The streets were silent and the night was cool. Id gotten my sister on her way to Ft. Knox after a weekend visit. At this time, I wanted nothing more than to go back to the dorm and get some rest. I never thought that a trip to the bus station could be so dramatic, that I would face death because of others prejudice. Later on, I would need to overcome the effects of that prejudice. After giving my sister spending money, I couldnt afford to take a cab back to the dorm. So I decided to get little exercise and run to the dorm, about four miles away. When I had gone about two bocks, I noticed a truck slowly following me. When I turned around to see who it was, the driver sped up, went to the next block, and turned right. After Id run another couple blocks, I noticed the truck in front of me. A guy on the passenger side started yelling at me, “Hey, nigger.” However, I continued running, pretending to ignore them. Three blocks further on, they appeared again. This time, the driver had three other guys sitting in the back of the truck. “Nigger, were going to kill you,” they yelled as they threw cans and bottles at me. Trying not to show fear, I continued my uphill journey to Western Kentucky University. By this time, I feared for my life and started praying silently to God. I knew that each step would bring me closer to a safe haven. When the guys in the pickup turned left, I passed them by, and I didnt see or hear from them for three more blocks. However, as approached the corner of the fourth block, they surprised me. Five white guys jumped from the corner and surrounded me. One guy wearing a University of Louisville baseball cap said to me, “Wherere you going, Nigger?” and pushed me into a guy behind me. Then the guy wearing the U of L hat hit me in the stomach. As I folded over, another guy kicked me in the side. Immediately after that blow, another kicked me hard in the rear, and then blows came from everywhere. As I fell to the sidewalk, I felt a stick break on my back. There were more kicks to my face and ribs and then, I felt nothing. When I awakened, my mother was sitting beside my bed. When she saw me move my head, she simply said, “Thank God.” It took me three weeks to get out of the hospital, and seven more to recover from four broken ribs, a broken collarbone and arm, fractured skull, and severely beaten face. Physically, I did recover. As people came to see me, I felt the tension between the blacks and the whites. Coincidentally, the police reported that I was “assaulted by five unknown assailants” and left it at that. They failed to investigate either the vehicle or the license plate number that a witness reported. When I got better, I purchased a handgun and walked the street every night for at least a month. I didnt speak to, eat with, or associate with white people in any form or fashion. One night, as I was walking away from the bus stop, I saw the pickup. As I waited for the driver to come out of the convenience store, the anger and hatred rose within me. All the malice Ive felt transferred to the index finger of my right hand on the trigger of my handgun. When the guy came out of the store, I grabbed him from behind and pushed the gun in his side. I dragged him behind the building and put the gun to his throat. “Do you remember me?” I asked. “Uh yeah.” he answered. “Before I blow your brains out, I want to know why you all did that to me that night.” When this man started to cry and plead for his life, I felt immensely powerful. However, he said, “I really am sorry and I came to see you in the hospital. Im the one who sent the card. Dont hate the whole white race for the mistakes of the few I wrote that.” I remember the card. As I looked at that man again, I saw the pain he had been carrying for four months. As I let up the trigger, I looked at him again and said, “I forgive you,” and walked away. Then I took the bullets out of the gun and threw them to the ground. As I walk up the hill to Western Kentucky University, each step gave me a new freedom. When I got to the top of the hill, I was a brand new man. I was not only free of malice and prejudice; I had become a man who could forgive the prejudice of others. I had decided that night to walk in a new power: the power of forgiveness. Statements: (1). Innocent times spent sharing documents and executable files without a care in the world. Okay, every month or so you might encounter a boot sector virus but they were easy to deal with even if the anti-virus software didnt pick them up. But those long lazy summers disappeared too fast. Macro viruses made Information Technology (IT) administrators grow up fast as they realized there was a type of virus which could spread very quickly throughout an organization. It wasnt unusual to find hundreds of computers within personal company infected by viruses transmitted via email attachments. The IT staff were amongst the fittest departments in your company, running from Personal Computer (PC) to the next cleaning them up. There had to be a better way. Companies now realize that viruses arent urban myths, and can have a serious impact on their operations. They invest in anti-virus software on the desktops, servers and email gateways and even put in place procedures to ensure their anti-virus is up-to-date with the very latest detection routines. It sounds like companies have put in place adequate defenses to protect against viruses. But have they? Anti-virus software detects most of the viruses your users are likely to encounter often without the user even knowing. However, the software must be updated regularly, preferably daily in any large company. Even then, a very new virus can infect your users. With the rapid transmission of files through networks and the Internet, a virus can spread a considerable distance before it can be identified and protected against. Fortunately, only a few viruses ever do this but the likes of Melissa and the Love Bug can inflict serious damage before their progress is stopped. Whilst employees become suddenly aware during the ensuing media excitement, they soon forget about the virus threat as the stories disappear from the news headlines. This is the danger. Complacency can set in when there is no perceived action on the virus front with no global crisis, and the importance of being vigilant about viruses recedes in your users minds. They forget what the big deal was in the first place after all,anti-virus software deals with the viruses, doesnt it? And isnt it the IT departments job to look after this sort of thing? Before you know it your users are opening unsolicited attachments once more, downloading unauthorized software, and putting your companys data and credibility at risk. All because the users think that they are working in a safe environment. Employees see anti-virus software, firewalls and IT departments as guarantees that their computers will work and be safe. Of course, there arent any guarantees. Anti-virus software plays one, albeit important, part in the defense of your company from malicious attack but the security of your computer system is only as strong as the weakest link. And that, more often than not, is the human factor. No employer wants to come across as a killjoy or an ogre. Most will willingly accept that the happiest employees are those who feel that they are respected and trusted by their employer. Many companies accept that employees will send and receive a certain amount of personal email and make the odd personal telephone call. However, the worry comes when employees start risking company security in pursuit of personal amusement. Funny screensavers and games downloaded from the Internet can seem harmless enough but they could easily be harboring a dangerous virus. Software downloaded from the net is often unlicensed and unsupported, and may cause conflicts with existing software in use at your company. Unlicensed, pirated software is an ideal vector for a computer virus. Virus writers and hackers often use such software as the ideal kick-start for their virus distribution. It is vitally important that employees be educated about the virus threat but this cannot be a one-off event. The potential threat should always be in the back of an employees mind and precautionary measures should be taken as a matter of course. There is no harm in reminding people about what could happen if they let their guard down. In the end, education is the key to a virus-free environment and this is a continual process. It may not be the most exciting thing on the agenda but it works. The lesson is simple. You can have the best software in the world protecting your companys defenses; you can even be the biggest IT company in the world; but without your users practicing safe computing they will always be the weakest link. (1). Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage? (3pts) A) Employees welcome the free software available on the Internet and they download a lot of it. B) Employees should be constantly warned about virus threats to ensure the normal functioning of the companys computer system. C) Employees like to take advantage of the facilities in their companies to handle their personal matters. (3pts) A) the time when people were not too much bothered by computer viruses B) the time when people used free documents and executable files C) the time when people could take a long nap after lunch D) the time when people frequently encountered different boot sector viruses(3). It can be concluded that _. (3pts) A) computer virus threats have never been given enough attention B) computer viruses can be avoided for good with good anti-virus software C) computer virus threats have always been in the mind of computer users D) computer viruses can never be avoided even when IT staff regularly update software(4). Employers are likely to do all of the following except that _. (3pts) A) they criticize their employees for what they dont do well B) they allow their employees to make some personal telephone calls C) they do what they can to make their employees feel respected and trusted D) they allow their employees to send and receive some personal email(5). The track is only 100 meters (328 feet) long. The eager audience is standing by towatch every single stride. Will a new record be set? Will any of the runners stumble? Whowill come in first? The questions may be typical, but this race is a bit unusual. It is held oncea year in February in Cape Town, South Africa. The difference with this race is that there areonly a few runners at the starting line. They are not dressed in t-shirts, shorts and sneakers.Instead, they are covered in black spots and run on their furry paws. This event is called the Cheetah Challenge Race. Each year, people come to watchseveral swift cheetahs race. Which cheetah will be the fastest this year? So far, the fastestcheetah on record is named Nyana-Spier. This extremely fast animal managed to cover theentire 100 meters in approximately six seconds. This set a new worlds record. So far, nocheetah has been able to beat that impressive speed although they keep trying. Each year, the Cheetah Challenge Race becomes more popular. It is promoted as anexciting event. Parents, children, and school groups come from all over the area to watchand cheer on the runners. The competition begins with people trying to break a few recordsthemselves or perhaps running just to have a good time. More than one thousand runners ofall ages and abilities take part in a 5k (3 miles) walk and a 10k (6 miles) run. The top runnersin each division get a reward. Everyone who participates in either race takes home a medal.Just as many people come to watch the cheetah portion of the race as come to exercise. While there, they also see a variety of other animals, including lizards, penguins, andbutterflies. Each collection represents members of an endangered species like the cheetah. The primary reason that the event is held each year is to raise awareness of animals indanger. Each runner pays an entry fee and a portion of that fee is given to projects that workto protect these species. There are only a few thousand cheetahs left in the entire world. They are one of thefastest animals on the planet. They can run as fast as it is legal to drive on some highways.Their speed and grace are the main reasons they are so much fun to watch in this annualrace. With the funds raised through this event, cheetahs may thrive for years to come.(1)In paragraph 3, the word popular, as well as words like population and popularity, comes from the Latin word for(2pts)A people.B beloved.C position.D crowded.(2)Which states the purpose of the Cheetah Challenge Race?(3pts)A The race becomes more and more popular each year.B Each year, people come to watch several swift cheetahs race.C With the funds raised through this event, cheetahs may thrive for years and years to come.D Their speed and grace are the main reasons they are so much fun to watch in the annual race.(3)Which source would provide the most recent information about the Cheetah Challenge Race?(4pts)A a map of Cape Town, South AfricaB a magazine article: “An Update on the Cheetah Challenge Race”C a book about the historical customs of Cape Town, South AfricaD a brochure: “The Fastest Cheetah Ever in the Cheetah Challenge Race”12.reading and responding(25pts)A True Friend“Youre going to do WHAT?” I asked my best friend, Julie, in alarm.“Im going to try out for the cheerleading squad,” she said, eyes fixed on the ground, notmeeting my shocked gaze. We had been best friends since second grade and we dideverything together. We had made many plans about what we would do this year, but nowshe was going off on her own. I was sure that if she joined the cheerleading squad, shewould become best friends with someone else, and I couldnt stand the thought.“Why are you doing this? Do you really want to hang around with those girls instead ofme?” I lashed out, my voice filled with anger.“Its not about the girls,” Julie said in defense. “Its about the sport. I want to be on thesquad at the high school level because they win scholarships at state competitions, and Ihave a better chance if Im on the squad here,” she explained. “Besides,” she added, “its notlike Im leaving the country or something.” “Bon voyage,” I scowled and marched off, leaving Julie standing with a sad look on herface. I had no doubts she would make itJulie was a superb gymnast who could dobackflips across the entire gym wi
