Unit 5 Nelson Mandela-a modern hero.阅读理解Youre in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one hand, youre holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one thats been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium(钠) and cholesterol(胆固醇).The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a label that says “USDA Organic”.Does that mean its better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences between organic and non-organic foods exist.Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket. The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat.Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution.Farmers who grow organic produce and meat dont use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock disease. Here are other differences between conventional farming and organic farming:Conventional farmersOrganic farmersApply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.Apply natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants.Apply insecticides to reduce pests and disease.Use beneficial insects and birds to reduce pests and disease.Give animals antibiotics (抗生素), growth hormones(激素) and medications to prevent disease and promote growth, housing.Give animals organic food and allow them access to the outdoors.Use preventive measuressuch as a balanced diet and clean housingto help minimize disease.* Organic or not? Check the label. The U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed.Any farmer or food manufacturer who labels and sells a product as organic must be USDA certified as meeting these standards.Only producers who sell less than 5,000 a year in organic foods are exempt (免除) from this certification. If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means its produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it.1.The main purpose of the passage is .A.to promote the sales of organic foodB.to inform people organic food is better for their healthC.to persuade people to become informed consumersD.to compare conventional and organic foods2.According to the passage, the conventionally grown apple .A.costs less but tastes worse than an organic oneB.doesnt look the same as an organic oneC.has proven itself acceptable by the familyD.contains more fat, sodium and cholesterol3.Which of the following methods belongs to organic farming?A.Using chemicals to kill insects and prevent disease.B.Using rotted plants as fertilizer to promote plant growth.C.Using growth hormones to speed up animals growth.D.Using pests to reduce insects and disease.4.From the passage we know the organic certification program .A.is not meant for all producers of produceB.makes it compulsory to attach a USDA Organic labelC.sets restrictions on the sales of organic produceD.requires all foods to satisfy the strict government standardsMy grandmother Adele loved culture and was generous with her gifts. When I was a child, she took me to museums, restaurants, and theatres. She showered me with gifts from her travels around the world. But I can only remember her giving me one booka book that, to this day, I have not read. She presented me with her own favorite childhood book:Hans Brinker. My grandmother was happy to share this book with me. She even decorated the title page with her proud writing.I tried to read it. I adored reading, and would dive into a new pile of books from the library all at once. But something about Hans Brinker just wouldnt let me in. The story was set in Holland, a long time ago. It was dull and unfamiliareven though I was a fan of classics of other times and places. I simply read the first pages over and over. I could not progress.Standing on a bookshelf in our living room, the book was like something I avoided. It scolded me for not being interested, for not trying hard enough, for disappointing my grandmother. The book started to fit in, almost forgotten, until Adele asked. Had I read it? Did I like it? Always determined, she wanted to know the answer. I would make some kind of excuse,I feel bad, and open it again, hoping for a new reaction. The book weighed on me.Years passed and finally Adele and I both accepted that I would never read Hans Brinker. Eventually I cleared the book from the shelf. Hans Brinkers experience led me to set a rule that Ive lived by ever since:Do not ask about a book given as a gift. Dont ask, despite your desire to discuss it to grow closer. The desire for such connection is what gives book-giving with special meaningand increases the owners possibility to be a letdown.Guilt is basically the same as for all gifts, though. If the giver doesnt have the pleasure of seeing or hearing about the gift being enjoyed, and asks whether it is, then the ownerunless she can truthfully say “yes”either has to admit to not liking the present, or else lie on the spot. Neither is pleasant. So, dont ask.5.When the author was a kid, his grandmother .A.took him to travel around the world a lotB. loved to take him to museums and storesC. shared her childhood stories with himD.gave him many gifts6.What does the author think about the book his grandmother gave him?A.Boring.
