored. And your personal car, if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet. On Transportation Days, we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy, but the transportation was the point. First, it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As I got older, my Mom helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have paralyzed my first attempts to do it myself: How do I know where to get off? How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, wheres the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river? Im writing this right now on an airplane, a means we didnt try on our Transportation Days and, we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all. My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal Mom met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.24. Which was forbidden by Mom on Transportation Days?AHaving a car ride.BTaking the train twice.CBuying more than one toy.DTouring the historic district.25. According to the writer, what was the greatest benefit of her Transportation Days?ABuilding confidence in herself.BReducing her use of private cars.CDeveloping her sense of direction.DGiving her knowledge about vehicles.26. The underlined word “paralyzed” (in Para. 5) is closest in meaning to “_”.AdisplayedBmisunderstoodCforgotDruined27. Which means of transportation does the writer probably dislike?AAirplane.BSubway.CTram.DCar.CSome people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my familys last vacation. It was my six-year-old sons winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meetings in New York,So I had to get back. But that didnt mean my husband and my son couldnt stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home. The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouragedokay, orderedthem to wait it out at the airport, to earn more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh? Now some people may think Im a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up. Ive made living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBCs Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in. I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your moneys worth. Im also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldnt hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and its the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.28. Why did Delta give the authors family credits?A. They took a later flight. B. They had early bookings.C. Their flight had been delayed. D. Their flight had been cancelled.29. What can we learn about the author?A. She rarely misses a good deal. B. She seldom makes a compromise.C. She is very strict with her children. D. She is interested in cheap products.30 . What does the author do?A. Shes a teacher. B. Shes a housewife. C. Shes a media person. D. Shes a businesswoman.31. What does the author want to tell us?A. How to expose bad tricks. B. How to reserve airline seats.C. How to spend money wisely. D. How to make a business deal.DMost people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals cant talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest. Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They dont make nests. Instead, they get into other birds nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winners hand and start fighting again. Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps dont hear them, and they dont need to share their food. As children, many of us learn the saying You cant fool Mother Nature. But maybe you cant trust her, either. 32. A plover protects its young from a predator by _ A. getting closer to its young B. driving away the adult predator C. leaving its young in another nest D. pretending to be injured 33. By Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky (paragraph 5), the author means _.A. chimps are ready to attack others B. chimps are sometimes dishonestC. chimps are jealous of the winners D. chimps can be selfish too34. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others. B. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winners hand. C. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests. D. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back. 35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Do animals lie? B. Does Mother Nature fool animals? C. How do animals learn to lie? D. How does honesty help animals survive? Bobby Buns was a very amusing and lively waiter who had his own cafe.
