Words review Students read the vocabulary together (page 145) Teacher correct their pronunciation. Check exercises 1. 4 on page 2.3II. Expressions social being ? social rules/ skills ? social events/occasions? Since every civilized person is a social being, we should learn some social rules/skills at certain social events/occasions.“today, we will focus on social skills” (lead -in)III. Fast Reading Go through the whole text in 5 minutes, then answer three questions. Q1: Where can you find this passage?A. an English teaching book.B. a business courseC. a book which tells you what to do at social eventsD. a book to help you prepare for a speaking examinationQ2: How many tips are given in this passage? What are they?Q3: Why the author raise four questions at the very beginning of the text?To draw readers attention.To arouse readers interest.IV. Careful reading Part1 (para1-2) Q1:Whats aim of this passage? To provide ideas of social skills for those who lack social skills. Part 2 (tip 1) Q1: How to do small talk? Be prepared. Have some low-risk conversations ready. Think of a recent news story, study, safe topic, topic to avoid. Q2: Choose the right options as low-risk conversations. a film star, sport, art, religion, music, age, marriage, weather, travel, cars Part 3 (tip 2) Try to be a good listener as well as a good talker. Dos Donts Use encouraging noises and gestures Look at your watch Keep good eye-contact yawn sigh Use positive body language Change the subjectAsk for more information to show interest Look away from the person who is talking to you -Finish other persons sentence Q1: What do people think about a person who talks too much? They wont impress people much. Q2: Why is it a good idea to make encouraging noises and gestures? To show your interest. Q3: Translate the sentence “ Talk to a man about himself, and he will speak to you for hours.” 和一个人谈论他自己,他会和你说上几个小时。Part4 (tip3) Q1 What do you need to find out before going to a party? when to arrive, how long to stay, when to leave, what to take Q2: What conclusions can we draw from tip 3?A. Post reading(summary)Listen to the whole text, finish all the blanks.Small talk is very important and prepares you for more serious conversations. Be prepared. Have some low-risk conversation openers ready. Listening is a skill which most people lack, but communication is a two-way process-it involves speaking and listening.
