You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive design is irresistible, although this method of selecting ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather uninteresting book, you soon become lost in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must hurry to keep some forgotten appointmentwithout buying a book, of course. The opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can go to such places as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You neednt buy anything you dont want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. You may want to find out where a particular section is. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. But when he has led you there, the assistant should leave politely and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.1. The best title for this passage may be _. A. The Attraction of Bookshops B. How to Spend Your Time C. Bookshops and Their Assistants D. Buying Books2. According to the author, the best way to escape the realities of everyday life is _. A. to chat with an assistant in a bookshop B. to take a walk in the open air C. to make some appointment in a bookshop D. to stay reading books of various kinds in a bookshop3. In a good bookshop, _. A. all the books there are interesting B. you are satisfied C. you can find shelter from a shower D. you need to buy something you dont want4. An assistant in a bookshop helps you _. There are only a few places where it is possible to escape the realities of life. C. People go to bookshops only to buy books. D. A book with an attractive design must not be necessarily interesting.( 2 )There are stories about two U. S. presidents, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK. We dont know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write all correct on it. The problem was that he didnt know how to spell, so what he really wrote was ol korekt. After a while, he shortened that term to OK.The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. Van Burens friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called OK.6. The author _.A. believes both of the stories B. doesnt believe a word of the storiesC. is not sure whether the stories are true D. is telling the stories just for fun7. According to the passage, President Jackson _.A. couldnt draw up any documents at allB. didnt like to read important papers by himselfC. Here the traditional picture is changing: every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent a widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns any more.
