W5。W5 = who what where when why。 (Jade) It was a sunny day when we arrived at Belfast City Airport. Mark- the director of ELSU office, gave us a big welcome. In the afternoon we had some sandwich and he showed us the surroundings of Queens University. Queens University Belfast has a record of academic achievement which stretches back more than 150 years. Founded by Queen Victoria, the Queens University in Ireland, was designed to be a non-denominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. The most significant date in the early years of the Universitys life was 1908 when the three Queens Colleges, and the Royal University (which replaced the Queens University in Ireland in 1879), were dissolved and replaced by the Queens University of Belfast and the National University of Ireland. As an independent institution, governed by its own Senate, Queens flourished. Increasing student numbers and new staff were accommodated in a number of new buildings and the academic programme increased in range. Arts, Science, Law and Medicine were supplemented by Faculties of Commerce, Applied Science and Technology, Agriculture, and Theology. The Universitys Chancellor, former United States Senator, George Mitchell. One of the main architects of the peace process in Northern Ireland, and an international statesman, Senator Mitchell is one of a distinguished line of chancellors stretching back to the Ninth Earl of Shaftsbury, and including Field Marshall the Viscount Allenbrooke, the actor-manager Sir Tyrone Guthrie and Lord Ashby. We had different subjects to disgust about every week. To make it easier for us to understand, they ask us to tell them about Taiwan and we will compare the difference together. On the first day we had our registration done and got our new student ID. The next day we had our first Irish Dancing class in the Crescent Arts Centre with Bernie. It was a very special experience for me. The main thing you have to now is count “one two three” and go with the music. We were shy at the beginning because we werent use to dance with boys. On the first Thursday Queens University invited us to a welcome dinner at the great hall. The food was delicious and the dessert was very tasty. Before the dinner table was ready we had a glass of wine on the grass and met a lot of new friends from the world. The evening weather was very cool and suitable for taking a walk down the river (River Logan). So my friend and I decided to take a walk down the lane and thought of it as a healthy exercise after dinner. On the first weekend we went to Edinburgh. We stayed at Pollock Halls which is apart of the Edinburgh University and it is used as an accommodation for other students from other Universitys in UK. I had a very embarrassing experience there, I locked myself out of my room at late evening and I had to go to the information desk to get my door opened. It was sunny when we arrived. Although we visited Edinburgh Castle in an hour, but I think it was worth it. We were lucky to see a private party held up in the Castle. Mighty Edinburgh Castle dominates its city as no other in Europe. For 3000 years humans have sought shelter on the castle rock. In ancient times they called it Din Eidyn, “the stronghold of Eidyn”. Then came the invading Angles, around AD638, and ever since then the rock has been known by its English name Edinburgh. There is a saying “that the Croun, Sceptre, and Sword of State continue to be kept as they are within that part of the United Kingdom now called Scotland; and that they shall so remain in all times coming, notwithstanding the Union” and “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God. There shall no evil happen to them. They are in peace”. The second sentence was written on the walls in the church to memorial the brave soldiers who have been killed in The Scottish National War. The next day, we spend some of the day at the Royal Museum & Museum of Scotland. There are many historical arts in the building. The thing that most interests me is the Mummy from Egypt. There are many beautiful historical buildings I would like to see and explore but we didnt have enough time. The view there was unforgettable. Although walking up and down the streets is very tiring, it is a city of beauty. I also bought something special for my father here because I couldnt be with him on Fathers Day. I would like to see every stone in the city if I have the opportunity to go there again. It was a pity we didnt have the opportunity to have an experience of the “Art Festival”. On 25th July we had a tour buy bus of Belfast and the surrounding area with Sheila. The bus driver gave us a great introduction about Titanic, which was built in a boat yard in Belfast, and the histories about the war of the Northern Ireland and Ireland and the meanings of the wall paintings. Disco at the Precious Nightclub, Odyssey, was the first nightclub Ive ever want in my life. It was quite an experience for me. On Friday morning, we went to a traditional market “St Georges Market”, you can buy all kinds of things there including food and antiques from all over the world. We also had the opportunity to visit Ulster Museum, which is famous for its Ancient Egypt collections. There are also current exhibits including Post War international paintings and Early Irish exhibits. On the second weekend we had a enjoyable day at Dublin the beautiful capital city of Ireland. Ann gave us a quick tour of Trinity College the most famous college in Ireland. the most famous beer in Northern Ireland is Guinness. Although we are not familiar with Alcoholic drinks but we definitely know what the most popular kind in the entire world is. There is a saying: “When you meet up with friends, theres something hypnotic about watching those Beautiful, expertly-poured pints surge and settle. Which probably explains that two minutes of quiet anticipation before the conversation re-starts. Proper order, too”. The most that impress me is the sky bar in the Guinness Storehouse. The storehouse building was completed in 1904. This incredible building was constructed in the style of the Chicago School of Architecture, its massive steel beams providing the structure of the building. The storehouse was used to house the fermentation process in which yeast is added to the beer. The core of the GUINNESS STOREHOUSE building is a giant glass pint, stretching up from the Reception on the Ground Floor to Gravity, the bar in the sky. Every floor is flooded with light, creating an impressive feeling of space. If full, the giant pint could hold approximately14.3 million pints of Guinness. Some of us was very exciting to get that free pint of Guinness. The taste was very freshing but I didnt enjoyed it very much. Later in the day we went shopping on Grafton Street. We were lucky to see some street shows that day. On the way back to Belfast everyone was very tired and fell asleep and I took photos of them while they were sleeping. July 30th, we went shopping at Belfast city centre, until now I still have a very strong image of the bill we had, it was about 60cm long. A few days later, we went to visit the Belfast city Hall. We were very lucky to see a wedding held up at the city hall. Belfast City Hall opened its doors on the first of August1906, at a time of unprecedented prosperity and industrial might for the city. The magnificent building is a lasting landmark to Belfasts success and civic pride. There are some rooms the guide introduced to us and let us walk down the corridors. The first one was The Council Chamber; Belfast City Council sits here on the first working day of each month, its 51 members privileged to conduct business in such a setting. Similar to the House of Commons, Westminster, the seating faces inward to a central gangway which leads to a dais at the top of the chamber. The elaborately hand carved and pierced oak screen on the dais forms an impressive backdrop for the Lord Mayor and Chief Executive. A reference to the old Belfast Corporation is found in the plasterwork with a BC design. In 1973 local government functions were reorganized and Belfast Corporation became Belfast City Council. The next room is The Great Hall; looking at this magnificent room, its hard to believe the Great Hall was almost totally destroyed by a German air raid on the night of 4th May, 1941. By 1952 the hall had been rebuilt and over the years it has been restored to its former grandeur. The postwar cathode lighting was replaced by replicas of the original chandeliers which had a nautical theme. Fortunately the manufacturer was still in existence and had archived the designs. 450 people can be seated in the room. You can also arrange your wedding in the Belfast City but it is not acceptable to have a private party inside. On August 5th we spend our afternoon at W5, Odyssey. W5 means “who” “what” “where” “when” “why”. There are many scientific, myths, and monsters events. For this summer there are Mythical Masks, Unicorn, and Monsters, on other floors there are different items for brain storming. The most special thing is the “Magic Piano Stairs” one staircase for one note. That night, we had dinner with some important people from school, the food was nice but the hot and spicy soup was too hot for us. On the last weekend, we visited the famous Giants Causeway. On the way we saw lots of sheep on the grass beside the highway. It was a very beautiful day, not too hot but windy. There are many kind of legend for the ancient rocks. Long time ago, there was a giant called MacCool who wants to do battle with a rival giant in Scotland, known as Benandonner. The two giant had never met, so Finn built enormous stepping stone across the sea so that the Scottish giant could cross to Ireland to face the challenge. The story takes a humorous twist when Finn, seeing the great bulk of Benandonner approaching, flees home in fear and asks his wife, Oonagh, to hide him. Oonagh is said to have disguised Finn as a baby, and put him in a huge cradle. When Benandonner saw the size of the “infant”, he assumed the father must be gigantic indeed, and fled home in
