1. FriendshipA: What do you think about friendship?B: Everyone needs friendship. No one can sail the ocean of life single- handed. We need help from, and also give help to, others. A: Yes, I agree with you. In the modern age, people attach more importance to relations and connections. A mans power lies in his ability to give.B: The term, friend, covers a wide range of meanings. It can be a nodding acquaintance, a comrade, a confident, a partner, a playmate, a brother and an intimate.A: As life is full of strife and conflict, we need friends to support and help as out of difficulties. Our friends give us warnings against danger. True friends share not only joy but, more often than not, they share sorrow.B: With friendship, life is happy and harmonious. Without friendship, life is hostile and unfortunate. I have friends in the rank and file. Some are rich and in power, while others are low and common. A: To many of my friends, I know what to treasure, what to tolerate and what to share, I will never forget my old friends and keep making new friends. I read an article in a scientific journal that linked studying with remembering, based on recent research into the brain.A: Oh, whats that about?B: About principles like “Mental Visualization”, creating a picture in your mind of what is to be remembered.A: Ok, that does sound different. Is “Association” a principle, you know, you connect what you want to remember with something youre familiar with?B: Right on! “Consolidation” is another. I review my notes right after class and consolidate or absorb the new material into what Ive already learned.A: Youre moving ahead fast with those principles. I swear this weekend Im going to study sixteen hours a day both Saturday and Sunday.B: I have to remind you thats not the way. Follow the principle of “Distributed Practice”. Shorter study sessions distributed over several days are better.A: That system is very well for you; youve got a good memory. But what about me? My memory is not so good as yours.B: Youre too modest. Theres nothing wrong with your memory. But memory is like a muscle; it needs exercise. And dont forget it.A: Well, I will try what you said. Thanks for your advice.6. Beauty is potent, money is more potent!B: But money doesnt ensure happiness. Money brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health. We will be disappointed if we count on wealth or physical comforts alone for happiness. Happiness is not attained by accumulating wealth.A: Money, whatever form it takes, is essential for buying goods and services. For the rich, good education, travel, luxury and security are all readily available, while the poor attain these with great difficulty, if at all.B: But money in itself is neutral.
