When I got to college, I chose what I thought was a more practical path, studying physics along with public policy. That combination led me to atmospheric sciences. Now Im studying low clouds. But I didnt really notice low clouds until I started my study at the University of Washington, in Seattle. That city had a lot of low clouds. I suddenly realized how important their reflection of heat back into space was for Earths climate.I continued studying how clouds at the University of Colorado in Boulder. There I earned my PhD.Seattles skies may be home to plenty of low clouds, but there are even better places to spot these little clouds. The greatest gatherings tend to occur off the coasts of places like Namibia, in Africa, and northern Chile. These places are home to some of Earths driest deserts. And I like visiting such places. The more I learned about these little clouds, the more fascinating I found them. Im really interested in the various ways these low clouds respond to their environment. Because there are so many low clouds and they help keep Earth cool by reflecting(反射) heat, anything that affects them can also affect overall climate. It feeds back to the whole energy balance of the planet.Lately Ive been exploring how smoke that drifts(漂浮 )over clouds might change the way that these clouds absorb or reflect sunlight. Such smoke -from burning trees and grasses-can drift thousands of kilometers. If that smoke affects clouds, it might also affect climate. Last year, I spent a month on distant Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean setting up instruments to track the interaction(相互作用) between low clouds there and smoke from southern Africa. I appreciate the diversity in my work. Besides the occasional trip to distant islands, I also teach and work with other scientists to better understand Earths climate system. Along the way, Im helping bring one type of low clouds to the attention it deserves21.What do we know about the author?A. She learnt three majors at the same time in college.B. She wanted to study low clouds when she was a kidC. She knew the importance of low clouds when in universityD. She was always worried about climate change in the world22.Why does the author like visiting places like Namibia and Nothern Chile?A.Because she enjoys views of deserts.B.Because she loves visiting beautiful coasts.C.Because she has got tired of Seattles skies.D.Because theyre great places for observing low clouds.23. What was the authors purpose in spending a month on Ascension Island?A. To study smoke s effect on low cloudsB. To find the real causes of climate change.C. To set up instruments for other scientistsD. To study the influence of low clouds on climate.24. What does the underlined worddiversity in the last paragraph mean?A. The fact of being very specialB. The fact of working by oneselfC. The fact of being respected by othersD. The fact of including some different things.BDerek Rabelo is not the only surfer(冲浪手)to conquer Hawaiis famous pipeline big wave break ,but while all others use their sight to do it, this young professional surfer must rely only on his other senses. Thats because he is completely blindWhen Derek was boorn, over 24 years ago, he got his name from Derek Ho, the first Hawaiian surfing world champion. A surfing enthusiast himself, Ernesto dreamed that his son would share the talent(才干) of his uncle, a professional surfer, Unfortunately, Derek was born completely blind, but this didnt stop his family from believing that he could do anything he wanted, even if that meant becoming a surfer. At age 2, Derek received a bodyboard and the beaches of Guarapari, Brazil, became his backyard. He was always comfortable in the water and surfing was in his blood, but he didnt actually try riding a wave until he turned 17, when his father bought him a surfboard. His father taught him the basics and encouraged him to keep practising, but after successfully standing up on the surfboard, Derek knew he needed to become much better if he was going to achieve Emestos dream and become a professional surfer. So he joined the Praia do Moroo surf school, where he studied under coach Fabio Maru.Standing up on a surfboard and conquering small waves is one thing, while gathering the courage to take on Hawaiis board-breaking Pipeline is another. But thats exactly what Derek Rabelo set out to do just months after learning how to surf. Everyone told him it was too dangerous, but he felt he could do it. And he did, earning the praise of famous professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Now 24, Rabelo has been surfing the Pipeline every winter since.25.What does the first paragraph tell us?A.Good eyesight is necessary for becoming good suffers.B.Nobody has ever conquered Hawaiis big wave break.C.Derek Rabelo dreams to conquer Hawaiis big wave break.D.Derek Rabelo is the only blind professional surfer to conquer Hawaiis big wave break.26.How did Ernesto behave after Derek was born?A.He never lost confidence in him.B.He named him after his uncle.C.He sent him to a surfing champion.D.He started his own interest in surfing.27.After Derek was able to stand up on the surfboard, what did he do?A.He began to try riding a waveB.He was no longer afraid of waterC.He realized he still had a long way to goD.He knew his fathers dream had come true28.Which of the following words can best describe Derek according to the last paragraph?A.Skillful but proudB.Brave and confident.C.Courageous but stubborn.D.Thoughtful and modest.CI was always told by my dad to do everything by myself since I was young. One day my father brought me with him to change his car system. When my father and the technicians opened up the car system and took the system apart, my eyes were glued to what was inside immediately, especially the microchips(芯片)-I was thrown by the amazing possibilities they represented. That was the moment when my passion for engineering was sparked(触发). Since then I have loved to solve problems. Whether they are logical puzzles, or fixing appliances and furniture, I have always been an engineer at heart. As I progressed in high school. I was actually more exposed to the medical field. During my working at Princess Margaret Hospital, I realized this opened my passion for chemistry. In PMH getting medicine to patients sooner, I always found smiles on their faces.I knew my future career would include helping others, as was reflected in the 1, 000 volunteer hours I had spent during my high school years. I wasnt sure what I had wanted to be, but I knew what I had wanted to do; I wanted to aid people by using my knowledge of science, especially chemistry and physics.I also loved learning physics. Having a job, volunteering regularly, and being an active badminton player during the last year of high school made it a little tough but worthwhile. With the skills I learned about how to solve problems in physics, I will come out of school not only with experiences that taught me to be hard-working, but also with teamwork, perseverance and a passion for problem solving that will aid my future career as an engineer. To achieve my goal, I need to be equipped with the best knowledge and experience. Of course University of Toronto is an ideal place for me to acquire that knowledge and realize my dream29. The author intends to tell us in the first paragraph_.A. his father was a famous engineerB. his father made a great success in lifeC. how his father was strict with him in studiesD. how his idea of future career was developed.30.Which of the following can best describe the authors high school life?A.Decent and comfortableB. Hard but fulfillingC. Relaxing and colorfulD. Lonely but efficient31.We can infer from the passage that the author wrote the passage_.A. before graduating from high schoolB. in University of TorontoC. after he became famousD. before his job interview DIn 1905, as part of his Special Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein published the point that a large amount of energy could be released from a small amount of matter. This was expressed by equation E = me 2(energy = mass times the speed of light squared). But bombs were not what Einstein had in mind when he published this equation. In 1929, he publicly declared that if a war broke out he would “refused to do war service, direct or indirect” His position would change in 1933, as the result of Adolf Hitlers coming into power in Germany.Einsteins greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built because some physicists feared that Germany might be working on an atomic bomb. Among those concerned were physicists Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner. But Szilard and Wigner had no influence with those in power. So in July 1939 they explained the problem to someone who did: Albert Einstein. After talking with Einstein, in August 1939 Szilard wrote a letter to President Roosevelt with Einsteins signature on it, which was delivered to Roosevelt in October 1939.Germany has invaded Poland the previous month; the time was ripe for action. That October research of a-bomb began but proceeded slowly because the invention of the atomic bomb seemed distant and unlikely. In April 1940 an Einstein letter, ghost-written by Szilard, pressed the researchers on the need for “greater speed”.As the realization of nuclear weapons grew near, Einstein looked beyond the current war to future problems that such weapons could bring. He wrote to his friend about his fear about the future use of the a-bomb. The atomic bombings of Japan occurred three months after Germany gave in. In November 1954, five months before his death, Einstein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb: “I made one great mistake in my life when I signed a letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification- the danger that the Germans would make them”.32.What can we learn about Szilard and Wigner?A.They were not as influential as Einstein.B.They were responsible for the invention of nuclear weaponsC.They had cheated their friend Albert Einstein.D.They had an intention to destroy the world.33.Einstein realized his mistake of _.A. co-operating with his workmatesB. inventing the atomic bombC. publishing his equationD. signing the letter to President Roosevelt34.We can conclude that Einstein _.A. was important in the development of atomic bombB. was not involved in the invention of atomic bombC. directly participated in the invention of the atomic bombD. helped with the invention of atomic bomb35.The best title for the passage would be _.A.
