Unit 5 Canada“The True North”Period 2 Intensive Reading Teaching aims:Knowledge aims:Let students read the passage and learn about the geography, population, main cities, natural beauty and natural resources of Canada.Skill aims:Develop students reading ability and let them learn different reading skills.Moral aims:Stimulate students to learn more about foreign countries and develop their sense of cross-cultural communication.Teaching important points:Get students to understand this passage and learn about some basic information about Canada.Teaching difficult points: 1. Enable students to understand the passage and talk about Canada.2. Develop students reading abilities.Teaching aids: A computer and a projector.Teaching procedures & ways:Stage 1: Leading in.Step 1: The teacher raises the topic - travel by asking the students some questions:Do you like to go sightseeing? Step 2: Ask one or two students to give their opinions.Stage 3: While-reading.Step 1: Skimming and Scanning.Give students 5 minutes to scan or skim for the answers to the following questions: What is the main idea of the passage? Why is the title given as Canada- “The True North”? Which topics in the form in Warming Up are mentioned in the text? Suggested answers: The passage is about a trip of two girls, and it tells us some information about Canada. Because the two girls took a trip across Canada by taking the cross-Canada train called “The True North”. name, size, natural resources, population, geographical featuresStep 2: Detailed reading.Task 1: Give students several minutes to read the passage carefully, and answer the following questions: (Comprehending 1 on Page35) (Before students read the passage, tell them that attention should be paid to the hints of the main places mentioned in the text.)Task 2: Finish the following true or false questions.1. They will take the train across Canada westward. (F)2. You can cross Canada in less than five days. (F)3. Vancouver is the coldest part in Canada. (F)4. It is so wet in Vancouver that the trees are tall. (T)5. Canada is a large country with a small population. (T)6. The ocean ships cannot go to Thunder Bay. (F)7.
