Two miles into the ocean, their boat began to have some problems. They managed to fix the problems, but decided to head back to shore anyway. However, before they could call for help or grab a life jacket, an eight-foot wave slammed hard against their boat and overturned it, throwing both men into the cold Alaskan waters.Stranded, they beg an to look around to see what they could grab onto and saw a couple of the empty fishing boxes from the boat, floating around. Ryan managed to climb inside one. Stonie, however, was not as lucky and managed to only grab onto the lid of the box. Soon, they both started drifting apart. While Ryan continued to bob up and down in the box, the waves started carrying Stonie away. But as luck would have it, he caught sight of one of the life suits from their boat floating in the ocean and managed to grab it. Though putting it on and hanging onto the lid at the same time was not an easy task, Stonie managed it and then began his long swim back to shore. He ended up on a deserted patch of land about 25 miles northwest of Sitka, where he had to wait until Saturday morning almost 24 hours after the fishing trip began, for rescuers to find him. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ryan continued to drift around the ocean trying to stay alive and hoping someone would find him. The brave teenager repeated himself over and over again, “Im Ryan Hunter Harris and Im not going to die here.” He was sure he would be rescued. Two hours after his friend was rescued and able to guide the Coast Guard and, 26 hours after the adventure began, Ryan was finally found and brought back to shore. What was amazing was that besides a few scratches, the youngster was in perfect health. Will he ever venture out on a fishing trip again? Only time will tell!4. We learn that on Ryan and Stonies way back to shore, .A. they had expected they would encounter dangerB. they were struck by a big wave all of a suddenC. they tried to fix the problems of their boatD. they were frightened by many big waves5. However, before they could call for help or grab a life jacket, an eight-foot wave slammed hard against their boat and overturned it, throwing both men into the cold Alaskan waters. 由they beg an to look around to see what they could grab onto and saw a couple of the empty fishing boxes from the boat, floating around. The brave teenager repeated himself over and over again, “Im Ryan Hunter Harris and Im not going to die here.” He was sure he would be rescued. What was amazing was that besides a few scratches, the youngster was in perfect health. What was amazing was that besides a few scratches, the youngster was in perfect health. CThis week, a mammoth (猛犸象) possibly killed by humans 10,000 to 15,000 years ago was found in soy fields about 50 miles west of Detroit. It was found by farmer James Bristle and his neighbor Trent Satterthwaite, who were reportedly digging in the field. At first, they couldnt figure out what they were seeing.“It was probably a rib bone that came up” Bristle tells Ann Arbor News. “We thought it was a bent fence post.” Upon closer inspection, however, it became clear even to untrained eyes this was no fence post. “We knew it was something special.” Then they sped up the dig. After finding the bones Monday night, Bristle called the University of Michigan Tuesday morning to report his find. Scientist Daniel Fisher arrived to inspect it Wednesday, and by Thursday morning he had confirmed its a woolly mammoth. He concludes the animal was about 40 years old when it died. It was hunted by humans, he says, who killed it arid stored the remains in a pond as a way of preserving the meat for future use. Its still too early to tell exactly how it died, Fisher tells Detroits WWJ-TV, “but the skeleton showed signs of humans butchering.”The bones are being temporarily stored nearby, according to the Free Press, and it remains unclear where theyll eventually end up. Their research value will be determined once theyve been cleaned and dried.Woolly mammoths once lived in Eurasia and North America, and most disappeared by 10,000 years agoa demise (终止) that has been linked not only to humans, but also to changing climate. Its now believed that warming weather weakened their populations before humans dealt the final blows.8. How did James Bristle and his neighbor find what they found at first?A. Its delicate.B. Its old.C. Its unique.D. Its worthless.9. What can we know about the mammoth according to the text?A. It might die in its 40s.B. It was native to Eurasia.C. It preferred walking in the fields.D. Took their lives.C. Destroyed their home.D. Preserved their meat.【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第二段“It was probably a rib bone that came up,” Bristle tells Ann Arbor News. “We thought it was a bent fence post.” He concludes the animal was about 40 years old when it died. It was hunted by humans, he says, who killed it arid stored the remains in a pond as a way of preserving the meat for future use.和but the skeleton showed signs of humans butchering. B.DSelf-driving cars are so popular that the University of Michigan has even established a town called Mcity to allow car manufacturers to safely test their autonomous cars. While Mcity can be used to simulate many real-life road conditions, it cannot help test gestures drivers use to communicate their intention to other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. To find a solution, US car manufacturer Ford, with researchers from Virginia Tech, firstly considered using text as a way to communicate the cars intention, but decided it would probably not work universally. The option of using symbols was also discarded, because research shows that a majority of people do not have a good understanding of what they mean. Finally, the researchers settled on light signals. A white light warned that there were no humans in the car. A slow blinking one indicated that the car was coming to a stop, while a rapidly flashing light cautioned passersby that the car was about to accelerate. Then came the big challengetesting the signals on real road, “We needed to try out this new lighting to communicate the intention of the vehicle, but if youve got a driver behind the seat, you still have natural communication between humans,” said Andy Shaudt, who led the Virginia Tech research team. “So we needed to make it look like a driverless car.”The team designed a car seat costume that the driver would wear to cover his or her face and upper body. Of course, the drivers could see very clearly. The researchers then equipped the car with cameras to capture human reactions to a light bar on the windshield, which flashed one of the three signals when appropriate. Six drivers, all keeping their hands low on the wheel so as not to be detected, took turns to test driving the car through the busy streets. The overall reaction to the flashing lights was very encouraging. Who knew costumes could be useful for more than Halloween?12. What did the team use as a way to communicate the cars intention?A. Light.B. Language.C. Symbols.D. Sound.13. What does the underlined word “they” in the second paragraph refer to?A. Symbols.B. Drivers.C. Researchers.D. Flashes.14. What does a rapidly flashing light mean?A. The car was coming to a stop.B. There was no driver in the car.C. The car was about to speed up.D. The car was about to slow down.15. The car seat costume was intended to_.A. amuse the driverB. attract the pedestrianC. warn the cyclistsD. confuse the people【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. To find a solution, US car manufacturer Ford, with researchers from Virginia Tech, initially considered using text as a way to communicate the cars intention得知美国福特厂商最初考虑使用文本语言作为一种传达汽车意图的方法。 The option of using symbols was also discarded, because research shows that a majority of people do not have a good understanding of what they mean. 根据while a rapidly flashing light cautioned passersby that the car was about to accelerate. The team designed a car seat costume(戏装) that the driver would wear to cover his/her face and upper body. Of course, the drivers could see very clearly. The researchers then equipped the car with cameras to capture human reactions to a light bar on the windshield(挡风玻璃), which flashed one of the three signals when appropriate. If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed!
