countryside and have the basic ability of listening and speaking They are reluctant to speak English Most of them learn little about the universe 2 Teaching material Analysis The position and function of the teaching material This is the fourth period of this unit It attaches importance to listening and speaking And to develop the Ss listening and speaking abilities Teaching goals Knowledge goal Get students to learn some new words and expressions Ability goals To develop the Ss imaginary ability and the ability of grasping key information while listening the passage Emotion goals To help students know more about the universe and to develop Ss sense of cooperation Teaching difficult and important points Get the students to listen to and understand the listening material about gravity And with some useful expressions help them imagine themselves in space 3 Teaching and Learning Strategies Audio visual teaching method Task based approach Cooperative learning method Teaching aids PPT Multi media computer Blackboard and so on 4 Teaching procedures The time table Step1 story telling 2minutes Step2 revision 2minutes Step3 warming up 3minutes Step4 listening 14minutes Step5 speaking 14minutes Step6 question time 3minutes Step7 review and homework 2minutes Step1 Story telling 2minutes I will ask a student to tell us a story as usual before each class Aim through the everyday story telling activity to practise their speaking ability Step2 Revision 2minutes To check the word formation exercises on P28 Aim To review the prefix and suffix Step3 Warming up 3minutes First let the Ss Watch a vedio about the black holes And meanwhile told them to look at the pictures of the three scientists and guess who brought forward the black hole theory They must know it is Stephen Hawking After that I wil ask four Ss as a group to have a discussion about the three scientists Then choose one student in each group to share their information Aim To irritate the students interest and lead to the listening topic Step4 Listening 14minutes In this part there are five tasks for the Ss to complete Task 1 First listening Have the students listen to the talk and choose the best summary of the listening text The text is about how three scientists wanted to find out about the beginning of the universe The text is about how the idea of gravity has developed over a long period of time The text is about the importance of three scientists and their work Aim Help them practise grasping the general idea of the listening passage Task 2 Second listening Ask the students to listen to the talk again and fill in the first column of the chart Isaac NewtonAlbert EinsteinStephen Hawking Idea Large bodies have a force which pulls things towards them In space large objects make space and time bends Black holes have a very large mass and pull things towards them towards their edge Task 3 Third listening Then listen to the talk again and fill in the rest Isaac Newton Albert Einstein Stephen Hawking Development The bigger the object the stronger the gravity Time goes slower in very strong gravity If you go over the edge you cannot get out but if you do not you may be able to escape Aim To practise their ability of grasping key information in a short time Task 4 Fourth listening Let them listen to the whole talk and check their answers Task 5 Retelling Four students as a group to have a discussion about the information they have got and then choose one student to retell the talk Aim To get students to have a better understanding of the listening material Having finished the listening now let s come to the speaking section Step5 Speaking 14minutes In this section there are also five tasks for the Ss to finish Task 1 Warming Ask the students to suppose they are going to take a holiday and what they would take with them Make a list Aim according to this lead the Ss to the speaking topic Task 2 Discussion Then ask them what they would take if they go to the moon According to the picture on the right four students as a group to discuss the following items To protect your skin To stop you flying off the moon s surface and into space To stop your food floating away After that choose one student in each group to share their ideas Aim to practise their imaginary ability and develop their sense of cooperation Task 3 Cooperative learning Then I will work with the Ss to discuss the ideas shown by each group and find the best ones Try to collect some useful expressions Aim to learn some new expressions Task 4 Sample dialogue Then I will give them a sample dialogue Aim let them try their best to know more about the new expressions Sample Sample S1 Let s think about what we would need to protect our skin if we visited the Moon S2 I d take some skin cream That works very well when we go to the sea S3 Yes but it s going to be much too hot to put cream on your skin on the Moon S4 What s more you get direct heat from the sun There are no clouds on the Moon to protect you S3 Oh dear and I also have to carry oxygen around with me everywhere because there s no oxygen on the Moon S2 Why don t we carry the oxygen on our backs in a tank S1 Good idea but won t that hurt our skin S4 I think it will Why don t we wear a spacesuit which has the possibility of protecting your skin and helping you carry the oxygen very easily S1 A very good idea We also need some sunglasses as the sun will be as bad for our eyes as for our skin S3 That s right The helmet of the suit can have sunglasses you can use S2 How will the suit protect our skin S4 It s so hot there so I suggest we design suit that can supply cold water so the wearer feels cool and hot water to warm us if we feel cold S2 Great So I won t need sun cream after all That s good Task 5 Making conversations also four students as a group to make a conversation and choose some groups to act it out Show the useful expressions Please look at listen to Please check that You need Please pay attention to Don t
