Personal StatementMy concern over public health and health science began in 2003 when I was in primary school. Almost overnight, schools were closed, everybody was panic and my parents as doctor became extremely busy-all because of the SARS outbreak in China. The TV news broadcasting the epidemic progress did not appeal to me-I was simply terrified. At that time, two workers coming to our community for epidemiological investigation of suspected SARS cases vividly illustrated me what the SARS is and how to prevent it. That was the first time I had heard of the phrase epidemiological investigation and the first time I had ever known those unsung heroes in and out of the communities for public health. Those public health workers are as great and helpful as those doctors fighting in the forefront against SARS. Indeed, a doctor in a specific hospital has limited targets, while a public health worker can contact and help even more people by publicizing knowledge to prevent diseases. Years later, with the continued perfection of my thoughts, I have made up my mind to become a professional in the realm of health information system development and assessment, dedicating myself to help more people to build more reasonable lifestyles and health concepts.Four years of university study lay a solid foundation for my dream chasing. Considering the limited voluntary professional choices in university application, meanwhile the long ignored importance of physical exercise for health, I chose the health-related Physical Education major. During the undergraduate study, I took many health-related interdisciplinary courses combining medical science and public health. In addition, I actively participated those programs organized by my teachers, such as studying the effect of exercise on the elderly sarcopenia and Assessing the damage of sedentary behavior to the cardiorespiratory fitness. A lot of these programs used the study method of epidemiology, which gave me a preliminary sense of epidemiology. To study epidemiological method systematically, I took two public health professional classes - biomedical statistics and clinical epidemiology, and finally I obtained even better result than many students in this major and gained the recognition of teachers. In my spare time, I applied for the college students scientific research innovation project of Zhejiang province - The impact and countermeasures of air pollution on elementary school students physical activity. In recent years, the worsening haze has seriously affected the life quality of urban residents, so this project is of great practical significance to school administrators in need of scientific management measures. In order to get familiar with public health related application areas, I took an active part in professional internships and research projects during my spare time. From June to September in 2014, I worked as an intern in Tianjin Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (TJCDC). The work mainly involved in the live poultry markets sampling, sample delivery and environmental monitoring, hand-foot-mouth disease epidemiology survey, the data sorting of flu epidemic reports in the first half of year 2014, the control and prevention training meetings of infectious diseases such as influenza and human-avian influenza, and the training data collection of Ebola hemorrhagic fever control and prevention meeting. I learned a lot from the internship about how to apply the epidemiological knowledge to the actual work of disease control and prevention and about those practical work methods, such as the epidemiological investigation, field sampling, sample delivery and training guidance to subordinate units, etc. Such practices not only exercised my practical work skills, but also promoted my understanding of epidemiology from theoretical knowledge to practical operation ability. In addition, I gained a whole new sense of infectious diseases prevention and control work. During the internship, I contacted several common infectious diseases in Tianjin area and participated in the training work of avian influenza and ebola hemorrhagic fever for the CDC and medical institutions of subordinate districts and counties. In the face of a growing epidemic, the work in CDC could be nervous and busy, which required us to constantly update our knowledge in order to overcome the upgrading diseases. The internship also showed me the job responsibilities, divisions and work contents of China CDC at various levels, especially in the provinces (municipalities) level. The staff in such work have to possess leadership and executive ability to get work done well. Thanks to my good performance in the internship, I had the privilege to be recommended to participate in the research project of Risk Factors for Acquisition of Measles Study. It was a cooperation project with university of Michigan funded by NIH (national institutes of health), which mainly adopted the case-control method to study the risk factors and antibody levels of family matches and healthy community crowd in measles infection. This study aimed at searching for measles infection risk factors, namely the individual characteristics (age, gender, level of education), contact living environment, measles contact history, and the relationship between immunization and measles infection risk. I took part in the field work to the neighborhood (village) committee for the control group survey. After visiting five village committees, I took charge of the data entry and data sorting work, which required to input data by Epidata to establish the database and analyze basic data by SPSS software. Data entry work needed to be precise, any data error might cause the wrong outcome. By carefully checking, I found out several data errors in the entry process, which enabled the teacher to contact respondents, verify information and correct the mistakes. In the data sorting work, I analyzed some basic demographic information using SPSS, including the sample statistics using descriptive statistical methods and the demographic differences between case group and control group using t test. Although these statistical methods were simple, that was my first time to use such massive real data for statistical analysis.Professional internship and research projects have greatly broadened my horizon and lead me to urgently pursue a further comprehensive development in the public health field. I am especially concerned over the chronic epidemiology. Modern medical technology has developed rapidly, but still there are a lot of diseases, especially chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cancer, obesity, etc., posing a great threat to human health. In addition to genetic and biological factors, these chronic diseases are largely influenced by social and psychological factors, especially exercise, diet, smoking, drinking and other lifestyles. To solve these problems, we need population-based interventions on health behavior and concept with the help of public health approaches. Although there are many high-quality, persuasive related researches studying westerners, the researches of East Asians (especially Chinese) are still insufficient. Because of cultural and ethnic differences, the conclusion of westerners cannot fully explain the Chinese health problems. Even though many Chinese scholars are also studying the Chinese ways of life and chronic diseases, a lot of methods are not standardized. These studies, often made by clinicians, are mainly case-control study which lack of high quality cohort study and RCT study. The good news is that in present China, awareness of disease has been gradually raised from the traditional biomedical model to biopsychosocial model, and people put forward higher requirements for their health - not only pain-free, but positive physical and psychological state; Not only disease cure, but disease prevention. This trend gives public health research, especially epidemiology, more attention and wider range of practical significance. It convinced me that I will have a good career prospect after graduation, and there will be plenty of opportunities to achieve my dream. I would like to systematically study the epidemiological research met
