illness Aunt Edith didn t accept defeat easily She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well known heart doctor Michael DeBakey of Houston Texas He had saved the life of someone with the same illness The article said Dr DeBakey s fees were very high Aunt Edith couldn t possibly pay them But could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay So Aunt Edith wrote to him She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live her three children who would be on their own in three or four more years among them a little girl who always dreamed of traveling and seeing the world There wasn t a word of self pity 自怜 only warmth and humor and the joy of 用心 爱心 专心4 living She mailed the letter not really expecting an answer A few days later my doorbell rang Aunt Edith didn t wait to come in she stood in the hall and read aloud Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply If you can come to Houston there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation Signed Michael DeBakey That was seven years ago Since then Aunt Edith has been around the world Her three children are happily married For her age she is one of the youngest most alive people I know 41 Aunt Edith doesn t accept defeat easily means that A she is very beautiful B she is very strong C she is very brave D she is very warm hearted 42 Why did Aunt Edith write DeBakey was full of A sadness B illness C pity D courage 44 After reading Dr DeBakey s letter Aunt Edith felt A discouraged B frightened C disappointed D encouraged B B Everyone needs friends We all like to feel close to someone It is nice to have a friend to talk laugh and do things with Surely there are times when we need to be alone We don t always want people around But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend No two people are the same Sometimes friends don t get along well which doesn t mean that they no longer like each other Most of the time they will go on being friends Sometimes friends move away then we feel very sad We miss them much but we can call them and write to them Maybe we would never see them again and we can make new friends It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them Families sometimes name their children after a close friend Many places are named after men and women if they are friendly to people in a town Some libraries are named this way So are some schools We think of these people when we go to these places There s more good news for people if they have friends These people live longer than those people if those don t have friends Why It could be that they are happier Being happy helps you stay well Or it could be just knowing that someone cares if someone cares about you you take better care of yourself 45 The first paragraph tells us A none needs friends B we always need friends around us C making friends is the need in people s life 用心 爱心 专心5 D we need to be alone 46 Which of the following is what the writer doesn t say in the passage A People are happy when their friends leave them B People may never see their friends after their friends move away C People can know their friends in different ways D People like their friends very much if they get to know them 47 If people have friends they would live longer because A they feel happier and healthier B they get a lot of help from their friends C they take better care of themselves D both A and C 48 This passage tells us A that people are all friends B that people need friends C how to get to know friends D how to name a place C From the moment that an animal is born it has to make decisions It has to decide which of the things around it are for eating and which are to be avoided when to attack and when to run away The animal is in fact playing a very dangerous game with its environment a game in which it must make decision a matter of life or death Animals ability to act reasonably is believed to come partly from what we may call genetic 遗传性的 learning which is different from the individual 个体的 learning that an animal does in the course of its own lifetime Genetic learning is learning by a species animals of the same kind as a whole and it is achieved by selection of those members of each generation that happen to act in the right way However the role of genetic learning depends upon how similar the future environment is to the past The more important individual experience is likely to be the less important is genetic learning as a means of getting over the problems of the survival game Because most animals live in ever changing environments from one generation to the next it is not surprising to find that very few species indeed depend wholly upon genetic learning In the great majority of animals their particular ways of acting in a new environment are a compound 复合体 of individual experience added to the action patterns animals are born with That is why animals can survive 49 The animal s life will come to an end A if the animal makes a wrong decision B if the animal plays a dangerous game C when the animal attacks its enemy D when the animal runs too slowly 50 Very few species depend entirely on genetic learning because A each generation has its own way of learning B their environments change all the time C they can act reasonably on their own D it takes their whole life to learn 用心 爱心 专心6 51 When the environment doesn t change much A animals cannot act in a right way B genetic learning is less important for animals C individual learning plays a less important role D animals cannot get over problems on their own 52 Animals living on generation after generation depends on A their natural action pattern with their own experience B the lessons they have learnt during their lifetime C their experience in particular environments D the knowledge passed on by their parents D An underwater robot that can hear the calls of whales and so help ships to avoid them has just been successfully tested in the Bahamas The scheme 方案 relies on a fish shaped glider 滑翔机 that moves freely through the ocean It can dive down as far as 200 meters below the surface and direct itself by shifting a weight from fore to aft 从前到后 A microphone attached to the bottom of the glider can pick up calls from all whales including the high frequency call of the beaked whale which until now has been difficult to detect The glider returns periodically to the surface to radio its data back to base or if that s too far away it can call a satellite phone and send its information anywhere in the world We are entering a new era 时代 of underwater sensing says Jim Theriault of Defence Research and Development Canada Dartmouth who ran the test We can put a glider in the Bahamas and control it in Nova Scotia The hope is that naval or other ocean going operations that use sonar 声纳 will be able to move easily track where whales are and so avoid using their noisy equipment when they are close by There is circumstantial evidence that sonar can upset whales and a number of strandings 搁浅 have been seen shortly after naval sonar operations We re trying to lower the potential risk by knowing the animals are there says Theriault 53 The shape of the underwater robot is like A a man B a fish C a snake D a turtle 54 The underwater robot is built to A help whales move to the Bahamas B help whales give birth to their young C help ships avoid whales D help humans kill more whales 55 To radio its data back to base the robot has to A dive down as far as 200 meters below the surface B stay deep in the water C call a satellite phone D come to the surface periodically 56 The best title for the passage would be 用心 爱心 专心7 A Whales are in dangerB Whales are difficult to find C Robot built to kill whalesD Robot built to spy on whales E A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world s people may not have enough water by the year 2025 A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study It says more than three hundred thirty five million people lack enough water now The people live in twenty eight countries Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East P A I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025 about three thousand million people may lack water At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems The demand for water keeps increasing Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same Mr Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems It may increase health problems Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe Mr Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases such as cholera which are carried in water Lack of water may also result in more international conflict Countries may have to compete for water in the future Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries This is true of Egypt the Netherlands Cambodia Syria Sudan and Iraq And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem One way it says is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water A third way is to use less water of agriculture The report also says long term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have 57 are expected to have severe water problems by the year 2025 A No countries B 18 countries C 28 countries D 46 countries 58 All the following are true except A Lack of water may cause conflict between countries B Egypt now has enough fresh water C There are solutions to the water problem D New industries need a lot of water 59 It can be inferred that A Lack of water may also result from international conflict 用心 爱心 专心8 B There is connection between providing clean water and slowing population growth C The ability of developing has nothing to do with lack of water D It is not known whether diseases have something to do with lack of water 60 The best title of the
