Since 1970s, linguists has been discussing and analyzing the phenomenon of code-switching from the perspectives of syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, etc. This paper aims to discuss some functions and influencing factors of code-switching from the standing of a foreign language learner, with examples and materials collected from the conversations of college students, and points out the importance of code-switching strategy for foreign language learners. IntroductionAccording to Myers-Scotton, Code-switching refers to the phenomenon that a speaker switches from language A to Language B, or from a language variant X to another language variant Y (cf., Yu & Li, 2007:12). Meyers-Scotton, the famous US linguist, proposes the theory of Markedness Model, argues that the variants people switched to have a force of indexicality, by which people hope to build up a rights-and-obligations set to identify the switcher. The process of the switching is only one of the means to negotiate the set and a language form to maintain it (cf., Zhaoaruna, 2008: 2). And he also argued that Code-switching is a purposeful, smart speech acts under the instructions of the accommodation. The actor who switches his language should have the common sense and be performative. Under the accommodational context, both the speaker and the listener share the same markedness metrics, by which to value the code switched whether to the accommodation or to the expectation. The so called markedness metrics are universal in the peoples speeches, and an important component of the intrinsic ability of communication.Another famous theory on code-switching is the theory of linguistic adaptation, it has been worked out by the Belgian pragmatic Jef-Verschueren, in his work Understanding Pragmatics, he maintains that language use is a ceaseless process of language choice, and of course code-switching is the result of the choice（Li, 2008:3）. The motive of using CS strategies is for the convenience of communication and for the survival of human being. The action of language choice is compelled by the force of adaptation. CS is only a response of the communicator intending to adapt himself to the context. For this reason, people changing of their language is for the purpose of continuing their communications, and hidden behind CS are the switchers purposes and motives.
