They often behave in limited and repeated ways and have what seem like unusual strong interests. Autism is more common in boys than girls. What causes it is not clear. Scientists are studying genes and possible environmental influences. Doctors usually cannot confirm a diagnosis of autism until a child is about three years old. Rebecca Landa is a researcher at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland. Professor Landa wanted to find out what differences in development might be seen earlier. She led a new study that observed 235 babies between six and thirty-six months of age. “At six months of age, the signs of some risk for developing communication and social delays, including autism, include motor delay. For instance, when you lay your baby on their back and you pull them by the arms gently into a seated position, the babys head may nod back behind the shoulders, like poor head control. So that does not mean that the baby is going to have autism, but it does mean the baby needs to have some exercises to strengthen their body. And when they strengthen their body, they are better able to play with toys and engage with people, which then go on to help them have better outcomes.” By the time a baby is one year old, signs of possible autism include difficulty in using words and not looking eye-to-eye or reaching out to other people. By 14 months, the baby might smile less and use language less. However, Professor Landa says these signs can be so small that they might be missed during a short health exam. “Its important for parents to stay tuned in to their childrens development, and if a parent is concerned about a childs development, seek for professionals, and listen to them.” The earlier parents notice delays, she says, the sooner they can begin doing simple things that may help improve their childs development, such as talking to the child about what they are doing, commenting when the child shows them something, and playing simple games that keep the childs attention.56. Sports Report.BOver the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal - or at least many parts of it have. In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned. Ideas about social class whether a person is “working-class” or “middle-class” are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.In the past, the working-class tended to be paid less than middle-class people, such as teachers and doctors. As a result of this and also of the fact that workers jobs were generally much less secure, distinct differences in lifestyles and attitudes came into existence. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping”, would go out and spend the rest on beer and betting. The stereotype of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was and still is tended to take a longer-term view. He not only regarded buying a house as a most important thing, but also considered the education of his children as extremely important. Both of these provided him and his family with security. Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity to make such long-term plans. Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases, factory workers earn as much, if not more, than their middle-class administrators. Besides, social security and laws have made it less necessary than before to worry about “tomorrow”. Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority they had in the past. In fact, there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position. The changes in both lifestyles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people. They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes; they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in previous generations. Nevertheless, we still have a wide gap between the well-paid (whatever the type of job they may have) and the low-paid. As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will arise, or that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.61. Which of the following are seen as the main causes of class differences in the past?A. Lifestyle and position.B. Attitude and income.C. Income and job security.D. Job security and hobbies.62. When you are a fresh graduate, its difficult to find a good job and I got into debt quite rapidly. I havent been able to repay what I borrowed for some years now. My wife was in exactly the same situation when she graduated and she came into our relationship with her own debts. Then there were the expenses with the wedding, of course, and now were totally broke!B Karen JonesOur situation became critical last year, as we were in danger of getting evicted from our house because we werent able to pay the mortgage. In the end we had to borrow a lot of money from my husbands family. It has taught us a valuable lesson though: dont get a larger house than you can afford, especially for a rip-off price, and certainly dont recklessly overspend on a costly wedding if youre already in debt!C Henry PollackMy wife says that I am really stingy with money, but I would call myself sensible. I dont think spending wisely is mean at all. You see, I have always been in charge of our family finances and
