AmbtionNowhere is the word ambition so vividly and accurately defined than in Joseph Epsteins comment that “in the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.” A cosmetic definition as it seems, however, Epsteins words can, on the whole, be interpreted and summarized into one sentence: to be ambitious is to strive for our own personal goals set upon our own values regardless of the possible outcome and controversy. In other words, the two indispensable parts of ambition include: firstly, making your own unique targets; secondly, persisting in achieving these aims without being distracted by othersridicule and scorn. To begin with, visualizing your personal goals instead of drifting among the mass is, undoubtedly, the very prerequisite of the fulfillment of your aims. The reason for this is simple. We ourselves are the best judges of our capabilities and potentials. And the same voice is echoed in that “we decide what is important and what is trivial in life.” Madame Currie could never have achieved so many honors and breakthroughs in science and the discovery of radium if she took the same path as majority of the women in her time. It was her decision to devote her time and energy to science not household chores that made her stand our so prominently. On the other hand, she might have been just as plain and mundane as other women if she did not match herself with her personal aspirations and goals. Therefore, having your own goals is essential to the realization of ambition. Then there is the issue of how one should pursue these goals. Again Epstein gave a perfect explanation that “but no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these decisions and choices are ours to make.” An excellent statement. There are times when we give up our beliefs and aims simply because of a different perspective of someone else and there are definitely days when we feel frustrated and beaten in face of scathing scorn from the world. Yet Epstein shows us a higher path on which we are encouraged to stick to our ways and endure in spite of all possible criticism and indifference. And history has proved so many times that persistence regardless of hardship and ridicule wins us victory. Thus it is safe to say that persistence and a firm belief of self is an integral part of ambition.Of course, Joseph Epsteins quotation is definitely richer in content and intended messages than what I have illustrated and developed above, however, the essence of his saying, that ambition is of our own choosing and that we ought to hold fast to it make its way through close scrutiny and prevail.(20)Joseph, a famous American writer once said, “We decide what is important and what is trivial. We decide that what make us significant is what we do or what we refuse to do.” What he said shows it important for us to decide what kind of people we want to be and what kind of life we tend to live. Thus, in my opinion, every person should have a certain ambition. In the first place, ambitions make us live a meaningful life. As Joseph said” As we decide, are formed our lives”. If we have a certain ambition, that means we have a certain goal which we want to reach. In order to take our dream into reality, we till try our best, learn everything in this field and make us qualified. During the time we make great efforts, we live a meaningful life. Whether or not we get a success in the end, we will have more knowledge than others and become an expert in this field. In the second place, ambitions make us optimistic. As the saying goes: “Where there is a will, there is a way.” We will always give best wishes to ourselves and believe , more or less, we will get some achievements. A survey made by the Students Union in my college indicates that a student with a certain ambition will get a better career due to his belief, confidence and being optimistic which result from ambitions.Last but not least, ambitions are regarded as qualities in todays complex and competitive society. For example, if an interviewee have no ambitions and does not want to get promotion, he will not appreciated by the interviewers. Thus, he will not pass the interview and get a good job. Nowadays, more CEOs prefer employees with ambitions. They argue that these qualified persons will contribute more than others and add efficiency to the company. All in all, we should have a certain ambition because it makes our lives more meaningful, let us become optimistic and it is required everywhere. Therefore, we student should have a certain ambition and get ready to venture into the society. (17)New concepts always penetrate our daily lives without being noticed. When most of us are accustomed to spending the spare time reading, more and more college students begin to take part-time job either inside or outside the campus. It is my constant belief that its pros outweigh its cons; by that I mean, it has far more potential advantages than disadvantages that can be minimized. Firstly, a part-time job provide a student with a chance to practice what he has learned from books, especially in the fields such as economics, engineering and teaching, practice makes perfect. Secondly, it can help the students to be economically independent of their parents, although sometimes just partially. One the one hand, parents may have a lighter burden of the college tuitions and miscellaneous expenses of their sons or daughters than they used to have. One the other hand, we students will realize that money comes not as easily as we think, thus develop good habits of not wasting it. And finally, if we can balance the time spent one both the study and the work, it wont become the cause of failure in academic study. Whats more, a part time job may make our campus life more exciting. In view of the proceeding paragraph, I would like to recommend that every student take a part- time job, if possible.Sowing the Seeds, Nurturing Growth and Harvesting the RewardsIt is widely believed nowadays that the success of a university student follows very much the same pattern as that of farming - sowing the seeds, nurturing growth and harvesting the rewards. With my own experience as a university student, I cant agree more. From the very first day we become university students, we have actually started the process of farming. (metaphor) We all come with our seeds of education ready made which are our personal interests and certain aptitude, so the first thing to do is sowing the seeds, choosing the right field for a particular crop. We also choose our major, decide the kinds of career we are craving for and the kind of individuals we are to become. Take myself as an example. As a high school graduate, I find the study of culture is where my interest lies. Since language and literature are vehicles of culture. I am more than satisfied with the major “English language and literature”, in other words, I have chosen the right place to fulfill my dream to sow the seeds. Now the nest thing to do is to nurture the growth. Much as its essential for crops to receive sunshine, water, air, minerals, etc. in order to grow up, we university students must avail ourselves of all possible absorb knowledge in order to be educated and nurtured. We should be open-minded to all kinds of knowledge and read extensively. And all-round personality is what a sound education aims to produce. We are exposed to a sea of knowledge in much the same way as the crop is exposed to its natural environment. Also in the farming process, the farmer needs to get the right fertilizers for his crops. The same is true of our study. When we have to gather information and ideas carefully before absorbing them, we need to make sure all that we learn should by no means pervert our nature or turn ourselves into inert bookworms. That is to say, nurturing should not destroy the seeds. Finally, after a long period of arduous farming and onerous nurturing, we come to the time of harvest. To a farmer, his reward is more than a bumpy harvest; rather, it has a lot to do with his sense of achievement. To a student, scholarship and academic records have very little to do with his reward, either. His exploration in the process of learning has shaped his outlook on life, enriched his experience and cultured his personality. In short, the elements of a successful university student bear much resemblance to those of a good farmer. Dont forget, a good nurturing promises a bumpy harvest.Sowing the Seeds, Nurturing Growth and Harvesting the RewardsAlmost every university students aims at achieving success in their studies. But how? Let me draw a simple analogy between the harvest reaping process for a farmer and the road leading toward success in study for a university student. In brief, sowing the seeds, nurturing growth and harvesting the rewards in the former case can be regarded as setting practical goals, exerting unremitting efforts and attaining the well earned success respectively. First of all, just as a farmer should choose the right seeds for sowing based on the climatic conditions, soil texture and some other related factors which greatly affect the growth of the seeds, so a student should set practical goals in the light of his or her unique situation. Both overestimation and underestimation of self-capacity should be avoided. Take myself as an example, at the beginning of every semester, I draw up a self-development scheme based on my academic performance during the past year and the ever-changing environment around me. I never aim too high or ignore my potential, which makes the following step towards the final success more attainable.Secondly, a farmer needs assiduous efforts to nurture the growth after sowing te seeds. And this is the same case with our study. Although there might be unfavorable situations cropping up all the way through a students study, hard work will pay in the end. Speaking of my own experiences, I make every effort to attain my academic goal. When some of my fellow students mess around and even urge me to join them in the pursuit of pleasure, I always let them down. Weekends and holidays seem to have been removed from my calendar. As I believe, hard work is the ladder to success. As long as one tries to achieve his goal with might and main, no matter he is a farmer or a university student, a good harvest can be expected. As for me, I did sense the thrill of accomplishment when I outperformed my fellow students in studies after enduring the hardship on my way to success. In summary, if a university student really wants to achieve success in his studies, he should be wise in sowing the seeds, be industrious in nurturing growth and be joyful in harvesting in the rewards.Should Universities Students Go in for Business? (2004) It is universally acknowledged that the inherent duty a students has in studying, to which university students are no exception. However, with the swift development of economy, modern students are faced with a burgeoning number of temptations. They are incubated at a premature stage with a perverse sense of competition, and that place a large part in the emergence of early business operations at college. The controversial case, as I see it, should be given a firm, uncompromising “no” because of the special value from college experience. First of all, I feel there is a critical need to restate the values gaining from college experience before any rational judgment of the issue. The process we call college education is a precious opportunity for every student to have his or her mental muscles trained. This intellectual training that demands a great deal of time and effort is hardly anywhere to be found after graduation. What we expect higher education to achieve is to broaden students scope of knowledge and teach them how to deal with real-life problems by relying on mental complexity that we exercise to attend in college. So long as academic programs carried out in college do not let us down, I see no reason for any disturbance to study. With this in mind, I feel better qualified to say that participation in business, no matter part-time or full-time, is a serious interference with academic study in college. The sophomores and juniors that tried their hand at business have turned a blind eye to the fact that the values they get from running six small shops are no equivalent to those they should have had in classrooms. The main point is that those activities, including, presumably, goods supply, price competition, and sell tips, are intellectually undemanding, at least not comparable to the systematic training in a particular field on campus. Another prevalent illusion some have about early business experience is that it prepares the students for the transmission from college to society. This blind view assumes its power only when we neglect another essential quality of college education, as a social process. The competitive spirit can be learned from “rivalry” between students; interpersonal relationship is readily available with so many peers that treasure campus life. If college has not the hustle and bustle in the large world, it does not, accordingly, become a dull place; rather, it provides students with an ideal environment for intellectual improvement, which will reveal its larger good when graduates begin to serve the public. Taking all these into account, I actually assume myself that students should be discouraged to plunge into business in course of their study.A growing number of university students are dauntedlessly trying their handsat doingbusiness. You may no longer feel estonishedwhenyou see your friends opening up a cute store ofclothing or even a net bar near university. Is the phenomenon a blessing or curse? While conceding the fact that doing business may better prepare students to society and give them more social experiences, I firmly hold that the drawbacks of university students going in for business far surpassed its merits. As a threshold matter, going in for business goes against the goal of our university education. Universities tend to cultivate students minds and aims at preparing future elites in society. In achieving this aim, universities provides myriads of courses to satisfy students needs and appetite for knowledge. Therefoer, as students in universities, study is without doubt still their priority. It is not hard to imagine if a student tries business, he would definately contribute less tiem and energy to his professional study. Anyway, doing business takes tremendous time and efforts. Moreover, failure in business is more
