No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift(轮班) went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job. At 9 pm., the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping. The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm.sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr.Lee and said, “You probably dont remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left. The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr.and Mrs.Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm., the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr.Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. I carefully opened the package and found a crystal bell inside. It was carved with a single word: Friendship. Now, my family, friends and I ring that bell every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm. and offer our best wishes to the man who we wont forget. 4The author had to work the night shift on Christmas Eve probably because _.Ashe was a new arrival Bshe was more experiencedCher colleagues had no passion for working Dher colleagues wanted to give her a surprise【解析】A推理判断题。 5When the author left the hospital the next morning, _.AMr.Lees heart sank BMr.Lee insisted on leaving hospitalCMr.Lee got very angry with herDMr.Lee was out of immediate danger【解析】D细节理解题。 6What does the author ring the bell every Christmas Eve for?ATo honor an old friend of hers. Whether those checkups are really necessary is, however, a matter of debate. In 2014, threequarters of dentists surveyed in New York were recommending sixmonthly checkups, despite the absence of evidence. Today, many organizations still recommend sixmonthly checkups. But for several decades some have been arguing that the choice of six months as the ideal space between visits is rather questionable. For example, Aubrey Sheiham, a professor of dental public health, published a paper complaining about the lack of evidence for sixmonthly checkups. Almost 40 years, hes still making the same point.Last year the Cochrane Collaboration performed a review of the research that had been done and they were disappointed with what they found. The quality and quantity of the research was simply too poor to back up the idea of sixmonthly checkups.Theres something else we have to bear in mind. Even when a study finds, for example, that children who go to the dentist frequently have fewer fillings, there may be other factors(因素) at work. Those same children may have other advantages; they may eat more healthily and have better quality dental equipment. How often should you visit the dentist, then? Bodies like Nice, which provides guidance for the National Health Service in England and Wales, say that the frequency of dental visits all depends on the individual. They recommend that children go at least once a year because their teeth can decay(蛀蚀) faster, while adults without problems can wait as long as two years. They even go as far as to say that longer than two years is OK for people who have shown commitment to caring for their teeth.Where does this leave the rest of us the next time we receive a card in the mail reminding us our next dental visit is due? Wed all like an excuse to go less often, and the good news is that if you dont have any problems you can probably wait a little longer than six months between visits. But exactly how long you can wait before your appointment with the dentists chair will depend on the assessment you and your dentist make of your own risk. 8Who supports sixmonthly dental checkups?AAll the dentists.BMany organizations.CAubrey Sheiham.DThe National Health Service.【解析】B细节理解题。 9The research may not prove the idea of sixmonthly checkups because _.Athere might be other factors at workBthe number of the subjects was bigCthe researchers were not qualifiedDthere was a lack of quality dental equipment【解析】A细节理解题。 10We can learn from the last two paragraphs that _.Athe frequency of dental visits varies for different peopleBpeople often find excuses to avoid the next dental visitCpeople should decide when to go to the dentist by themselvesDthe healthier a person is, the less frequent the dental visits are【解析】A推理判断题。 11What is the best title for this passage?AHow Can We Go to the Dentist Less?BWhy Do We Need to Visit Our Dentist?CHow Often Do We Need to Visit Our Dentist?DWho Should Go to the Dentist Frequently?【解析】C主旨大意题。 .阅读填空(七选五)The relationship between parents and teachers is important in the development of a child.
