attitude.introductionthe unhappy majorityas you look around at your fellow human beings, you will find it hard to ignore the fact thatvery few people are happy, fulfilled and leading purposeful lives. most of them seem unableo cope with their problems and the circumstances of daily living. the majority, settling for theaverage, have resigned themselves to “just getting by.”resignation to mediocrity has become a way of life. as a result, feelings of inadequacy cause them, quitehumanly, to blame society, people, circumstances, andsurrounding conditions for their failures anddisappointments. the idea that people and thingscontrol their lives is so thoroughly ingrained intheir thinking that they normally will not respond tological arguments that prove otherwise.william james, the eminent philosopher andpsychologist, once observed that, “the greatestdiscovery of our age has been that we, by changingthe inner aspects of our thinking, can change theouter aspects of our lives.” wrapped up in this briefstatement is the dynamic truth that we are notvictims, but co-creators in the building of our livesand the world around us. or, as another sage puts it,“we arent what we think we are, but what we think,we are!”the sheep state of minda lesson that has taken us far too long to learn isthat the opposite of bravery is not cowardliness, butconformity. you may have spent valuable, irreplaceable years trying to fit into the paradeonly to learn, too late, that you will never fit it.what makes us follow each other like sheep? it isbecause we are trying to conform to the majority.its time to break out of this sheep state of mindand stop punishing ourselves because we are differentfrom our family, friends or anyone else for thatmatter. much of our suffering can be eliminated if werefuse to let our life be marred by conformity.to think that our life is controlled in any way byanother individual, group, or society imposes acondition of mental slavery which makes us a prisonerby our own decree.our thoughts become the blueprint, which attract fromour subconscious mind all the elements that go intofulfilling our concepts, whether they are positive ornegative. what we have in our life right now is theoutward manifestation of what has been going on inour mind. we have literally attracted everything thathas come into our life, good or bad, happy or sad, success or failure. this includes all facets of ourexperience including business, marriage, health orpersonal affairs.think about it! your surroundings, your environment, your world all outwardly picture what you think aboutinwardly. by discovering why you are the way youare, you also find the key to being what you want tobe.the power to changeshakespeare said, “ we know what we are, but not whatwe may be.”does this describe you? do you concentrate on yourlimitations, your failures, your blundering way ofdoing things, seldom stopping to think of what youmight be? the problem is that you have beenconditioned since childhood by false concepts, valuesand beliefs that have prevented you from realizinghow truly capable and unique you are.by virtue of your role as co-creator of your life, you have the power to change any of its aspects.every great teacher has come to the same conclusion:you cannot look to someone outside yourself to solveyour problems. as the master teacher reminded us sooften, “the kingdom of heaven is within.” it is notin some distant land, and it is not up in the sky.buddha came to the same realization when he said, “bea lamp unto your own feet and do not seek outsideyourself.” self-healing powers are within. health, happiness, abundance and peace of mind are naturalstates of being once you break the bonds of negativethinking.unless you perceive your own true worth as a person, you cannot come close to achieving total selfconfidence. only to the degree that you can truly acknowledge your own unique importance will you be able to free yourself from self-imposed limitations.yes, i said self-imposed! our parents, our family, our boss or society didnt do it to us. we do it toourselves by allowing others to control our life.unless you get rid of your guilt feelings and ceasebelittling yourself for your imagined inadequacies, you will be one of those who continue the fruitlessstruggle to attain total self-confidence and personalfreedom. in order to be truly free, compassionate, warm and loving, you must first begin byunderstanding and loving yourself. you have been toldto, “love thy neighbor as thyself,” but until youhave a full appreciation of who and what you are, itdefrauds both you and your neighbor!fulfilling your needs firstone of the principal requisites for change and aself-confident personality is to satisfy your ownneeds first. on the surface this may appear selfish, but lets remind ourselves that only when we havedone our best to make the most of ourselves can we beof greatest service to our families, friends, coworkers, communities, etc.many people use the philosophy of service to othersfirst as an escape from taking responsibility forchanging their own lives. they say that their husbandor wife must come first; their boyfriend orgirlfriend; their church, family or the world mustcome first. this is nothing but self-deception. anexample of this kind of behavior is the person whoburies himself sacrificially in a commendable projectwith missionary zeal when, in truth, he cant faceand eliminate his own problems.you cant change the world, but you can changeyourself. the only way the human situation willimprove is for each individual to take charge of hisor her life. the time has come for you to stopeverything else and give total priority to your needsfirst. this is the only way you will ever be free.physical slavery is a punishable crime but, farworse, is mental slavery for the punishment is, asdescartes put it so well, “a life of quietdesperation.”come aboard! its take-off time!you are about to start on an adventure that willreward you for the rest of your life. you are goingto learn new ways to break the bonds of limitationthat have been holding you back.if you find yourself in a situation where you seem tobe going nowhere, feel inadequate and unable to facelife with enthusiasm and confidence, this book is foryou. if you are disgusted with mediocrity, disappointed by past results and not content to justdrift through life, these pages offer you analternative. if you will allow yourself to be openand receptive to new concepts, values and beliefs, you will discover why you should and how you cansystematically reorganize your thought processes toawaken the new you.once you master these principles, you will have morehappiness, more love, more freedom, more money andmore self-confidence than you ever thought possible.nothing is more rewarding in life than releasing yourunlimited potential and leading a creative, purposeful life. it makes no difference who you are, what you do or what your life situation is, you canachieve total self-confidence. and the approach isnot nearly as difficult as you might think!21 days can make a differncelets slip backstage for a moment and steal a glimpseat a simple but very effective learning technique.its called the 21-day habit.it has been determined that it takes approximatelytwenty-one days to break an old, destructive habit orform a new, positive habit. it will take you at leastthat long too fully absorb the material in this book.make no mistake. you will understand it immediately, but intellectual understanding alone is not enough tomake the necessary changes. the real thrill comeswhen, at last, you know it.you must go from initial understanding to knowing. inorder to know something, it must become apart of yourthinking, feeling, actions and reactions. and thistakes time. so dont make the mistake of just readingthe book once and saying, “i know it!” you wont“know it” until it has been absorbed into yourconsciousness and becomes a new habit pattern.put everything aside for awhile and apply your fullconcentration to what you are reading. the hoursspent in changing your negative, self-defeating habitpatterns to positive, constructive ones will be asmall investment compared to the rewards of alifetime of accomplishment and freedom.if at times i speak forcefully it is to cut throughthe heavy layers of mental resistance and reach aplace within you where you already “know”. wheretruth is recognized and heard. when this happens, there will be a feeling of heightened aliveness assomething within you says, “yes, i do know this istrue.”to obtain the best results, read this book throughonce and familiarize yourself with the entire scopeof the material. then return to the specificchapters that are most meaningful to you. let theprinciples sink deeply into your consciousness and, most importantly, act upon them without delay.now, if you are ready, lets get going!secret #1dehypnotizing yourselfevery person has been hypnotized to some degreeeither by ideas he has accepted from others or ideashe has convinced himself are true. these ideas haveexactly the same effect upon his behavior as thoseimplanted into the mind of a hypnotic subject by ahypnotist.over the years i have hypnotized hundreds of peopleto demonstrate the power of suggestion andimagination. to best illustrate my point, let meexplain what happens when a person is hypnotized.under hypnosis, i tell a normal, healthy woman thatshe cannot lift a pencil that i have placed on atable. and, surprisingly, she finds herself unable toperform this simple act. it is not a question of hernot trying to lift the pencil. she will struggle andstrain, much to the audiences amusement, but shesimply cannot lift the pencil. on the one hand, sheis trying to perform the action through voluntaryeffort and the use of her body muscles. but on theother, the suggestion that “you cannot lift thepencil” causes her mind to believe that it isimpossible. here we find a physical force beingneutralized by a mental force. it is a case of willpower versus imagination. when this happens, imagination always wins out!many people think they can change their lives throughsheer will power. this is not true. negative ideas inthe imagination cause such persons to defeatthemselves. regardless of how hard they try, its nouse. they have accepted a false belief as if it werefact. all their ability, good intentions, effort andwill power are of no avail against the powerful falsebelief they have accepted as truth.in the same manner, i quickly prove that there is nolimit to what a person can or cannot do when he orshe is hypnotized because the power of imaginationsis limitless. to observers, i appear to have magicalpower to make her able and willing to do things shecould not or would not ordinarily do. the truth is,of course, that the power is inherent in the subject.without realizing it, my subject hypnotized herselfinto believing that she could or could not do thesethings. no one can be involuntarily hypnotized aseach person collaborates in the hypnotizing process.the hypnotist is only a guide who helps the subjectaccelerate the phenomenon.i have introduced this simple demonstration ofhypnosis to illustrate a psychological principle, which can be of great value to you. this sameprinciple is becoming increasingly evident in themodern educational process where the student ineffect, actually educates himself with the skilledassistance of the teacher. and, even moredramatically, in the healing arts where the patientheals his own body under the professional guidance ofa qualified healing arts practitioner.once a person believes that something is true,(whether it is true or not) he then acts as if itwere. he will instinctively seek to collect facts tosupport the belief no matter how false they may be.no one will be able to convince him otherwise unless, through personal experience or study, he is ready tochange. hence, it is easy to see that, if one acceptssomething that is not true, all subsequent actionsand reactions will be based upon a false belief.this is not a new idea. since the beginning of time, both men and women have been in a kind of hypnoticsleep of which they were unaware, but which has beenrecognized by great teachers and thinkers throughoutthe centuries. these people have perceived thathumankind limits itself through its “mistakencertainties” and have sought to awaken us to ourpotential for greatness which goes far beyondanything we can possibly imagine.it is; therefore, of utmost importance that you donot assume you are awake to the truth about yourself.said another way, you must not assume that what younow hold as truth is, in fact, really the truth.instead, you must proceed with the idea that you arepresently hypnotized by false beliefs, concepts andvalues that are keeping you from expressing your truepotential.it may be astutely observed at this point that youand i are primarily the result of what we have beentold and taught, and what we have been sold andbought.the average person never comes near reaching hisunlimited potential because he is living under thefalse assumption that he already knows the truth. hebelieves what his parents have told him, what histeachers have taught him, what he has read, and whathis religion has told him without actually proving it for himself.millions upon millions of people have blindlyfollowed the rhetoric of so-called “knowledgeable”people without making sure that the principles these“experts” expound stand up to the realities of life.they further limit themselves by holding onto theseconcepts, values and beliefs even after they haveactually evolved beyond them. fortunately, somethingor someone has triggered your interest in movingbeyond your present level of awareness, whichincludes the discovery, and development of totalself-confidence.your first job is to awaken from the hypnoticcondition that is presently keeping you from beingthe person you want to be. read the followingstatement:the degree to which you awaken will be in directproportion to the amount of truth you can acceptabout yourself.now read it again! this is the key that determineshow much you will be able to change your life. in thewords, “know the truth and the truth shall set youfree.”many of the concepts presented in this book will bein direct opposition to what you now hold as thetruth. some may even seem “way out” or illogical andwill challenge your belief system. you will have achoice to either find out if they are true, or resistthem. the choice is yours. this brings us back towhat we said earlier: your life will be transformedin direct relation to the amount of truth you canaccept about yourself.if you are sincere about changing your life andincreasing your self-confidence, you must have anopen mind. i neither want nor expect you to accept astrue anything you read in this book, just because isay its true. if you do, you will gain little fromwhat you are reading. you must try out the principlesfor yourself. the inner conviction and security, which comes from having proved to your ownsatisfaction that what is presented as the truth isindeed really the truth, is the foundation upon whichto begin building a dynamic self-confidentpersonality.in order to construct a new “functional” building ona site where a “nonfunctional” building exists, youfirst have to raze the old structure. this must bedone by shattering those “mistaken certainties” whichhave held you back from expressing the unlimited, abundant, wholesome life you desire. this isprimarily what this book is about.how your beliefs imprison youj
