of the Departmentof Defense 1 Scope1 1This testmethod describesthe procedurefor determin ingthe ductility of a bituminous material measuredby thedistanceto whichit willelongate beforebreaking whentwoends ofa briquetspecimen of the material of theformdescribed in Section4 are pulledapart at a specif i edspeed andat a specif i edtemperature Unless otherwisespecif i ed the testshall be madeatatemperature of2560 5 C andwith aspeedof5cm min65 0 At othertemperatures thespeed shouldbespecif i ed 1 2Because of the largenumber ofmethods forobtainingtest samples it isimpractical todiscuss specif i cproducts inthistest method Refer toindividual productspecif i cations forguidancein obtaininga testsample 1 3The valuesstated inSI unitsare tobe regardedas thestandard Values inparenthesis tothatshown in Fig 1 The moldshall bemade ofbrass 10 060 1mm thick the endsb andb8being knownas clips and thepartsa and a8as sidesof the mold with a brass baseplate thatislarger thanthe assembledmold onabrassplate Coat thesurface oftheplate andinterior surfacesof thesides aand a8 Fig 1 ofthe moldwith a thin layerofamixture ofrelease agent Theplate uponwhich themold isplaced shallbe fl atand levelsothat the bottom surface of themold willbe incontactthroughout Carefully heatthe sampleto preventlocal over heating untilit hasbee sufficientlyfl uid topour After athoroughstirring pour it into excessmaterial withthe trimmingtoolto makethe moldsjust levelfull N OTE2 It isremended tothe userof this standard thatallemulsif ied asphaltresidues andcutback asphaltresidues besieved througha300mm No 50 screen prior to pouringtest specimens The currentdistillationprocedures subjectthese materialsto temperatureconditionsthat willnot beachieved in thefi eld and particulatematter maydevelopin the sample residuesthat maydrastically and negatively affectthetestresults If thematerial issieved priorto testing that notationshould beincludedin thereport 5 2Keeping Specimenat StandardTemperature Place thetrimmedspecimen andmold inthe waterbath atthespecifi edtemperaturefor9065min Remove thespecimen fromtheplate bya shearingaction betweenspecimen andplate avoiding anybending ofthespecimen Remove theside piecesaanda8being carefulnottodistort orfracture thespecimen 5 3Testing Attach therings ateach endofthe clips tothepins orhooks inthe testing machine andpull thetwo clipsapartat auniform speedas specifieduntil thespecimen rupturesorreaches thelength limitationsofthe testing machine Measurethe distancein centimetresthrough which theclipshave beenpulledto producerupture orfinal length 6 Report6 1A normal test isone inwhichthematerial rupturesnearthe centerofthespecimen orreaches thelength limitationsofthe testingmachine A ruptureourring ateither clipshall notbeconsidered normal 6 2If thebituminousmateriales incontact withthesurface ofthewateror thebottomofthe bath thetestshall notbeconsidered normal Adjust thespecific gravityofthebath byusinga specific gravity additiveas describedinSection4 8sothat thetestspecimenneither estothesurfaceofthewater nor touchesthebottomofthebath at any timeduring thetest N OTE3 Some additivesusedtoadjustthespecificgravityofthewaterbath aretoxic andcan causecorrosion ofthetestingmachine If specifi cgravityadjustments havebeen madeitisremended towear gloveswhenplacing handsinthebath fluid Frequent bathfluid changesareremended toprevent damagetothetestingmachine 6 3Report anormaltestas theductility ofthe sample If anormaltest isnot obtainable report theductility asbeingunobtainable underthe conditionsofthetest If rupturedoesnot ourdue tolength limitationsofthetestingmachine report ductilityas thelength limitationin cm for example 150cm If this test ing isperformed onless thanthreereplicates ofthe samesample dueto insufficientmaterial include thenumber ofreplicates usedinthetest report 6 4In theevent ofa discrepancy the refereemethod shallbeto performthetestusing threereplicates If thediscrepancyinvolves adistillation residue pour thematerial througha300 m No 50 sieve thathasbeenpreheated at13565 C 275610 F priortopouring intotest molds Report theaverageof threenormal testsas theductility ofthesample 7 Precision7 1Criteria forjudging theaeptability ofductility testresultsat25 C 77 F obtained bythistestmethod areshownin Fig 2 N OTE4 The precisionstatement forductility as presentedinFig 2 isbased ontests performedon asphaltcements The precisionof testsonresidues suchasthose obtainedby TestMethods D1754and D2872 have notbeen
