international institute for applied systems analysis registration number zvr 524808900 iiasa and india partnerships in science about iiasa located in laxenburg vienna the international institute for applied systems analysis addresses critical issues of global concern such as climate change energy population forestry land use change atmospheric pollution and risk analysis iiasa is non governmental and aims to ensure its research is carried out independent of government or industry influence iiasa researchers generate methods and tools useful to both decision makers and the scientific community the work is based on state of the art methodology and analytical approaches and links a variety of natural and social science disciplines since iiasa s inception in 1972 it has been the site of successful international scientific collaboration in addressing areas of concern for all societies such as energy water environment risk and human settlement now after over three decades of valuable contributions to science and policy iiasa continues as a reputed center for innovative research international interdisciplinary collaboration conferences and workshops and networking among scientists around the world iiasa is primarily sponsored by scientific national member organizations nmo in nations from africa asia europe and north america each nmo nominates one representative to iiasa s executive council which oversees the institute s development iiasa and india india has been collaborating with iiasa since the mid 70 s some of the earliest collaborations were in food and energy research development of a framework for agricultural policy and modeling and providing assessments of energy demand in india the research partnerships and collaborations with india have spawned many diverse and productive research collaborations in areas as diverse as energy forestry land use pollution mitigation and health in january 2007 india through the department of science and technology s technology information forecasting and assessment council tifac formally joined iiasa as one of its 17 national member organizations since 2008 this collaboration has resulted in the publication of approximately 20 journal articles primarily on energy biofuels emissions climate change and forestry the collaboration has also resulted in a special journal issue on the indian forest sector as well as multiple workshops relating to research and management activities including an indian as co chair of the global energy assessment established by iiasa and international partners most recently tifac has worked with iiasa and its other nmos to shape the future direction of iiasa leading to the development of a new strategic plan 2011 to 2020 that will see iiasa focus its research in the areas of energy and climate change food and water and poverty and equity key relationships include apart from tifac iiasa collaborates either formally or informally with the following indian institutions the energy research institute teri school of management at the indian institute of technology bombay dept of energy science and engineering at the indian institute of technology bombay jadavpur university kolkata india international crops research institute for the semi arid tropics icrisat institute for economic growth in delhi all disaster mitigation institute india centre for liquid crystal research country focus india2009 international institute for applied systems analysis registration number zvr 524808900 some current formal collaborations include air quality and ghg mitigation iiasa is collaborating with the energy and resources institute teri in the development and application of gains asia a scientific tool designed to identify the most viable and cost effective methods of jointly reducing emissions of air pollution and greenhouse gases in asia at the same time without compromising economic development energy security and sustainability india is a significant partner in and contributor to the global energy assessment gea the gea is a major initiative seeking to redefine the global energy policy agenda india is well represented on the gea providing one of the co chairs on the executive council four indian researchers are convening lead analysts for the gea with india holding several lead analysts positions the gea involves several organizations within india as well as austria china italy and switzerland and aims to identify integrated solutions for ameliorating existing and emerging threats associated with major global energy challenges such as providing energy services for poverty alleviation and development maintaining energy security and mitigating local regional and global environmental impacts india is represented on the 2009 evaluation committee of iiasa s technology and energy programs household energy use iiasa researchers are exploring the issues that affect household energy the associated access to energy supplies and the link to poverty india is also one of the countries involved in a global research project that is exploring the implications of demographic change for energy and emissions in india climate modeling iiasa serves on the steering committee of the asian modeling comparison project which involves a number of national teams from india iiasa is also on the executive committee of the integrated assessment modeling consortium which is tasked with the development of the scenario modeling for the intergovernmental panel on climate change ipcc 5th assessment reports understanding energy issues in asia a memorandum of understanding has been signed between india integrated research and action for development irade and iiasa the proposed iiasa irade collaboration aims to explore the energy issues relevant within the south asian indian context through improving understanding of the existing global scenarios so that irade can further analyze them in a regional context food security iiasa research involving the international crops research institute for the semi arid tropics icrisat india and partner countries vietnam ethiopia kenya and south africa is assessing options for improving the productivity of agriculture in the rain fed systems of the semi arid tropics thus helping to improve food security in these regions reducing disaster risk research to assess the benefits of pro active disaster risk management to meet the needs of vulnerable communities in south asia this research is funded by uk department of international development dfid in collaboration with the institute for social and environmental transition usa of which india is a collaborator another project has recently commenced involving iiasa and the all disaster mitigation institute india to evaluate the risks posed to india by natural disasters iiasa also presented to a workshop on strategic tools for disaster risk management in feb 09 international institute for applied systems analysis registration number zvr 524808900 forest management one of the areas of study tifac and iiasa have embarked on is an assessment of the status and relationship between the indian forest sector and indian society as part of this collaboration a workshop was held in new delhi in 2007 to examine the economic societal and environmental benefits provided by the indian forests its status in terms of knowledge and knowledge gaps major issues and future directions for management based on this workshop 25 papers were commissioned with the aim of providing a more consistent picture of the current status of various aspects of the indian forestry system and importantly identifying the actions required to achieve sustainable development of the indian forest sector these papers are published in the special issue of international forest review iiasa and india people in 2008 2009 seven indian nationals were employed by iiasa in the areas of energy risk and vulnerability air quality forestry and population approximately 40 researchers and or advisors from india visited iiasa and or participated in iiasa hosted events at laxenburg 2008 2009 visits were primarily associated with the global energy assessment eight iiasa scientists visited india and participated in formal events in the same period iiasa in collaboration with teri have applied to co host a side event at the unfcc cop15 climate change meetings in copenhagen in december 09 iiasa has hosted and or participated in several training workshops in india in 08 09 including indian national workshop on strategic tools for disaster risk mgmt a modeling training workshop in india in feb 09 with indian nmo iiasa in collaboration with the institute for economic growth delhi are organizing a workshop on micro simulation modeling with special reference to health as part of a proposed on going relationship with india in the area of health research young scientists summer program the annual young scientists summer program yssp is a program for young researchers funded primarily through the national member organizations it aims to identify talented young researchers who can broaden the research base at iiasa by developing new ideas and contributing to ongoing research activities since 1999 15 indian students have participated in this program six in 2008 2009 further information international institute for applied
