Teaching procedures: Step1 leading in(3 minutes) Slide2: Our country has many natural disasters, what are they? (Fire, snow slide, volcano eruption, sandstorm, drought, typhoon, mudflow, tornado flood, earthquake) T: let us move our todays topic -earthquake. Step2. Pre-reading (5 minutes) T: At the very beginning, I want to know how much you know about an earthquake.(slide5, 6) Q1: What would you take with you if a quake happened?(open question) Q2: The best way to save yourself is to know there will be a quake before it happens. What kind of signs can tell you that there is a quake? People can see bright lights in the sky. The dogs ran anywhere and kept shouting. The pigs and the chicken are too nervous to eat. Animals are very upset, didnt calm down. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of rivers and ponds(池塘).There are cracks in the well. Q3: What kind of damage can an earthquake cause?S: buildings are destroyed; people are killed; families are brokenT: Slide 6: Lets have a look at some pictures of such terrible site. (Pictures of quakes) that is the pictures about the wen chuan earthquake, but today we will learn another big earthquake Step4.while-Reading (10 minutes)T: 30 years ago, on the day July, the 28th, a terrible disaster suddenly happened, and the beautiful Tang Shan was removed from the map. This is Tang Shan quake. Does any body know something about Tang Shan quake? T: Lets read something about the famous quake. Skimming & Scanning (8 minutes)T: First please skim the passage fast to obtain/ get a general understanding of the whole passage. And underline the answers to the following questions. Slide 71. What is the passage mainly tell us about? Earthquake in Tang Shan2. When did the earthquake happen? On July28, 19763. How many people died or injured in this disaster? More than 400,000 Slide 8 While reading, divide the whole passage into 3parts and find out the main idea of each part.Slide 9,10,11,12 Para.1 before the quake (Before the earthquake strange things began to happen but no one noticed them.)Para.2-3 during the quake(The earthquake destroyed the city of Tang Shan and shocks the people very muchPara.4 after the quake (The army came to help the survivors(生还者)bringing hope for a new life. Slide 13(Turn to page 27, ex3)Careful-reading (17minutes): Read the passage again and try to get more detailed information.Slide 14, 15,16,17,18T: Now we have finished the whole passage. Join the correct parts of the sentences. (Turn to page 27, ex1) check time (slide19)T: here is some more work for you. You can work in groups.T: Lets watch some pictures, and comparing the old Tang Shan, the Tang Shan after quake, and the new Tang Shan we see today.Step 4 Post-reading Group work (7mintues) Check: fill in the blank. (Slide 20, 21)Discussion Slide 23: Suppose there would be an earthquake, what should we do to keep ourselves safe?When you are your house, or in the classroom, what should you do?1. Dont be nervous and keep calm. 2. Dont try to run out of the classroom.3. Protect your head by putting your bag on your head.4. Sit down under your desk.5, Leave the classroom after the earthquakeWhen your are outside Move to an open space. Dont stand under a tree.
