2017届1月份高三阶段性测试英语试卷第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,每小题2分,满分40分)第一节 (共15小题, 每小题2分, 满分30分)A When you are learning a foreign language, one of the hardest things to grasp is how and when to use colloquial idioms(口语习语) and expressions. Often used in both spoken and written language, these idioms are very important. Using one of these phrases correctly when speaking or writing to an English speaker is very impressive. Here are some wonderful British idioms. Use them wisely. 1. Its the bees knees. This expression means that something is of excellence or of very high quality. For example, “Try this chocolate. Its the bees knees.” 2. A penny for your thoughts? This question is used in a situation where someone appears thoughtful or is very quiet seeming lost in thought. But remember that you dont actually have to pay them a penny if they do tell you what is going on! For example, “Youve been a bit quiet this evening, Pete. A penny for your thoughts?” 3. When pigs fly! This expression is one of my favorites and I use it all the time. It is used primarily when speaking, meaning that something is extremely unlikely or impossible. For example, “I will forgive him when pigs fly!” “When do you think you will get a gym membership, Lucy?” “When pigs fly!” 4. To feel a bit under the weather. I use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phrase if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those times when you are feeling a little ill or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. However, this can also be used to refer to feeling emotionally low.21. What would you say if you think something will never happen? A. Its the bees knees. B. A penny for your thoughts? C. When pigs fly! D. To feel a bit under the weather.22. What does “A penny for you thoughts?” mean? A. Can I help you? B. Do you need any money? C. How are you feeling? D. What are you thinking about?23. What is the writer most likely to continue to write in the last paragraph A. A study report B. An exampleC. Another idiom D. The basis of the idiom.24. What is the writers purpose of writing the text? A. To introduce some useful idioms B. To show how to remember idioms. C. To tell people the importance of idioms. D. To give advice on how to learn a foreign language.B That old saying “Never say never” came to mind when I read that Harper Lee, the author of the beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has a new book coming out in July, 201555 years after Mockingbird was published! The very private Ms. Lee had never followed up her highly praised first book, with a second novel. Instead, shes following it up with a first novel. Confused? So was I! Allow me to explain. Go Set a Watchman, was actually written before that classic volume. In the mid-1950s, Lee had completed Watchman, which features Scout Finch as a young woman from Alabama living in New York. The story follows Scout as she returns to visit her father, Atticus, the lawyer who fought racial injustice in Mockingbird. But as Lee herself put it in a recent announcement through her publisher, “my editor, who was taken by the flashback(倒叙)to Scouts childhood, persuaded me to write a novel from the point of view of the young Scout. I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told.” That book was, of course, To Kill a Mockingbird, and after it was released to great praise, Lee never returned to Go Set a Watchman. In fact, that earlier work was considered lost until Lees lawyer found a manuscript(手稿)of it. “After much thought and hesitation I considered it worthy of publication.” said Lee. “I amamazed that this will now be published after all these years.” So the book that gave birth to To Kill a Mockingbird will now serve as its sequel(续集). Its safe to say that, decades after the publication of Mockingbird, millions of readers who were so touched by Ms. Lees second novel will be counting the days until the release of her first one.25. When was Mockingbird published according to the text?A. In 1950 B. In 1960 C. In 1970 D. In 198026. What can we know about the book of Watchman ? A. Atticus found a manuscript of the writer. B. Atticus was a lawyer fighting racial injustice. C. Scout Finch got to Alabama to see Atticus. D. Scout Finch lost one of Atticus manuscripts.27. What does “the book” in the fourth paragraph refer to in the writers opinion? A. Mockingbird B. To Kill a Mockingbird C. Ms. Lees second novel D. Go Set a WatchmanC Shoyna, a small Russian village located on the edge of the arctic circle is often referred to as the worlds northernmost desert. The sand covers everything as far as the eye can see and the few people living here never dare shut their front doors at night, for fear of being buried alive. But itwasnt always like this. Historical records show that Shoyna was settled in the 1930s by fishermen drawn to the coast of the White Sea by the abundance of fish in the area. In just two decades, it had grown into a fishing port with a population of around 1,500 people and a fleet of roughly seventy fishing boats. However, it wasnt long before the fishery collapsed. The dozens of vessels lining the shore stopped coming and many of the families slowly moved away. Today, the official number of inhabitants is 375, most of whom survive on the governments unemployment benefits and pensions. Hunting is also a way to make ends meet, but it is the bulldozer(推土机) driver who earns the most in the village, as everyone needs their house dug up from the sand. Sasha is the only bulldozer driver in the village and he helps people dig out their houses after a windy night. However, he cant help everyone. “It takes ten hours to uncover a house completely, and since one hour of work costs roughly $70, few people can afford my services,” he says. “ Plus, there arent enough hours in a day to help all those in need. I dig one house out, and the others are mad at me.” Apart from having seen many of the houses sinking beneath the sand, locals have also developed physiological problems from constantly having to walk on uneven sand, according tothe local doctor No one knows exactly what moved the sand upon this place, but experts believe it was caused by the local fishermen who cut down most of the trees. There are no roads or railroads connecting Shoyna to the rest of the world, so the only ways in and out of the village are by seaor air. Despite their struggles with the sand and isolation from the world, locals are reportedly very proud of their off-the-grid settlement and very hospitable, inviting visitors into their homes for traditional seafood feasts, despite the lack of fish in the sea.28. What is the biggest trouble that faces the villagers in Shoyna? A ailing to find more trees. BBeing buried alive by sand. CHaving no money to survive. DLacking food to feed themselves.29. What can we know about the life of people in Shoyna A hey live a difficult life. B They make money by driving bulldozers. C They can support themselves by fishing. DThey live on the desert caused by the lack of water.30. Why are some people angry with Sasha? A Because he refuses to work late into the night. B Because he earns the most money in the village. C Because he cant help them dig out their houses. DBecause he never offers free services to the villagers.31. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “hospitable” in the last paragraph? A. confident B. generous C. rich D. reliableD If you make one close friend in school, you will be the most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life. Good friendship is just not easily formed. It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a true friendship to develop. Mr. Darrell Sifford, a news reporter for the Washington Daily, has been studying about friendship for a number of years. He reports what one woman thought about the effects of movement on friendship: “I was nine, and wed just moved to New Jersey, and I didnt know anybody. My mother has a way of getting to the root of things and she said to me, Amelia, I know youre feeling bad because you dont have any friends. But you can fix that. Just walk across the street-I know theres a girl about your age over there- and knock on the door and ask her to be your friend. ”She said that going about it directly always worked when she was a child. But as she left childhood, she found that the simple direct approach was more and more difficult for her to follow. Society teaches us in a number of ways that direct action is not an acceptable way of doing things. We need to be less direct so that our feelings will not be hurt if our offer of friendship is refused. To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to be clear in our own minds the kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or kept at arms length? Do we want to share ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? The sharing of close secrets, including our tears as well as our dark dreams, is the surest way to deepen friendships. But the process must be undertaken slowly and carried on only if there are signs of interest and action in return. What are some of the problems of friendship? The greatest is to expect too much time too soon. Deep relationships take time. Another major difficulty is the selfishness to think one possesses the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships require actions from both sides. . In other words, you must give as much as you take. Finally there is a question of developing friendship. Unless you spend enough time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will gradually fade away. However, there can be no disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want. As in all inter-personal relationships, success depends on the kind of friendship we expect to have, openness to others, and a willingness to experiment.32. What does the author mean by saying that “My mother has a way of getting to the root of things”. A. Her mother could always find friends for her B. A. not be afraid of being refused B. avoid trying to control a friends life C. not take much of a friends time D. not be less direct35. The main point we learn from the passage is _.
