How does the Australian Government Protect Their Tourism IconsAs we all know, Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, and its even 50% larger than the Europe. Also, Australia is well known for its 50,000 kilometers coastlines, the beaches, the islands, the natural views and the wild animals. Therefore, many tourists will come to Australia for a visit. However, the tourism icons in Australia in still that beautiful as they used to be. So lets try to find out what the Australian Government has done to protect their tourism icons. The Great Barrier Reef As the worlds largest reef system which has not less than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, the Great Barrier Reef covers an area of more than 344,000 square kilometers. Its located in the Coral Sea, off shores of the Queensland, north-east of Australia. There are 400 kinds of reefs, 1500 kinds of fishes, 4000 kinds of shellfishes and more than 200 kinds of birds. It became the UNESCOs world heritage in 1981.The first settlers around the Great Barrier Reef are the aborigines, but they didnt destroy this place. Its the overfishing and the over-exploitation of the new immigrants from Europe that did harm to the reefs. So in 1975, the Australian government promulgated the and set up the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to protect the environment there. In order to make sure that the tourism industry will not do something bad to the environment there, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority put up some enforcement regulations. The travel agencies which do not reach the environmental protection standards will not be allowed to go to the reefs again while the agencies which do a good job at protecting the environment will receive priority in distributing the tourism resource. Meanwhile, the travel agencies are encouraged to supervise and report each other. So the guides of the travel agencies will remind the tourists not to destroy the reefs there and they will be the observant of the park and will report to the government if the environment becomes worse. Therefore, the government and the travel agencies cooperate with each other in protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Apart from this, the Species Conservation Units was set up to monitor certain vertebrate species in the Great Barrier Reef and provide specialized advice to minimize human impact and its associated risks on protected species. Also, a consulting committee was set up for the citizens or tourists to put forward their proposal of new ways to protect the Great Barrier Reef. The Daintree RainforestThe Daintree Rainforest is a tropical rainforest on the north east coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Mossman and Cairns and its the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent as it covers an area of 1200 square kilometers. The rainforest contains most of the countrys species and part of the forest is protected by the Daintree Rainforest Park. “Images of protesters chaining themselves to trees and throwing themselves in front of bulldozers travelled around the world and brought more attention to the area than ever before.” As we can see from the above descriptions, the rainforest is well known for not only its various kinds of species but also its trees and plants. There is a boardwalk access in the Daintree Rainforest Park for the tourists so that they can guide themselves to the place they want and enjoy the views as well as the various species much better. However, most of the boardwalks in the park are all built on stilts in order to reduce the damage to the ground. There is also a cableway in the park so the tourists can go to the top of the high much easier. In order not to destroy the trees and the natural view of the forest, the government uses the helicopter to transport the material to build the cableway, which will increase the budget. Whats more, they built a foot-piece on the ground instead of using the tree as a supporter so the trees will not be destroyed. The travel agencies there bring some machines to generate electricity, and provide some organic food, water and use sustainable things to make sure that your tour can have a very happy memory here but leave only your footprints instead of any other destruction to the forest. Besides the government and the travel agencies, the traditional owner of the pack, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aborigine also did a good job in protecting the natural views of the forest. Some people said that “The persistence of this rainforest is believed to be a product of a fortuitous continental drift; after the breakup of its parent supercontinent a portion drifted toward the pole to become Antarctica, disturbing ocean currents and becoming quite chilly, while other portions were moved to hotter and drier locations. The rainforests of the parent continent preserved its climate, and so also its original forests.” And in my opinion I think peoples contribution to the protection can not be ignored. The Kakadu National ParkAs one of the very few places which have been listed as both the cultural and natural heritage in the world, the Kakadu National Park covers an area of nearly 20,000 square kilometers of exceptional natural beauty and many different kinds of living things. Also, as a living cultural landscape, generations of Bininj/Mungguy have settled there and taken care of this country for tens of thousands of years. When visiting the Kakadu National Park, you can see their spiritual and cultural connection with their mother land and this has been identified as an indispensable element of Australias great National Landscapes. Although the aborigines own this place, the park is managed by the Australian government. In order to protect the land, the government converted it to parkland so the aborigines will not raise water buffaloes there as overgrazing does harm to the land. So how can the aborigines earn their living? The government has found out that the land here is rich in uranium, so they earn money by exploiting the uranium. Whats more, the aborigines can visit the park with the tourists as a guide, in which way they can earn some money. Meanwhile, the tourists may have a better understanding about the local culture and the species here. The faunaAs a country well known for its kangaroos, koalas and other animals, Australias biodiversity is abundant. Both its geologic location and the climate contribute to the Australias faunas uniqueness. Because Australia is an island and it can drift, so it isolates from the effects of global climate change, and gradually some species had an evolution and survived. However, after the immigrants from Europe had settled there, the overfishing and the over-hurting of the animals made some species in danger. So the Australian government put up to protect them. Also, the threatened species are provided for identification and protection. In addition, as a member of the International Whaling Commission, Australia strongly opposed to hurting whale for business. Whats more, theres a kangaroo island in Australia in order to protect the animals and at the mean time the tourists can enjoy the wild animals better in this way. As every coin has two sides, the Australian government needs to reduce the number of some animals through another some animals are in danger. In order to reduce to amount of some them, the Agricultural Department of Australia encourages people to eat kangaroo, emu and crocodile as well as the camel. Because they consume a lot of water and emit a large amount of carbon dioxide, which does harm to the environment. According to the specialist, the meat of camel tastes good and its one of the health food.Thats some of the protections the Australian government has launched to protect its tourism icons and I find that quite interesting. As a country, the Australian government protects their tourism environment by setting laws. Meanwhile, they take up some other solutions to solve this problem. They force the travel agencies to avoid the tourist destruction indirectly while they cooperate with them. They consider not only saving money but also protecting the environmen
