1 22 Smoking Ban 12 of people could try it possibly and only 10 answered yes they couldn t stop smoking and would do it This shows that most people hold the negative attitude to smoking and they don t support people to get rid of anxiety and worry by smoking It also suggests that most people have a rational attitude to smoking See Chart 3 below noPossibleyestotal smokers2413643 nonsmokers82612100 matter only 2 of the students are willing to stop smokers See Chart 5 below Chart 5Students Awareness of Second hand Smoking Strongly disagree Oppose but keep silent It doesn t matter Support 54 20 24 2 It is easy to understand with smoking strangers students usually keep silent Our roommates are familiar to us when we can t stand a second hand smoking we ll definitely tell them about it Introverts tend to keep silent Smoking students are relatively tolerant of strangers smoking nearby 3 2 2 Data Analysis Most college students know the health hazards of smoking and dislike smoking in public places very much but in order to avoid causing unnecessary conflict and for a series of other reasons they do not stop smoking behavior Those students who feel smoking in public places is OK have a very low awareness of the damages smoking causes to human health 11 22 Psychology teaches us that there are several main types of smokers5 the first type smokes because of the habit of smoking There is no other positive or negative motive components This illustrates the smokers curiosity and the inner void they want to fill in with smoking to kill time and somehow enrich themselves The second type of smokers seeks to stimulate a positive emotional response though smoking experience nice feelings and sensations The third type to reduces negative emotional reactions such as tension anxiety etc or interacts with others easier The second and third types of smokers also believe that smoking helps them to calm down in tense situations work and study better which shows that their self confidence is not strong enough The fourth type of smokers is influenced by social aspects of smoking such as group identity mutual recognition of other smokers etc This type can reflect a kind of vanity wrong thinking and temptation They think smoking is a sign of being mature and will be appreciated by others 3 2 3 Summary To sum it up through this survey we found out that most CQU students are aware that smoking is harmful for their health and are very much against a second hand smoking in public College students are educated people and should use their talents for the benefit of the nation set up a good example to others and stop smoking not only for their own but others sake 3 3 Effects of Smoking By Wang Qiancheng 王乾丞 王乾丞 20123164 In this section of the research report the influence of smoking on individual students of Chongqing University and the Chinese society in general are discussed and the data obtained from the Questionnaire Survey is being analyzed 3 3 1 Effects of Smoking on Individuals It is well known that smoking is harmful to our mind and body When a cigarette burns it releases amounts of tar carbon monoxide nicotine dioxin and irritating smoke which can cause different degree of damage to our body Not every student 12 22 5 knows that a modern cigarette is not simply paper and tobacco It contains more than 4 000 other chemical ingredients harmful both to human mind and body According to the statistical results of the questionnaire survey 75 of the respondents were aware of the dangers of smoking but 23 of them didn t believe it and 11 knew kinds of dangers but they still smoke why Because they think that smoking can relieve stress and it looks nice to share cigarettes among classmates and colleagues See Charts 6 below We all know that smoking affects not only a smoker s health i e a physical body but also emotions mental concepts interpersonal relations etc A transfer service companies operating DODA published a report on smoking effect of interpersonal relationship According to the results 54 of young people from 25 34 years of age admit that smoking has an effect on interpersonal relationship The answer has no effect on interpersonal relationship accounted for only 46 6 3 3 2 Effects of Second hand smoking We live in a collective environment the behavior of others unwittingly affects us and similarly we also unconsciously influence other people When smoking do you think about the feelings of others Do you consider the influence of your smoking on other people According to the data obtained from our Questionnaire Survey if a student s family has many smokers it will have a great impact on him her In this way 6 Japanese non smokers more thinks smoking is good for interpersonal relationships by source 13 22 October 2010 http www it s possible to predict the link between the smoking behavior of family members and college students smoking behavior in our school There is a certain relationship between these two factors Besides students have classmates and friends who also exercise a certain influence on them If we smoke in public places though others may hate this kind of behavior most of them will remain silent as the data of our survey showed We think that smoking in public places is an uncivilized behavior affecting people s environment and causing a series of problems but because the harm of second hand smoking is not the issue of this research I will not write more about it 3 3 3 Effects of Smoking on the Chinese Society First I want to write about the cigarette influence on Chinese economy Many people including many government officials believe that Chinese cigarette taxes make a great contribution to the country economy even though smoking is harmful to health of its population Because of high taxes the government is reluctant to give up the production and sale of tobacco However do cigarette taxes really benefit the country Maybe but only in 2006 1 million people died of smoking related diseases in China Compared to the tobacco tax of 105 billion Yuan in 2000 46 3 of which was turned into medical expenses it shows the profit is not really great And the medical expenses in China rise much faster than the tobacco industry profit taxes If due to tobacco consumption diseases and death rates in 2025 increased 33 then the cost of health care alone will be more than the tobacco industry s profits for China Other indirect costs direct medical costs and lost working capacity for a fixed number of years are enough to offset the economic value of tobacco taxes That doesn t include other economic losses caused by tobacco consumption such as fires In the long term cigarettes are extremely unfavorable to this country In a word I just want to say smoking is harmful to our society 3 3 4 Summary From our Questionnaire Survey employed in the course of investigation we 14 22 learned that the majority of Chongqing university students are aware that smoking is harmful to their health but the level of the awareness of many is not high or strong enough They know but don t believe it experimenting with their own health The effects of smoking on individual students both smokers and people around them and our society are enormous It is the time that we think seriously about the influence of smoking 3 4 Students Smoking Habits And Suggestions By Zhao Yujie 赵赵 玉洁 玉洁 20120480 In this sub section of the research report students smoking habits smoking frequency the time of smoking habit development as well as students views on smoking ban are discussed based on the analysis of the data obtained through the Questionnaire Survey of 200 Chongqing university students of different grades and majors Some reasonable suggestions are offered to conclude the discussion 3 4 1 Frequency of Smoking According to our survey 45 CQU students out of 188 respondents smoke Out of these 45 smokers 3 students attempted smoking but didn t develop this habit 23 smokers only smoke in a handful of cases 13 smokers smoke occasionally and 6 smokers smoke on a regular basis See Chart 7 below 51 29 13 7 Chart 7 Frequency of Smoking a handful of cases occasionally usually I don t smoke 15 22 We can draw a conclusion that even if there are many smokers in the University some of them doesn t indulge in smoking seriously they smoke occasionally not on a regular basis So it is gratifying that we still have hope to help them get rid of this bad habit There are few students who attempted tobacco but did not get addicted to it It is a warning for them to quit smoking at their first attempt There is no time to delay 3 4 2 Time When Smokers Develop a Smoking Habit In answer to the third question of the survey we found out that 8 of CQU smokers developed their habit to smoke in Junior High school and before 16 smokers in Senior High school and 18 smokers have developed this habit in college See Chart 8 below 0 5 10 15 20 Junior High school and before Senior High school UniversityI don t smoke Chart 8 Smoking Habit the time when the smokers smoke We see that undergraduate smokers smoking age is pretty young Many of them were teenagers when they smoked their first cigarette We know that this period of puberty is the time of physical growth and smoking undermined their health greatly 4 000 cigarette chemicals just did their job They can bring many smoking related diseases like bronchitis or pneumonia and weaken students memory We also found out that some of our students have been smoking for such a long time that we were shocked We can t ignore this condition if we cannot control it it will influence teenagers even more 3 4 3 Students Opinions on Smoking Ban 8 16 18 3 16 22 In this subsection Chongqing students opinions on smoking ban is discussed Effective May 5 2011 the smoke free laws apply to all public indoor spaces restaurants bars Internet cafes and public transportation 7 The regulation came into force 2 years ago but violators are still numerous and a question is whether the vaguely worded rules are too weak to make a real difference in the society In spite of the huge penalty of 30 000 Yuan for owners of the public places who failed to stop smokers the problem is still here many people smoke in restaurants and at work As for Chongqing University students though the majority of them support smoking ban in general some think that there is no way to implement it in China as to limit local tobacco s companies production is not possible Here is what I think of the matter 3 4 4 Summary and Suggestions As individuals we should realize the dangers of smoking accept the smoking ban laws governmental propaganda and education on smoking hazards and enhance our own self control Don t smoke even half a cigarette ever Enhance the ability to distinguish what to do and what not When we are in a group we should stick to our principles maintain ourselves resist the temptation of smoking and keep a positive mental state Secondly we should preserve our moral integrity not obey the voice of other people to do illegal things 7 New Smoking Ban Effective in China by Wang Guanggun in 2011 17 22 Chapter Four Conclusions and Other Suggestions In our survey we investigate the smoking situation in our college The final data confirmed our working hypothesis that many 23 4 of students in our university smoke Our research team found out the root cause among the reasons of students smoking is environment because the majority of students smoked affected by their friends and families Though many Chongqing university students are aware of smoking hazards the level of awareness of many is not high or strong enough They know but don t realize the effects of smoking on individual students both smokers and non smokers and our society Maybe they should think about it more seriously Some suggestions are following Parents should supervise their children better strengthening communication with them understanding their college life and paying more attention to children s physical and psychological development Discovering that their children start smoking they should give them more education and guidance to help them quit smoking More attention should be paid to children s use of pocket money It is best not to smoke in front of the children or together with them so that parents could serve a model for their children Schools should strengthen education of students about smoking provide the corresponding rules and establish a constraint mechanism Smoking should be forbidden in public places even if some smokers are unhappy about it Chongqing university authorities should try to improve anti smoking education establish counseling centers and provide doctors consultations helping students to get rid of this bad habit The school can organize students meetings with sick smokers watch anti smoking videos about smoking hazards so that they could follow the smokers advice If possible school can lead students to hospitals to visit sick smokers and see their suffering due to a long term smoking etc It will be persuasive 18 22 References 1 In China smoking s the big thing
