Unit 11 The Olympic GamesSection A The Olympic RingsDirections: Listen to a talk about the Olympics Rings and choose the best answer to each question you hear at the end of the talk. The Olympic flag features the emblem of the Olympic Games. It reinforces the idea that the Olympic Movement is international and welcomes all countries of the world to join. At the end of each Olympic Games, the mayor of that host city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host city. It then rests at the town hall of the next host city for four years until the Opening Ceremony of their Olympic Games. The Olympic Rings on the flag were created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games in 1913- It was first displayed on the Olympic Flag at the 7th Olympiad in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. The five interlocking rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. It is important to emphasize that Pierre de Coubertin never said nor wrote that the colors of the rings were linked with the different continents.Today the Olympic Rings logo is one of the most popular logos in the world. The results of a recent survey carried out in Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Great Britain and the USA showed that 92% of those questioned correctly identified the Olympic rings, which made them the most-recognized symbol. They were followed by the McDonalds and Shell emblems (88%), Mercedes (74%) and the United Nations (36%).Question 1: What will happen to the Olympic Flag at the end of each Olympic Games?Question 2: When did the Olympic Rings make its first appearance in public? Question 3: What are the five colors of the Rings reading from left to right?Section B Sports SignsDirections: First take one minute to look at the following sports signs used at Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. They all answer the question What do you think of this logo? Listen and draw a line to match the person with his or her opinion about the logo.Narrator: What do you think of this logo?Person 1Well. To me, it is a little bit disappointing. It is natural for any design possiblepeople need some time to get used to a new design.Person 2The logo seems not so unexpected. The background color they chose, I think, is in the common sense. Cuz, in my view, red is best symbol color of China. In ancient China and even today, when people are in the joyous occasion, they like to express their mood by using red decorations, such as couplets, lanterns, candles and even the cover of a bridePerson 3 I am glad that the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee did not pick some cutesy animal or mascot (like a Panda) for the 2008 Games. Yes, the Olympic Games are supposed to be fun but its also a serious sporting event, not a carnival. Well, it is certainly better than I expected.Person 4At first glance, the logo looks like a simply-drawn running man but a closer look reveals its hidden calligraphy (it sort of looks like the Jing or city character written in Chinese). Plus its shape (like a stone) has an ancient quality to it. Overall, a nice logo in my humble opinion.Person 5Yes, I like it very much. I also think that it looks like a personal stamp that Chinese artists use to imprint on their paintings. As others have stated, it combines several things into one simple yet complex symbol. Its simple enough that a child can easily draw this, whether he or she knows Chinese characters or not.Part III Listening Comprehension TestDirections: In this section, you will hear two short passages. At the end of each passage, there will be some questions. Both the passages and the questions will be read to you only once. After each question, there will be a pause. During the pause, choose the best answer from the four choices given.Passage OnePeople usually think that sport builds character and that participating in organized sport, young people are exposed to good influences, rather than bad influences. But things sometimes turn out to be different. Some New Zealand researchers reported recently that playing sports does not stop lively boys and girls from becoming juvenile delinquents.Dr. Dorothy Begg and her colleagues at the University of Otago Medical School in Dunedin made a survey on sports and delinquency. They questioned 1,000 boys and girls aged 15 to 18, asking them what kinds of sports they played and what delinquent activities they engaged in.The study showed that delinquency was defined by 29 different acts, including car theft, burglary and shoplifting and sports included just about everything from aerobics to windsurfing. The researchers found that boys who did a lot of sports by the age of 15 were twice as likely to be delinquent by 18 as boys who were not athletic in their early teens. Athletic girls were nearly three times as likely to misbehave.Question 1; What is the main idea of the passage?Question 2: Who are the subjects of Dr. Dorothy Beggs study?Question 3: What fact did Dr. Dorothy Begg and her colleagues find?Passage TwoBilly Payne, an Atlanta lawyer, has been thought to be the driving force behind Atlantas bid to stage the 1996 Olympic Games- He is the Chief Executive Officer of Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. Payne approached Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young in February 1987, to seek support for his campaign, which was then considered to be an impossible dream. It seemed unlikely that the International Olympic Committee would vote in favor of Atlanta, for it was only three years earlier the United States had staged the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.Payne was a dynamo in pursuit of his goal, however. He left his law partnership, took out a personal loan, and for three and a half years worked 18 hours per dayunpaidbeginning at 4 a.m. and traveling locally and ternationally phoning, persuading and talking, sometimes by tricks, to myone and everyone about the vision he had. Eventually, in September 1990, the international Olympic Committee voted 51 to 35 to give Atlanta the |)lympic Games over Athens.Question 4: Whom did Payne call on to seek support for his goal?Question 5: Why was it considered unlikely in 1987 that Atlanta would get thebid to stage 1996 Games?Question 6: According to the speaker, what personality does Billy Payne have? Question 7; How many International Olympic Committee members gave their votes to Atlanta for 1996 Olympic Games?Unit 12 ShoppingSection A Finding What You WantDirections: You are going to hear two visitors making contact while shopping. Complete the sentences and answer the questions below. You will hear each talk twice. At the end of each talk there will be a 3-minute pause, during which time you are asked to write down your answers briefly. You now have 25 seconds to read the questions or sentences below.Talk OneBuy Nothing Day has been organized by a loose union of international groups. It is held a day after Americas Thanksgiving and the unofficial start of the Christmas gift-buying rush. Usually, it is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The concept is a 24-hour stop on consumer spending. Its a very personal promise to go on a consumer fast for one day to find out what its like to control the impulse to buy. The organizers of Buy Nothing Day hope that more than 100,000 people in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Britain, South Africa, Japan, Sweden and Belgium will fight off the urge to buy.Started by a Canadian group five years ago, the day aims to draw attention to over-consumption and its environmental and social consequences. Organizers hope to awaken shoppers to the Joys of buying less and living more simply with less environmental damage, less stress, more happiness and personal fulfillment. They dont seriously expect to make a dent in retailers sales that day. Nor are they trying to convince people to quit shopping altogether. Rather, they hope to spark awareness and debate. People are so focused on material things as a source of fulfillment that they have lost touch with the fact that nonmaterial things are the true source of happiness.Talk TwoEach year
