辽宁盖州市2017高考英语暑假阅读理解编选(三)阅读理解推理判断题。(2015年湖北襄阳四中、龙泉中学、荆州中学联考)Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things dont turn out for the best. You may believe that when on door closes another one opens(for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams(砰然关上)in your face. Thats bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists(悲观者)have suspected all along. its called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the tings by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “Whats interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situations outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”So far,so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Dont put all your eggs in one basket.”And “Dont count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to lifes problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says ,”Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Dont feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.1. Whats the passage mainly about?A. A book that has recently been published.B. How to become successful in lifeC. The dangers of being too optimistic.D. The benefits of defensive pessimism.2. The underlined sentence “ This is not rocket science”(Para.4)means .A. its not a dangerous thing to do B. it is quite simple to understandC. the cost is not so highD. there is no real proof3. which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A. Dont put all your eggs in one basket.B. The glass is half full not half empty.C. Whatever will be, will be.D. Every cloud has a silver lining.4. The writer would probably describe himself as .A. I would have liked a son, but we just had Carmen. I see her as my best friend. I think she always comes to me first if she has a problem. We have the same sense of humour and share many interests, except that shes crazy about animals, obsessed with them-she has always had dogs, cats, and horses in her life. We were closest when she was about four, which I think is a wonderful age for a child. Thats when they need their parents most. But as soon as Carmen went to school, she seemed to grow up and grow apart from her family, and any father finds it difficult with a teenage daughter. She was very moody and had an odd group of friends. There was an endless stream of strange young men coming to our house. I remember once got annoyed with her in front of her friends and she didnt talk to me for days. Ive always wanted the best for her. We sent her to a good school, but she wasnt happy there. She left because she wanted to become an actress, so with my connections I got her into a drama school, but she didnt like that either. She worked for a while doing small roles in films, but she must have found it boring although she never really said why. She got married a few years ago, her husbands a vet. They must be happy because they work together, and she loves animals. We have the same tastes in books and music. When she was younger, I used to take her to the opera-thats my passion-but she cant have liked it very much because she hasnt come with me for years. I dont think she goes to the cinema or watches TV much. She might watch my films, but I dont know. Its not the kind of thing she talks to me about. Im very pleased to have Carmen. Shes a good daughter, but I dont think she likes my new wife very much because she doesnt visit us very often. Im looking forward to being a grandfather one day. I hope shell have a son.26. But nowadays there are so many different ways of messaging someone that it could spell the death of the traditional text as we know it. Text messaging, or texting, is the art of sending a short, electronic message between two mobile phones or tablets(平板电脑) But in the last few years, messaging in this manner has been on the decline. The rise of smartphones and tablets has seen an increase in the use of instant messaging apps(应用程序), which offer a cheap alternative to conventional texts. Using wireless internet connections or mobile data networks, people can send limitless numbers of instant messages to their friends for very little cost. Unlike traditional mobile texts, the user usually only has to pay to download the app once, after which each message they send is free. Web developers soon got the message. Instant messaging apps have become popular all over the world. WhatsApp in America and Europe, WeChat in China and KakaoTalk in South Korea are but a few which have attracted hundreds of millions of people, who use the apps to chat to their friends in real time. These apps allow people to send picture messages for free-something which previously was quite costly. Research firm Informa said that almost 19 billion messages were sent per day using chat apps in 2012, compared with 17.6 billion SMS(short message service) texts. And it expects the chat app market to grow t0 50 billion per day by 2014. So does this really mean the end for communication by text? Pamela Clark-Dickson from Informa doesnt think so. She says that there are a considerable number of people who use normal mobile phones, particularly in de
