Award,which we present once a year to an individual whose contributions to bettering the lives of our citizens are particularly outstanding.While this is only a symbolic gesture,it is hoped that the work that people are engaged in will be highlighted by this award .Two months ago,our committee asked for names of possible recipients who have exhibited a special lever of commitment and courage in our struggle to better the condition of our people.Our past few years,the selection of just one of them was difficult.However,we have selected a most deserving person.Our award goes to a woman who has been a tower of strength to all who are around her.As a government social worker, she helps the very poorest families try to get on their feet.She visites the homes of her clients,discusses their situation and problems,and works resolve the worst problems,so that some of the family members can begin to work outside the home to support the family. In case where people are incapable of working,she arranges for the appropriate agencies to provide for the families. Its a difficult job to face,day after day,visiting the poorest,most neglected people in our society.But this remarkable woman does this and more.In researching her accomplishments,our committee talked to many of the people she has helped over the years and they all speak of her understanding and compassion,of her strength and spirit which many said gave them a feeling of hope, something they had abandoned.Her coworkers hold her in the highest regards and marver at her energy and devotion to her work. This statue is by one of our premier sculptors, who was very happy to work on this project.It is fitting that this modern building will house the Architecture School.This department boasts several internationally acclaimed architects among its professors.The high lever of instruction and the use of the most up-to-date teaching methods has been producing many highly talented,and inspired young architects over the past few years.Once working in their fields,these young people have proven themselves to be among the worlds finest.The face of Beijing is slowly showing the new image of these talented individuals,where only a few years ago, most architectural services were hired out to foreign contractors.We can proudly say that weve turned that situation around and use mostly our home grown talent now.We,in the Artists Association,feel that the design of our cities represents artistic expression sometimes overlooked by planners and developers.
