Teaching Plan of Unit 3, Book 1 Understanding Science Text A Public Attitudes Toward ScienceTeaching Objectives:Students will be able to1. understand the authors idea of science2. understand the structure of the text;3. master the key language points as well as the grammatical structures in text;4. conduct the theme-based reading, listening, speaking and writing activities of this unit.Time Allotment:Four periods (three for intensive reading and one for Exercises)Teaching Methodology:student-centered; audiolingual; translation; communicative; etc.Teaching Procedures:I. Pre-reading tasks (warm-ups)1. Show Ss pictures of some interesting inventions, and have them discuss and figure out what these inventions are possibly used for (group-work), leading to the main idea of Text A that science is closely connected to our daily life.2. Warm-up questions: How does science change our life? Examples please. What attitudes we should take towards those scientific and technological discoveries and inventions?In what ways can we access science and get education in science?3. Background information: Stephen Hawking (1942-)l British theoretical physicist and mathematicianl See PPTII. Reading tasks:1. Group work: Divide the text into smaller parts and assign them to different groups. Ask the students to work in groups and do the following:Step 1: Read the assigned part, and try to understand its meaning. (general idea in English; translation in Chinese) Step 2: Ask and tell each other about the difficulties in understanding this part.Step 3: Make a list of useful words and phrases. Step 4: Choose one member to make a short report to the class.2. Text structure:(1) To make informed decisions about change, the public needs a basic understanding of science. (1-3)(2) What can be done to educate the public about the science? (4-6)(3) With an informed public, human civilization will survive. (7)3. Detailed reading:l Para. 1-3: What is the attitude of some people towards the changes brought about by science and technology? What was life like before science and technology began to change our way of life? What would happen if all government money for research were cut off? Is it possible to prevent science and technology from further development? Why or why not? What are general publics attitudes towards science and technology? Translate the sentence “The only way to prevent further developments would beare such that even this wouldnt succeed.” (Para. 2) into Chinese. In the last sentence of Para. 3“All it would do is slow down the rate of change”, why there is no “to” between “is” and “slow”? Frankenstein (Para. 3):Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, generally known as Frankenstein, is a novel written by Mary Shelley. The workers are able to solve the problems on their own initiative.2)used in the phrase “take the initiative”: be the first person to take action to improve a situation or relationship, esp. when other people are waiting for sb. else to do sth.【Examples】Why dont you take the initiative and arrange a meeting?12. slow down: become slower, or make sb. or sth. slower【Examples】It seems likely that the economy will slow down over the next twelve months. Steady, adj. firm in position or place; fixed. 稳固的;固定的; 【Examples】The governments policies have brought a period of steady economic growth with falling unemployment.adj. free from change, variation, or fluctuation; 不变的: 【Examples】Keep the camera steady while you take a picture. 1
