muffins 英式松饼 weren t invented in England nor French fries in France Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads which aren t sweet are meat We take English for granted We find that quicksand can work slowly boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig If teachers taught why didn t preachers 牧师 praught If a vegetarian eats vegetables what does a humanitarian eat How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same while a wise man and a wise guy are opposite How can overlook and oversee be opposite while quite a lot and quite a few alike How can a person be off by going on Why is crazy man an insult 侮辱 while to insert a comma and say crazy man is praise English was invented by people not computers and it reflects the creativity of the human race which of course isn t a race at all That is why when the stars are out they are visible 可见的 but when the lights are out they are invisible and why when I wind up my watch I start it but when I wind up this on a math test may actually contribute to a lower test score US researchers said on Saturday Math anxiety feelings of dread and fear and avoiding math can weaken the brain s limited amount of working capacity a resource needed to calculate difficult math problems said Mark Ashcraft a psychologist at the University of Nevada Las Vegas who studies the problem It turns out that math anxiety occupies a person s working memory said Ashcraft who spoke at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Francisco Ashcraft said while easy math tasks such as addition require only a small part of a person s working memory harder calculations require much more Worrying about math takes up a large part of a person s working memory stores as well spelling disaster for the anxious student who is taking a high stakes test 高风险测验 Stress about how one does on tests like college entrance exams can make even good math students choke All of a sudden they start looking for the short cuts said Sian Beilock a researcher at the University of Chicago Although test preparation classes can help students get over this anxiety they are limited to students whose families can afford them Finally she said It may not be wise to rely completely on scores to predict who will succeed While the causes of math anxiety are unknown Ashcraft said People who manage to get over math anxiety have completely normal math ability 50 Sian Beilock points out that stress A can t be avoided before college entrance exams B contributes to scores in college entrance exams C has no effect on good math students D has side effects on students in college entrance exams 51 What does the underlined word spelling probably mean A Causing B Reducing C Taking away D Preparing for 52 What can we learn from the text A The causes of math anxiety have already been found B All of the students attend test preparation classes 6 C Math anxiety weakens working memory needed to do math D Few measures can be taken to get rid of math anxiety 53 What does the passage suggest middle school students do before exams A Get relieved B Review lessons C Go to the doctor s D Rely on scores C C A few years ago I had an aha moment regarding handwriting I had in my hand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting and then I realized whose it must be I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working with this colleague for at least a year maybe two and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point It was a very important event in the computerization of life a sign that the informal friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters and we recognized one another s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces As a child visiting my father s office I was pleased to recognize in little notes on the desks of his staff the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge except that those notes were signed dad instead of RFW All this has been on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting a book by Florey She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well but many others argue that people in a digital age can t be expected to learn to hold a pen I don t buy it I don t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive personal associations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does For many a biographer part of really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting What some people advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based on the handwriting of 16th century Italy That may sound impossibly grand as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings However they have worked in many school systems 54 Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleague s handwriting A He had worked with his colleague long enough B His colleague s handwriting was so beautiful C His colleague s handwriting was so terrible D He still had a lot of work to do 55 People working together in an office used to A talk more about handwriting B take more notes on workdays 7 C know better one another s handwriting D communicate better with one another 56 The author s father wrote notes in pen A to both his family and his staff B to his family in small letters C to his family on the fridge D to his staff on the desk 57 We can learn from the passage that the author A thinks it impossible to teach handwriting B does not want to lose handwriting C puts the blame on the computer D does not agree with Florey D D More and more the operations of our businesses governments and financial institutions are controlled by information that exists only inside computer memories Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his own purposes can get big reward Even worse a number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get away without punishment It s easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing But even if the crime is detected the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers Of course we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected But it s disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident not by systematic inspections or other security procedures The computer haiminals who have been caught many have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck Unlike other lawbreakers who must leave the country commit suicide or go to jail computer criminals sometimes escape punishment demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits All too often their demands have been met Why Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result in if the public found out that their computer had been misused They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled the most confidential 保密的 records right under the noses of the company s executives accountants and security staff And so another computer criminal departs with just the recommendations he needs to continue his crimes elsewhere 58 It can be concluded from the passage that A it is still impossible to detect computer crimes today B people commit computer crimes at the request of their company C computer crimes are very serious in the operation of financial institutions D computer criminals may escape punishment because they can t be detected 59 It is implied in the third paragraph that 8 A most computer criminals who are caught blame their bad luck B the rapid increase of computer crimes is a troublesome problem C most computer criminals are smart enough to cover up their crimes D many more computer crimes go undetected than are discovered 60 Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passage A A strict law against computer crimes must be enforced B Companies usually hesitate to uncover computer crimes to protect their reputation C Companies will guard against computer crimes to protect their reputation D Companies need to impose restrictions on confidential information 第二节 共 5 小题 每小题 2 分 满分 10 分 A The importance of the electronic waste recycle B The technologies of dealing with electronic waste C The benefit of recycling electronic waste D How does electronic waste come into being E Means of recycling electronic waste F Modern technology bringing both convenience and electronic waste 61 Modern technology provides society with many conveniences from Wi Fi enabled cell phones and ever smaller laptop computers that make out entire lives portable to energy efficientwashers that use half the power and time to complete their tasks However these new toys and gadgets finally become electronic waste once they are out of use 62 It s all electronic waste and it includes everything from empty printer ink containers to broken refrigerators As people purchase new items to replace aging electronics or make upgrades more electronic waste is generated In some cases such as 2009 s switch from analog to digital television broadcasting in the United States changes in technology are so great that old equipment may not even work at all with new systems 63 There are many reasons why it is important to recycle electronic waste Much of the material used to construct electronics including metal and plastic components can be recycled into new items at a fraction of the cost and energy use needed to create things from new raw materials Additionally many electronics contain poisonous substances that are harmful to the environment and could be deadly if they go into an area s groundwater When properly recycled they can be reused and will not do harm to the environment Because of these environmental concerns many areas require by law that electronic waste be properly recycled 9 64 The availability of electronic waste recycling programs varies from place to place Some municipalities may provide such services to area residents In some areas annual collections are held once or twice a year as a means of dealing with electronic waste as well as used engine oil or other waste that is harmful to the encironment There are also some good alternatives to recycling your electronic waste Any items that are in working condition can be given to friends or donated to charities like Goodwill or the Salvation Army who rely heavily on donations Freecycling or passing on your unwanted items to those in need of them is also a means of finding new homes for used items 65 Electronic waste recycling helps preserve the environment by reducing the amount of poisonous materials placed in landfills and saving recyclable components to save energy and other resources 第三部分 写作 共三节 满分 55 分 第一节 单词拼写 共 10 小题 每小题 1 分 满分 10 分
