Teaching Design of Partial Inversion Based on Enhancing Students Ability to Use LanguageThe Senior High School Affiliated to Guizhou University Fan XiaojieCourse AnalysisThe grammar class is about partial inversion. As an important language point, it is necessary to help students master it. Moreover, it will be conductive to daily communication, such as language understanding, writing. The course can be divided into four parts. Since group activities do good to making students deal with the tasks better, I will inspire students to participate in the classroom actively with the method of group-work strategy. All the strategies and tasks are made to help students have a better grasp of partial inversion and put more emphasis on the training of thinking individually and the practical ability.Teaching AimsEnable students to master the rules and structures of Partial Inversion.Provide a platform for the students to train their generic competence grounded on the things they get about Partial Inversion. Build a mature class presentation with the students as the main body in which they are motivated to apply their learning outcomes adequately.Important and Difficult Points Important Points Have students understand the definition and master the rules and structures of Partial Inversion. Make sure students can put what they have learned into practice.Difficult Points How to make students acceptable and inspired about the design tasks. Greet the students.2. A movie clip “Zootopia” is showed to the students.Purposes: to make students relaxed and arouse their interest in class.Step II Lead in (2 mins)Show students the introduction about the movie “Zootopia” including Partial Inversion sentences. And help students understand the definition and structures of Partial Inversion.e.g 1) Animation though it is, the film appeals to all ages, both kids and adults. 2) Before her arrival, never has a prey been a cop. 3) Had Nick not offered help, Judy would have had great difficulty finding out the truth. What is partial inversion? When part of the predicate is put before the subject and the rest of the predicate follows the subject, partial inversion is formed.Structures: Auxiliary verb/ Modal verb/ Be + Subject + the root form of verbsPurposes: To make students observe, think and be aware of Partial Inversion, then understand the definition of Partial Inversion.Step III Observation, Thinking, Summarizing and Discussion (24 mins)1. Present students a jingle (不只让步 也需祝福) about Partial Inversion, which summarizes the rules of Partial InversionPurposes: To keep students interested and have a basic grasp of Partial Inversion.2. Detailed explanation about the basic six rules of Partial Inversion will get on. As for these rules, design steps will be as follows: First, show students several sentences to let them observe, think and summarize the rules of Partial Inversion. Then, discuss in groups about the rules and check whether the jingle mentioned above is true or false. Finally practice will be done to help students consolidate what they have learned.Rules of Partial InversionRule No. 1 Words that have negative meaning are put at the beginning of the sentences.1. Sentences for observing, thinking, summarizing and discussing1) Never have I seen such a wonderful animation movie before.2) Hardly could I book a ticket as it was so popular.3) Not only did the movie make us laugh but also it set us thinking.2. Words with negative meaningnot, no, never, at no time, by no means, in no way, hardly, scarcely, barely, little, seldom, not until, not only., but also., hardly.when.; no sooner.than.3. Practice: Transform the following sentences into partial inversion.Judy never gives up no matter what difficulties she meets. Nick went nowhere but accompany Judy to each difficulty. Flash was seldom in a hurry when he works. They didnt get the address until it was dark.Rule No. 2 The structure, Only + Prep. Phrase / Adverbial Clause / Adverbs, is placed at the beginning of the sentences.1. Sentences for observing, thinking, summarizing and discussing1) Only by working hard could Judy achieve her dream of being a cop.2) Only when Judy was in zootopia / then did she realize the real challenge ahead of her.3) Only with the help of Nick could Judy solve the case successfully.Note: Sentences begun by “only + subject” are not put into partial inversion. 2. Sentences for observing, thinking, summarizing and discussing1) Child though / as he is, he knows five foreign languages.2) Anxious though / as Judy was, Flash was always calm.3) Fast though / as you read, you cant finish the book in two days.4) Lose though / as I did, I got a lot of experience.5) Raining though / as it is, Im going out for a walk.Note: Partial inversion is not allowed in the adverbial clause of concession by although. Adverbial clause of concession by though can be put into partial inversion or not. A noun is put before though or as, generally there is no articles before the noun.2. Practice: Transform the following sentences into partial inversion.Though / Although he is a strong man, he gave up.Though / Although it sounds stupid, I believed her. Though / Although he works hard, he didnt pass the exam. Though / Although he might try, he couldnt solve the problem.Though / Although he was criticized, he didnt discourage.Rule No. 4 So ( Affirmative sentence) / Neither / Nor (Negative sentence) + auxiliary verb / modal verb / be + S.1. So does my brother.4) Li Ming isnt a good student. Neither / Nor is Jim.5) He cant swim. Neither can I.6) His father doesnt smoke. Neither does my father. 2. Practice: 1) Tom doesnt like cats, (他妈妈也不喜欢)2) She has been to New York, (我姐姐也去过)3) If his wife doesnt go to the party, (他也不去)4) You forgot your purse, (Mary 也忘了)5) We will visit the Great Wall in two days. (他们也是)Rule No. 5 As for sentences of unreal condition by if, if must be deleted and had / should / were need to be placed at the beginning of sentences, the rest is constant.1. Sentences for observing, thinking, summarizing and discussing1) If Judy had obeyed her parents, she would have been unable to have the experience in Zootopia. Had Judy obeyed her parents, she would have been unable to have the experience in Zootopia.2) If I were Judy, I would hold on to my dream, too. Were I Judy, I would hold on to my dream, too.2.
