On going aboard英语10（4）班 陈妙儿 10106014009Going aboard is not a novel thing anymore in the 21st century. As an English major, my dream is going aboard someday, I dont want to go to university there, but I do want to travel around the whole USA.Id love to find a job such as waitress or shop assistant when my money is used up and I would going on travelling when I save enough money for me travelling to next place. I dont know whether I have chance to realize this dream, but I will try all my effort to this. My father was a cook in a Northern European countryNorway when he was in his young age and now he retired and is back to China. When I was a little girl, I like listening to my father when he talked about his life in Norway. He told me that Norway is a very beautiful country, it is very cold in winter and it snows. Because Norway is a country in the Arctic Circle, the Polar Light can be seen in extremely clear weather. And something most impressive to me is in Norway, fish in the sea is very easy, you even dont need to prepare a fishing rod. You can easily catch a big fish by using a fish line with a steel hook. I would imagine how wonderful it would be if I got a chance to go aboard only for one day! Life in other countries is so great and attractive to me even when I was very little. The reason why we think life in other countries are better than it in China maybe because life there is greatly different, people all like new things.But the reason why many parents want to send their children aboard may not only because life there is different, but because they aim to let their children get better education and live a better life there. Most people think that Chinese structure of education is of great disadvantages .China is chiefly exam-oriented education whose main characteristic is that judges people mainly from the marks they get in the exams .It is kind of forced-feeding education which cannot help their children adapt to the society .Furthermore ,regional unfairness also exists in nowadays education ,which means students in some areas are easier to go to a colleague while some others are much harder ,especially our capital Beijing.Thats the main reason explaining why many parents are willing to send their children aboard for study. Also, if heir children want to stay aboard after their college graduation, they will become a citizen and get most of the welfare of that country. Or if they want to go back to their motherland, they will get a job with higher salaries than any others and higher reputation because they return overseas. It doesnt mean that people grow up and so to college domestically cannot get jobs with high salaries or reputation, it just mean they cannot get that as easily as those who return overseas. In China, to some extent, overseas are better than natives. Children who are sent to aboard by their parents may feel lonely. Maybe some relatives are aboard and children can be with them in that different and unfamiliar country, but they still feel lonely all the time without their parents around. And the new life may be too difficult for them to adapt quickly. People who they meet everyday are with different race, appearance, speak different language and have different living habits. All these wont make the children feel at ease. As for the children who go to aboard with the families, they also need to adapt themselves to a whole new world so they will also meet a ton of difficulties.Before going aboard, so many things should we pay attention to. The first and the most important thing is which country we will go to. Different country has different culture, background, custom, people and things like that. If we are intended to go aboard for study, we should know more about the education system of that country, which country is appropriate for you to apply for, the process of applying for that school, the general situation of the school and what kind of certificates should we have before we enroll in the school (such as IELTS or TOEFL).The other question is whether you are going to live in the school dormitory or in the accommodation house. If your answer is the later one, you need to find the house which is willing to take you in before you enter the school.If we are intended to go aboard for work, the first and the most important thing is what kind of jobs we want to occupy, and what kinds of jobs the country needs most is also the essential information that we must figure out. If you want to be a cook, you need to participate in training courses and get the chef card which can prove that youre eligible to be a cook. Even if you are an excellent cook with a chef card, it doesnt mean you are able to find a good job in any country. If the country youre going to go already have had enough excellent cooks, you cannot elbow your way into being a cook easily there. All in all ,before going aboard, search information as much as possible about what kind of job you want to do and what kinds of job it needs most badly ,in case you have paid ,but get nothing.After youre on the ground of other countrys, you need to know their culture, custom and curtsey as soon as possible and as comprehensive as possible. Culture gap will prevent you from being polite and native-liked. The first thing you must know is the table manners, because you can never have meals at home all the time, and the bad table matters will make your rude on the dinner table. Table manners are different among different countries. Lets take American for instance, at the very beginning of a meal, always put the napkin on your lap first. Before you leave the table, fold the napkin and put it beside your plate. As the meal is served, use the silverware farthest from the plate first. When eating something in a bowl, do not leave the spoon in the bowl and put it on the plate beneath the bowl. Do not pick the bowl up to hold it closer to your mouth. When you have finished your meal, place your knife and fork side by side on the plate, this signal means that you have finished eating. And while eating, remember not to tale with your mouth full of food. What have been talked about is a part of the table manners, you need to find the others by watching how native people do when their on dinner table and practice.Secondly, you must pay much attention to the taboos of other countries. When you meet a stranger, you can talk with him/her about the weather, the culture and some thing like that, but you shouldnt ask his/her family, salary, because these are their privacy. In the United Kingdom, number 13 is a taboo. Because English people think the number 13 will bring them bad luck and while youre chatting with the local people, do not make jokes with the Royal Familys affair. In a word, when youre aboard, youre a newer there, so you have a ton of things to learn and in the process of that ,you cannot avoid making mistakes, what you have to do is get used to it and do not make the same mistakes over and over again. You know what, practice makes perfect.Going aboard will never be an easy thing for anyone. You have thousands of millions of information to search, you have hundreds of thousands of things to pack, and you have dozens of forms to fill out.
