Abstract Radio Frequency Identify (RFID) is one of technology to facilitate ubiquitous environment. For the ubiquitous environment, it is necessary to model a RFID information framework where based on network. A web service is a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that can achieve the purpose. Use the web services by internet; enterprise will exchange information quickly and easy. And enterprise could strategy alliances with different class of businesses. Create an information system and a platform is easy, but it is difficult to deploy when use RFID. Because RFID advantages is also RFID disadvantages. So to avoid the problem make a well process of business is important before the system development. This paper is a practical case study that uses RFID in bike rental, and address a method to realize. Keywords - RFID, Web Services, Ubiquitous I. INTRODUCTION Radio Frequency Identify (RFID) are emerging as a powerful technique for organizations to implement business processes through selecting and combining Web Services according to the business tasks. There is a strong need to promote businesses integration in RFID applications. One of the major topics is how to efficiently and reliably develop and build business solutions through the integration of RFID applications and existing systems. The main objective of this paper is to propose a service composition framework that adopts a web services based approach to integrate RFID business solutions. Radio Frequency Identify (RFID) is a wireless and contact-less system and it is one of the emerging technologies offering a solution, which can facilitate automation. RFID is a killer technology that elegantly provides a solution to wide range of business needs 23. And it is one of methods to build ubiquitous environments. Ubiquitous computing means the change in computer and network application environments from limited office areas to various spaces 29. RFID technology has been focused as a key technology in the implementation of ubiquitous computing 4. Ubiquitous environments can expand the enterprise business. In this paper provide an example to discuss how to use RFID to expand the business and strategy alliances. Enterprises are looking for most cost-effective and efficient way to solve currently identified business issues, as well as looking at as yet unsolved problems and are trying to determine how to apply RFID technology to solve these new problems. The role of RFID solution as a responsible and socially aware technology is to lead enterprises toward solving these existing problems 18. RFID technologies with the appropriate IS/IT infrastructure help major distributors and manufacturers, as well as other logistics operations 6. There is a question. Why use RFID not barcode? Longer read range, multiple read and larger data capacity are the difference of RFID and barcode. And the RFID tag is difficult to copy (see Table 1). But the deployment cost is high. RFID will also help companies get real-time information about operations, and help them improve their business process 7. So there are some advantages and disadvantages between RFID and barcode. This paper did not discuss the advantages and disadvantages directly, because it is depends on you how to create the operation model and application strategy. Table 1. RFID vs. Barcode Attributes RFID Barcode Data Capacity Larger Smaller Read Range Longer Shorter Multiple Read Easy Difficult Reduplication Difficult Easy Cost Higher LowerWeb services infrastructures have grown both in scale and in cope and are increasingly used to support all information system. This case use RFID combine the web services technology to expand the enterprises business and the focus is not on the system coding. In this case study, we first considered a business model for the bike rental. The business model strategy and goals are automatic, convenient, quickly, reduce manpower, and integrated information system, finally strategic alliance with other bike rental stores and different class of businesses. Applications can be written against a business operation model and deployed on an evolving device infrastructure. A prototype shows that the approach facilitates the management and programming of an RFID infrastructure 21. At the core of our methodology is a model that captures the RFID infrastructure, IT platform, business operation structure, and the relationship between them. Using this model, we describe a management system that supports common management tasks. Similarly an application framework can be created easy for solution developers to create distributed RFID applications in other companies or branches. 21. A Web Services Based Framework for RFID Bike Rental Business Solutions Kuo-shien Huang, Shun-ming TangDepartment of Information Management, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology No.123, University Road, Section 3, Douliou, Yunlin, Taiwan, R.O.C. 978-1-4244-2630-0/08/$25.00 2008 IEEE1475 Therefore, how to provide an efficient management mechanism and applications solution for clients has become the critical issue in web services applications. This paper provides a practical way to manage enterprise level web services 22. A framework for application server based web services platform is presented with Microsoft .net framework system. We propose a framework for application server based web services management, which can make good use of various infrastructure services provided by the bike rental system. II. BACKGROUND A. RFID System & Data RFID physical components contain three parts as shown in fig 1: (1) the reader, which maybe able to both read data and write data to tag, (2) the tag, which stored identification code in it and (3) the applications computer or processor, which performed information. Logical components also contain three parts as show in fig 1: (1) the RFID reader protocol, which communicated with reader and middleware, (2) the middleware, which controlled reader and transported data between reader and application, (3) the applications, which to perform the information process.18 Fig 1 Physical components of RFID Fig 2 Logical components of RFID We are interested in data management issues of RFID technology; we must know the characteristics of RFID data. RFID tags are just label identical codes in it. Most information is relative to database. Due to the nature of RFID data, data warehouse technologies need to be fully considered in RFID data management systems 7. That is because tags do not carry any information in the operation processes. The information is depends on the database that how to design. B. Web Services & Collaborative integration One unique feature of Web services is that it can be mixed and matched to construct a new business process due to the standardized service interfaces and common communication protocols. A Web services is standard based and appropriate for build common framework to reduce the barriers of business integration. The simplicity of the overall Web services model helps accelerate its deployment. The nature of web services also opens up new opportunities for both businesses and IT support 23. Web services composition can be seen as a planning problem that a sequence of services is composed into a business process to reach business goals. Web Services are modeled as actions and the business processes as plans to connect the Web Services 12. We argue that in the real world, most Web Services are informative Web Services that only provide information about the actual business services. The result for business process can be any kind of service or activity without being limiting to web services. To maximize the return on these IT investments and reap the benefits of full automation, Enterprises now want to exchange electronic information with all of other brunches and business partners. To provide business with the full benefits of electronic businesses, an infrastructure that can scale rapidly and efficiently, and then eliminates repetitive costs is required. A web services data integration network based on a hub-and-spoke architecture meets these requirements. RFID applications based on the web services, its data can through and exchange by internet at the information platform. Then design a common data structure and warehouse, the information application system can be used by many various businesses. The enterprise will join the business process and bind the system easy. Build a collaborative commerce ecosystem. III. IMPLEMENTATION There are three steps on the implementation. First, build a business strategy or model that by the enterprises need. In this step, the enterprises can initial an innovation management and find out a new technology to apply it. In this case study of the bike rental, the enterprise use RFID on it. Furthermore, we have a vision that wish to combine different kinds of business to build a shopping area and common information system platform. When business strategy has been created, the second step is scripting a scenario for combining RFID and business processes. Determine the operation flow, and design a new usage in the bike that RFID tags on it. The wide usage of RFID will depict a scenario of “an internet of things” 7. So finally construct a RFID environment and an information platform to support the management and renting. For the data exchange, web services were deployment and programming. A. Business Strategy An enterprise must make a decision on which course to accept and then build a definition of RFID business posture into its strategic plan 17. In a grand scale vision, that enterprises can collaborate with various businesses, RS 232 TCP/IP Reader Tag Electromagnetic wave Computer Reader Protocol Middleware Applications of Information System Database Edge Interface Back-end Interface Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE IEEM1476 and provide more services. For example, restaurants provide discount to eat or drink after running bike. The restaurants and caf shop do not collect customer data and create management information system. Use the common platform and some same data, it can reduce system development and create data time. Even less coding and link the system quickly and easily. Applying RFID to the enterprise business, there are three stages of evolution (1) better information, (2) process improvements and (3) business innovation 18. A method for determining business justification method 16: 1. Forming the business justification team 2. Determining the potential application areas 3. Building business cases 4. Determining priorities 5. Creating roadmaps An RFID strategy provides a roadmap to use the technology aligned with an enterprises strategic vision and goals. A one-size-fits-all strategy is generally not possible, which means that businesses must create their own RFID strategy 16. Figure 3. Common System Platform for Varity Business Concept B. Scenario for combining RFID and Business Process Detecting more complex events is one of the responsibilities of business processes 7. According to the need, the bike renting store attached the RFID tags on the bikes and designed a new process and information system for renting. A tag on the bike call bike card and a tag call people card with customers. In the reception desk, the staffs created an order and gave people card the customers. The customers must take a people card to rent bike. When customers had selected bike and went out the bike garage, where there is a reader and antenna in the exit. The reader and antenna detected the people and bike card at the same time, and then recorded the data to database. When customers returned bike where there is also a reader in the portal. C. RFID System Architecture In a RFID system, there will have more than one reader and antenna had been used. In this case, include LAN and WAN in the bike renting system, see fig.4. Web services are emerging as a standards-based platform for application integration across wide area networks and enterprises and provide the operational real-time steering of business processes 3 26. Web services can integrate and collaborate with various applications in a loosely coupled way to achieve business goals. It also decreases the complexity of application connection in order to decrease the cost of maintenance and updating 22. It provides a runtime environment for enterprise applications with various infrastructural services. Web services can be effectively deployed as a front-end to support business services 24. The web services framework is not a new information technology, but it can enhance broad of the RFID applications and business services. Figure 4. RFID Deployment Structure Business process is a base layer that provides a concept to build the whole system architecture. This layer is responsible for mapping data streams form readers to a more manageable form 7. To detect more events is one of the major responsibilities of business processes. Because RFID tags are just labeling ID on it, so we have to get any information form the data warehouse though the system process. So the data of designing is one important to the system development. We have to create a meta-model for the domain of RFID infrastructure programming and management 17. The domains are depending on what kinds of businesses. IV. DISCUSSION A. Benefits of adopting RFID-based bike rental system z Automation: Bike rental is automation, so it would not record any rental data by pen or operate PC. The data and information can auto detect and recode to system and database. Using RFID can save great deal of labor. z Quickly: Bike rental process is quickly that customers just drag the bike passing the RFID readers. RFID reader can read a large number of tags ID in one second. The system also can perform complete quickly. Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE IEEM1477 z Accuracy: RFID system can skip the fault of manual operation. z Real-time information: When the bike rental process become automation, read and store data are immediately. The managers of enterprise will get latest report quickly. B. Benefits of Combine RFID and Web Services z Extend the bike rental services: Use the internet and web services, the bike rental information system provide a service that rent a bike form location A, then return at location B. The bike renting data will be interchanged base on the web services architecture. z Strategy alliance: Duo to strategy alliance, we can build a shopping district or business park to create the new business profits. z Bind system platform quickly and easy: Base on the web services, others enterprises and stores do not need to develop new information and database. And economize on customers data input or creation, because they use the common information system and database. Fig 5. Bike Rental V. CONCLUSION This paper proposes a solution and web services oriented architecture of RFID-based location management and provide new business model for enterprises. This case was just applied in the bike rental. The future, we want to broad to many different businesses. Create a shopping or traveling area together to build the business profit opportunity. Though, for the vision, there are still many works to do and some difficult jobs to conquer. It is need a large enterprise to initial the beginning.
