When we got to her house she found that shed lost her key. So, I waited in the cab with the dog while she climbed up the window.” “I waited and waited After half an hour of ringing the bell I decided to find out what was going on. I tied the dog to a tree and started to climb up the window. The next thing I knew was that the police came. They thought that I was trying to rob the house! Luckily, the woman came downstairs, shed gone to sleep and forgotten about me and the dog. I was in such a hurry to get away that I forgot to ask her for the fare(车费).”21. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment (公寓房间) in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich life-style of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series (系列) of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because Jones is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momands series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are Jonses in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.25. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _. A. want to be as rich as their neighbors B. want others to know or to think that they are rich C. dont want others to know they are rich D. want to be happy26. It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to _. A. live outside New York City B. live in New York City C. live in apartments D. have many neighbors27. The underlined word “neighborhood” in the second paragraph means _. A. a person who lives near another B. people living in an area C. an area near the place referred to D. an area in another town or city28. According to the writer, it is _to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. goodCIt has always been said that women are not good drivers, because they simply dont have very good driving ability. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women. From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age. However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating(积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily. To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.29. Compared with the past, nowadays many women _.A. have more accidents while driving B. prefer to have a driving license C. are somehow prevented from driving D. are the only driver in the family30. What can we infer from the passage?A. Teenage girls cannot take driving tests.B. Men didnt allow women to drive in the past.C. Women can easily pass their tests by taking driving lessons.D. With enough experience, women can become good drivers.31. The passage mainly talks about _.A. why men are better drivers than women B. men and their driving abilityC. women and their driving ability D. why more women like to have a driving license D Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. In one second, light travels about 300,000 km, but sound travels only 344m. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke come from his gun before the sound reaches your ears. This great speed of light produces (产生) some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays(光线)left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light which you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km per minute. In some cases(在某种情况下)the light from one of tonights stars started on its journey to you before you were born. Thus, if we want to be honest, we cannot say “The stars are shinning tonight.” We have to say, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago but their light has only just reached Earth.”32. If you stand 200 meters away from a man who is firing a gun to start a race, you will find out that _.A. you can hear the gun before you see the smoke.B.sound does not travel as fast as light.C. the sound of the gun will reach you before the man fires his gun.D.sound travels about a million times faster than light.33. Sunlight clearly _ than the light of the moon.A. has to travel a greater distanceB. moves less quicklyC. travels much more quicklyD. is less powerful34. The scientific way of saying “ The stars are shining tonight” should be_.A. the stars have been shining all the time.B. the stars seen tonight will be shining four years later.C. the stars were shining long ago but are seen tonight.D. the starlight seen today could be seen four years ago.35. The light of the nearest star you see tonight has been _ for years.A. on the earth B. on the moon C. away from the sun D. away from the star 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。My mother is a diligent and kind woman.
