These days, many home users never bother to download their e-mail and the only threat W eb mail sites face comes from other sites. In its favor, Web mail offers a simple setup; You need to know only a user name and a password, without any mysterious mail-server addresses. Once your account is active, you can use it from any Web-connected computer. Web-based mail systems also make it easy to keep a permanent address regardless of your Internet provider. Doing the same with desktop e-mail usually requires paying extra money for a domain name and spending extra time on mail settings. By contrast, desktop mail programs let you read and compose mail without an Internet connection and dont wrap advertisements around your mail. But their most important advantages is their separation of software and service. Because you can use more than one program with one mail service, you can choose an application with the features you like. And because you can also use one mail program with more than one mail service, desktop applications make your mail itself portable; you can back up your messages and take them with you after closing an account. If desktop mail software programmers had kept pace with Web mail developers, the two camps could have a fairly even fight. Unfortunately, mail software developers cant make Internet providers upgrade their mail services, and Internet providers cant make mail-software developers modify their efforts. Unless that situation somehow changes, Web mail will continue to face few challenges outside of the social networks.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. Which is a disadvantage of e-mail applications?27. Which is most likely the biggest competitor of web mail?28. The 26-year-old postgraduate has always wanted to work in public service. But public service doesnt pay much, and her twenty-year program at Columbia that costs about $50 000 a year with living expenses. She has a scholarship from Columbia that covers just $4 000 a year and has taken out loans to pay for the rest. She worries that she will spend years paying back her student loans and not have money left over for her retirement. The good news is that in 2007, Congress recognized that there were so many students in Wheelers position that it passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Reduction and Access Act. There were two programs established by this act that Wheeler should look into. The first is the income-based repayment plan, which allows lower-income graduate with a lot of debt to reduce their monthly payments. Depending on a graduates income and level of debt, the program could limit his or her annual educational loan debt repayment to 15% of the income. The second is the public service loan forgiveness plan. If a borrower is working full time in public-service jobs and making 10-year loan payments, the federal government will forgive the remaining debt. In Wheelers case, she could end up with about $75 000 of her debt forgiven.Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.29. Niet sent a letter to Moscow was confirmed that they now own the original, while Niet has always believed that the painting is in the Vietnams national art museum. How many paintings and sculptures in Vietnams art museum are actually copies? Nobody knows. During the Vietnam War, the museum itself was a virtual copy factory.“The Americans said they were going to bomb Vietnam back to the stone age,”says chairman of the Hanoi Fine Arts Association. So the staff, and in some cases, the artists themselves started to make copies. The reproductions stayed in Hanoi while the originals were sent away and hidden in caves. The artworks were supposed to return home after the war. Not all did. Records, if they ever existed, were lost. Making matters worse, in the 1980s, the government-funded museum set up a department to make high-quality reproductions to sell. It is hurting Vietnams once hot market. The artists are increasingly urging that the museum sort originals from copies. They also want the museum to produce the records of paintings and remove pieces that are reproductions. Luong Xuan Doan, deputy director of the Culture and Art Department at the Communist Partys Commission for Education and Communications, says it is time to set up a panel of experts and once and for all, identify which works are copies and which are originals.Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.32.
