Looking down I immediately recognized that something was wrong and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mothers body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻)against the rocky bank .Then with a huge effort she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment she fell back into the river .If she were carried down ,it would be certain death. I knew as well as she did ,that there was one spot(地点)where she could get up the bank but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mothers love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫)all the time but to her calf it was music.56The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw_.Athe calf was about to fall into the riverBMa Shwe was placing the calf on the rockCthe calf was washed away by the rising waterDMa Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water57How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water?ABy putting it on a safe spotBBy pressing it against her bodyCBy taking it away with herDBy carrying it on her back58How did the calf feel about the mother elephants roaring?AIt was a great comfort BIt was a sign of dangerCIt was a call for help DIt was a musical note59What can be the best title for the text?AA Mothers Love BA Brave ActCA Deadly River DA Matter of Life and DeathBRising above the namesI was shopping in the supermarket when I heard a young voice.“Mom, come here! Theres this lady here my size!”The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to apologize.I smiled and told her, “Its okay.” Then talked to the boy, “Hi, Im Darry Kramer. How are you?”He studied me from head to toe, and asked, “Are you a little mommy?”“Yes, I have a son,” I answered.“Why are you so little?” he asked.“Its the way I was born,” I said. “Some people are little. Some are tall. Im just not going to grow any bigger.” After I answered his other questions, I shook the boys hand and left.My life as a little person is filled with stories like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents. It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness. I stand three feet nine inches tall. I was born an achondroplasia dwarf (侏儒). Despite this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.I didnt realize how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on me, calling me names. Then I knew. I began to hate the first day of school each year. New students would always stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs. But I learned to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed in my whole life. I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I made up for in personality.Im 47 now, and the stares have not diminished as Ive grown older. People are amazed when they see me driving. I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude, I remind myself, “Look what else I have a great family, nice friends.”Its the childrens questions that make my life special. I enjoy answering their questions. My hope is that I will encourage them to accept their peers (a person of the same age, class, position, etc.), whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them with respect.60Why did the mother apologize to the author? ABecause the boy ran into the author.BBecause the boy laughed at the author.CBecause they boy said the author was fatter than him.DBecause the mother thought the boys words had hurt the author.61When did the author realize that she was too short?AWhen she grew up.BWhen she was 47 years old.CWhen she began to go to school.DWhen she met the boy in the supermarket.62Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “diminished”?AdismissedBincreasedCdecreasedDdiscriminated63How does the author feel about peoples stares? A washing machine that uses only a cup of water to carry a full wash, leaving clothes completely dry, has been developed by British inventors. Researchers say the technology, which uses less than 2 percent of the water and energy of a traditional machine, could save billions of litres of water each year. The machine works by using thousands of plastic chips each about half a centimeter in size to absorb and remove dirt. Around 20 kilos of the chips are added to each load, along with a cup of water and detergent(洗涤剂). During the washing cycle, the water is heated to help dissolve the dirt, which is then absorbed by the plastic chips. The inventors say the chips should be removed at the end of each wash, but can be used up to 100 times. The technology, called Xeros, is already being compared to the Dyson bagless vacuum cleaner, which revolutionized the home cleaning industry when it was first introduced to the public in the mid-1990s. If adopted by many homes across the UK, the machine could save billions of litres of water each year. According to data, washing machine use has risen by 23 percent in the past 15 years, up from three times a week in 1990 to an average four times now. The average UK household uses most 21 litres of water daily on clothes washing. Nationally, this equals to approximately 455 million litres of water a day enough to fill 145 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Although the Xeros is currently in the design and testing stage, the inventors say they are in talks with a commercial partner. The machine could be in the market as early as next year. Tests have produced quite astonishing results. “Weve shown that it can remove all sorts of everyday stains including coffee and lipstick while using a tiny fraction of the water used by traditional washing machines,” said one of the inventors. An expert said, “This is one of the most surprising and remarkable technologies Ive encountered in recent years. Xeros has the ability to save billions of litres of water per year and, we believe, the potential to revolutionize the global laundry market. 64. Compared to the traditional washing machine, the most outstanding feature of the Xeros is that _.A. it doesnt need any detergent B. it saves a large amount of waterC. it can remove all sorts of everyday stainsD. the plastic chips can be removed at the end of each wash65. Indifferent D. DoubtfulDReading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions ,as it were,to the text and gets answers. With the help of these, he puts further questions. For most of the time this cocversationgoes on below the level of unconsciousness. At times, however,we become conscious. This is ususlly when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occuring between expectations and the meaning of a text. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level. Different people converse(交流) with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page;others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining them. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents high levels of comprehension.
