looked at his watch eight seventeen The truck started on the second try and he backed out shifted gears and moved slowly down the alley under hazy sun Through the streets of Bellingham he went heading south on Washington 11 running along the coast of Puget Sound for a few miles then following the highway as it swung east a little before meeting U S Route 20 Turning into the sun he began the long winding drive through the Cascades He liked this country and felt unstressed stopping now and then to make notes about interesting 7 possibilities for future expeditions or to shoot what he called memory snapshots The purpose of these causal photographs was to remind him of places he might want to visit again and approach more seriously In later afternoon he turned north at Spokane picking up U S Route 2 which would take him halfway across the northern United States to Duluth Minnesota He wished for the thousandth time in his life that he had a dog a golden retriever maybe for travels like this and to keep him company at home But he was frequently away overseas much of the time and it would not be fair to the animal Still he thought about it anyway In a few years he would be getting too old for the hard fieldwork I must get a dog then He said to himself Drives like this always put him into a sentimental mood The dog was part of it Robert Kincaid was alone as it s possible to be an only child parents both dead distant relatives who had lost track of him and he of them no close friends He thought about Marian She had left him nine years ago after five years of marriage He was fifty two now that would make her just under forty Marian had dreams of becoming a musician a folksinger She knew all of the Weavers songs and sang them pretty well in the coffeehouse of Seattle When he was home in the old days he drove her to the shows and sat in the audience while she sang His long absences two or three months sometimes were hard on the marriage He knew that She was aware of What he did when they decided to get married and both of them had a vague not clear sense that it could all be handled somehow It couldn t when he came from photographing a story in Iceland and she was gone The note read Robert it didn t work out I left you the Harmony guitar Stay in touch He didn t stay in touch neither did she He s signed the divorce papers when they arrived a year later and caught a plane for Australia the next day She had asked for nothing except her freedom 56 Which statement is true according to the passage A Kincaid s parents were dead and he only kept in touch with some distant relatives B Kincaid would have had a dog if he hadn t been away from home too much C Kincaid used to have a golden retriever 8 D Kincaid needed a dog in doing his hard fieldwork 57 Why did Kincaid stop to take photos while driving A To write memory snapshots B To remind himself of places he might want to visit again C To avoid forgetting the way back D To shoot beautiful scenery along the road 58 What can you know about Marian A She died after five years of marriage B She was older than Kincaid C She could sing very well and earned big money D She was not a professional pop singer 59 We can draw a conclusion from the passage that A Marian knew what would happen well before she married Kincaid B Kincaid thought his absence would be a problem when he married Marian C it turned out that Marian could not stand Kincaid s absence and left him D After Marian left him they still kept in touch with each other B I had little confidence in my ability to write a whole book though I did intuit 凭直 觉感知 that my work as a firefighter was a worthy subject And so I wrote Report From Engine Co 82 in six months and it went on to sell two million copies and to be translated into 12 languages In the years that followed I wrote three more best sellers and last year published a memoir 回忆录 A Song for Mary An Irish American Memory Being a writer had been far from my expectations being a best selling author was almost unbelievable How had it happened I often found myself thinking about it and feeling great surprise at it For me the clearest explanation is that I had found the subject I was searching for one I felt so strongly about that the writing was a natural consequence of the passion I felt I was to feel this same kind of passion when I began writing about firefighters and later when writing about my mother These are subjects that to me represent the great values of human life honesty and fairness subjects that bum within me as I write 9 Over the years all five of my children have come to me periodically with one dilemma or another Should I study English or art Should I go out for soccer or basketball Should I take a job with this company or that one My answer is always the same but yet they still ask for reassurance 安心 is a good and helpful thing Think about what you re feeling deep down in your stomach I tell them and measure the heat of the fire there for that is the passion that will flow through your heart Your education and your experience will guide you toward making a right decision but your passion will enable you to make a difference in whatever you do 60 From the first paragraph we can infer that A the writer was confident about his first book B the writer s first book was a great success C the writer published four best sellers in a year D A Song for Mary is mainly about the life in Ireland 61 Before taking up writing the writer felt it for him to be a best selling writer A unimaginable B interesting C worthwhile D possible 62 According to the writer the reason why he became successful is that A he wrote subjects popular among the readers B he had a great passion for being rich C he wrote about the subjects for which he had a passion D he put great effort into his work 63 The last paragraph mainly tells us A it is important to give our children proper guidance B education and experience are important in making a right decision C following our passion plays an important part in achieving our dream D it s necessary for children to ask parents for advice C Many East Asian cultures have a strongly collectivist 集体主义的 tendency This is even true in South Korea which has long been governed democratically 民主地 and has a more westernized culture than some Asian nations Although South Koreans may adapt more readily than some to individualistic cultures of the West they still display certain 10 habits and opinions that may be foreign to westerners For example when referring to their coworkers or family members Koreans rarely use others names unless they are present A Korean will say my colleague or my wife even if he knows that you know that person s name Another interesting aspect of Korean culture is the education system In the United States and other western countries children attend school for only 6 to 8 hours per day and although they may participate in one or two extracurricular activities they still have enough free time to play and socialize In Korea by contrast children rarely have free time In fact they often have even less free time than adults The reason for this is that Koreans value both breadth 广泛 and depth in education A typical Korean student will attend public school for a few hours per day and will then spend several more hours at a specialized school on math music or another subject Sports practice language lessons or other activities follow so that children s days often do not end until 10 pm When learning about another culture it s always important to get a sense for what that culture sees as proper in conversations In conversations between Koreans and Americans for example or between Koreans and the British this is especially important Unlike Japanese culture Korean culture is very open and friendly Koreans feel comfortable discussing aspects of their personal lives that would embarrass many westerners especially those from the U S and U K For example bodily functions are not openly discussed with strangers in many western cultures but Koreans do not shy away from these subjects In addition it is often considered rude or inappropriate for westerners to discuss financial issues like salaries and debts These topics are not taboo 禁忌的 for Koreans however 64 What do we know about South Koreans from the first paragraph A They don t value collectivism B They refuse to accept western culture C They are greatly influenced by western culture D They give up much of their traditional culture 65 Why are Korean students so busy A They are required to learn widely and deeply B They face fierce competition in exams 11 C They show more interest in learning D They are given much homework 66 What is the main idea of the second paragraph A The characters of East Asian cultures B The life of students in western countries C The education system in South Korea D Comparisons between western culture and South Korean culture 67 What probably makes westerners surprised about South Koreans A That they use others names often B That they don t have many taboos C Thai they avoid many topics D That they are too shy D Daniel needed a new carburetor 化油器 for his car Well not a new one A new one would cost at least 250 Even a rebuilt one would cost about 110 The cheapest thing to do was to go to a salvage yard California has about 50 salvage yards Most of them are in southern California The yards range in size from 10 acres to 70 acres holding anywhere from 300 to 3 000 abandoned damaged or cheaply sold cars The yards are usually located outside of downtown but near a freeway ramp A salvage yard might pay you up to 200 to take your rundown car off your hands Before they place it in the yard however they will remove all its liquids oil gas coolant 冷却剂 brake fluid 制动液 transmission fluid etc Vehicles usually sit in the yard for only a month before they are crushed 压碎 piled and then transported to a recycler Vehicle parts are inexpensive but you have to remove them yourself The carburetor that Daniel needed was only 20 Nothing in the yard however comes with a guarantee If it doesn t work or fit you can replace it with a similar item but you won t get your money hack Daniel borrowed his brother s car After paying the 3 entry fee to the man in the little wooden shack 棚屋 Daniel walked into the yard He walked about five minutes before he found the foreign car section It looked like there were at least 200 cars It was sunny and hot There was no shade anywhere in the yard Carrying his toolbox Daniel went searching for a matching carburetor 12 Almost three hours later Daniel was back at the shack He paid the 20 plus tax and wa
