2009年全国“高教杯”中职英语说课比赛参赛作品“ Basic English” Book One-Unit 1 “Name Card Design” 说课稿Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Its a great pleasure to be here. Im Liujiezhen, from GZ vocational school of real estate management. This is my name card. It is not an ordinary name card. It is the students design work in this class. Hopefully you will enjoy my demo teaching “Name card design”. I will present my lesson from the following 6 parts: analysis of student, analysis of teaching material, teaching objectives, teaching strategies and methods, teaching procedures and reflection. Now lets start with the analysis of students. -(Part One)This is a class of students major in Interior Decoration. My analysis focus on two aspects: the link between the students major and the topic “name card design”, as well as the students prior knowledge on this topic. According to an investigation carried out by our school, for Interior Decoration majors, English name card design is a kind of basic skill at their workplace, as they need to design English name cards for themselves or clients in their future job. Therefore, it might generate their interests in learning English, if I link these needs with this topic. As name card is not something fresh for the students, its necessary to know their prior knowledge on this topic. I designed a performance-based pre-test to assess how much they can do to construct an English name card. This is the result of the pre-test, although some students have the rough idea of name card, we can see, most of them have difficulties in constructing an English name card, with only 12% get A-level, 15% B-level and 73% C-level. Therefore, the students are distributed to A.B.C level accordingly. What about the Teaching Material?-(Part Two)In Unit1, “Nice to Meet you”, “Basic English”, Book One, the students are expected to know how to greet others properly and how to design a name card. Name card design is a key practical lesson concluding the unit. In the last lesson, the students learned how to greet others and how to get personal information from others. In this lesson, Ill focus on expressions in the six essential points of a name card and name card design. The key points are words and expressions for the essential elements, such as name of the company, the address, e-mail address etc. And the difficulties are expected in translating companys name and address into English. Even more difficult is to put a name card into a suitable style to meet the clients need.Based on the analysis of students and teaching material, my teaching objectives are as follows: knowledge and skills, learning strategy, and emotion. -(Part Three)For knowledge and skills: the students should be able to remember the six essential parts of a name card, and know how to express them in English. And the students writing skills should be improved at the same time. For learning strategy: firstly, the students can adopt the Initial Letter Association Learning Method. That is to use the initial letter of each name card item to memorize the name card structure. Secondly, writing with the framework. That means the students should be able to write different name cards by replacing personal information. For emotion: in groupwork or pair work, the students are able to improve their communication skills and cooperate with the team. It sounds the teaching objectives are big burdens on the shoulders of our students, but dont worry. Look at my teaching strategy and methods.-(Part Four)-I follow Stratified Teaching as my teaching strategy , and Task-based Instruction as my teaching method.Stratified Teaching is used to deal with individual differences, the students are divided into four groups, according to A, B, C level in the pre-test, as shown here.As for the teaching method, Task-based Instruction is used. The students are asked to finish name card design tasks, which are authentic. Language forms and meaning are both focused. Then, lets come to the lesson. Six steps: lead-in, presentation, application, assessment, conclusion and assignment.-(Part Five)To be concrete, I will use a video to lead in the topic: name card. After that, the students will go to step two, presentation. First, the students are asked to brainstorm the essential parts of a name card. And Ill summarize their ideas and show the six key parts. In order to help them keep in mind the six elements. The initial letters of the six parts are presented in this way. And Ill explain CN means China, Pate means head. Wow,“This is my name card, Im the head of China.”And then, vocabulary practice. I will list the frequently used words in name cards, and ask the students put them into 6 frames which stand for the six key elements.Up to now, the students get the name card structure and vocabulary, but they are still reluctant to write an English name card, since according to the pre-test, the students are weak on writing companys name and address. Therefore, 4 Jigsaw games are played to help them like this: complete companies names and addresses are cut into pieces, the students need to put them in right order. After the students built their own scaffold to the task of name card design, I have them go to application part.Firstly, individual work. The students are encouraged to choose their tasks according to their levels. A-level students can choose H or M level task. B level students can choose H, M or L level task. And C level students can choose M or L level task. Before that, the “China Head” framework is presented again to help remind them of the structure “C-N-P-A-T-E” . Just translate and fill in.These are three level tasks. This is low-level task, a little bit translation and reordering. And this is middle-level task, some translation and reordering. And That is high-level task, translate the whole name card.Secondly, team work. The students in groups will coopporate to design a name card for a client in 10 minutes. Each groupll get their task from the Russian Roulette. Each member should take one sub-task.(Assessment) After the students finish their design work, one student from each group will present their design and introduce their ideas. The other students will comment on the work and presentation, point out the mistakes and correct them. I will give comments as well. At last, the students vote to decide the best design ( Votes only go to the other groups.).To draw a conclusion on what the students have learned in this unit, I have them review the six key elements and difficult expressions. To consolidate what the students have learnt in the class, I have them design their own name card for their future job as their assignment. The organization process is as above. At last, I want to look back my whole le
