movements that depend on a persons attitude or feelings.Body language includes the way people walk, how they stand, and their facial features. In other words, any kind of meaning is shown by a persons attitude or body movements. For example, when a boy is sad he may drop his head and walk slowly.Or,if a girl is happy, she might run and jump or stand up straight and put her hands in the air.People dont have to say anything to show how they feel about things. The colour of peoples skin may even show how they feel. For example,if people with light coloured skin get embarrassed, their skin may turn red,or if they are worried, they might get pale.Body language can be voluntary(主动的) or involuntary(无意识的)An interesting fact is that blind children will smile when happy even though they have never seen a smile. The next main type of nonverbal communication is gestures.Gestures are communications like facial expressions, hand signals, eye gazing, and body postures.Examples include smiles, handshakes, waving, and raising certain fingers to say something. For instance,if you saw a friend at a noisy carnival, you might smile and wave at your friend. You might also point at the Ferris wheel if you wanted to meet your friend there. You could do all of these things without saying a word.Another great example is in baseball when the catcher signals to the pitcher the kind of pitch to use for the batter that is up.56If a boy passes the final exam he _.Amight not raise his head Bmight walk home slowlyCmight run home singing Dmight not stand there straight57When someone gets pale he is most likely to be _.Aanxious BsurprisedCembarrassed Ddisappointed58Which one of the following is WRONG according to this passage?ABody language is mainly expressed by ones body movements.BThe blind children can also smile when they are glad.CYou can also express yourself without saying a word in baseball.DGestures can be shown only by ones hands.59All the following are gestures except _.Ahand signals Bcoloured skin Chand wave Deye gazingBMany years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.I took_off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friends. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thankyou note for helping me.Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon,I returned to my car and found that Id left the lights on all day,and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealershipa shop selling carswas right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment,so when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.“Thank you”two powerful words.Theyre easy to say and mean so much.60The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City _.Ato visit a friend Bto see his parentsCto pay at the cash register Dto have more gas for his car61The underlined phrase “took off” in Paragraph 2 means “_”Aturned off Bmoved off Cput up Dset up62What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car?AHe had it pulled back to the gas station.BThe couple sent him a business card.CThe couple offered to help him.DHe called his friend for help.63The battery of the authors car was dead because _.Asomething went wrong with the lightsBthe meeting lasted a whole dayChe forgot to turn off the lightsDhe drove too long a distanceCHow should one invest a sum of money in these days of inflation(通货膨胀)?Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate.Only a brave man,or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market.Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques.I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life.“The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands.Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round peoples wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves.”Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time.Certain men were very clever at measuring the time of day according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout the time.So it seems that the first clocks were human beings. However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hourglasses, and invented waterclocks.Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces,stately_homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all,if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in an antique clock and perhaps make a future profit?64According to the passage, collecting antique clocks _.Acan hardly keep the value of your savingsBwill cost much of your savingsCmay increase your wealthDneeds your bravery65By quoting(引用) the remark of a being from another planet, the author intends to _.Asuggest human beings are controlled by a clockBdescribe why clocks can rule the planet EarthCtell readers what clocks look likeDcompare clocks to human beings66Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to measure the time?ACounting the beathing of ones own heart.BMaking use of candles, sand and water.CObserving shadows cast by the sun.DKeeping slaves busy day and night.67The underlined phrase “stately homes” in Paragraph 4 means “_”Astateowned housesBhouses in very good conditionCgrand houses open to the publicDhouses where statesmen meet regularlyDDo you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodnessand selfrespect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honour” helps you create this life of good feelings.Heres an example to show how honourable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item.If we keep silent, and profit from the clerks mistake,we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement.Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand,if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honour that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we dont tell the clerk,a couple of things would happen.Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process,we would lose some peace of mind and selfrespect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted since we advertise our dishonour by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast,bringing_the_error_to_the_clerks_attention causes different things to happen.Immediately the clerk knows us to be honourable.Upon leaving the store,we feel honourable and our selfrespect is increased.Whenever we take honourable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honourable actions.Honourable thoughts lead to honourable actions.Honourable actions lead us to a happier existence. And its easy to think and act honourably again when were happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once its started, its easy to continue.Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.68According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our _.Aselfrespect Bfinancial rewardsCadvertising ability Dfriendly relationship69The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to _.Alying Bstealing Ccheating Dadvertising70The underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerks attention” in Para. 5 means “_”Atelling the truth to the clerkBoffering advice to the clerkCasking the clerk to be more attentiveDreminding the clerk of the charged item探究案根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago._71_The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses. _72_So they are called “disease of civilization”. Many cancers and disease of blood systems are examples of such diseases.Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none._73_However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products and they made very little use of grains. _74_We eat six times more salt than our ancestors(祖先)We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C._75_ But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way as our ancestors did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.A. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.B. People today probably do not want to live the way people thousands of years ago did.C. Ancient people also lived in large groups.D. But today, we eat a lot of these.E. Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise.F. In that case, they would live much healthier.G. People today probably liv
