And Mary, in London, is eating more, sleeping more, and feeling depressed. In February, things become worse for her, but by April, Mary is back to normal. This pattern repeats itself year after year. Mary is not alone. There are others who suffer from the same problem all over the worldanywhere, in fact, where winter days are shorter and nights are longer.Researchers believe that Mary, and millions like her, suffer from a condition they call “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD for short). This condition is a kind of depression that comes with decreases in light exposure. They feel tired, depressed and easily get annoyed or angry. Their appetite increases so they gain weight. SAD, say the researchers, can affect anyone but most often affects women. Fortunately, there are treatments for SAD. People with mild cases may improve just by brightening the rooms in their house and getting exposure to more sunlight. Many people with more serious cases can find relief with a new light treatment. With this treatment, SAD sufferers get between 30 minutes to a few hours a day of extra exposure to a special light (one that is five to twenty times brighter than typical indoor lighting). By increasing their exposure to either natural or man-made light, approximately 75% of people with SAD get better.Medical researchers tell people not to self-diagnose (自我诊断). SAD, they say, is a serious condition. A person with SAD follows the same pattern each year. He or she has major depressions every winter, and things get back to normal in spring and summer. If you feel sad and easily get annoyed once in a while during the winter, you probably dont have SAD. The new light treatment is changing the lives of people like Mary. Mary can now enjoy the seasonal changes, just as most of us do. 54. What does “winter blues” mean? A. Feeling depressed in winter.B. The gray color of the season.C. Less exposure to light in winter.D. The new light treatment for SAD. 55. Why does the author write the passage?A. To inform us of the different patterns of SAD. B. To tell SAD sufferers to take care of themselves.C. To let us know the common knowledge about SAD.D. To encourage SAD sufferers to enjoy seasonal changes. 56. The passage implies that _.A. whether people feel well or not depends on weather B. enough exposure to sunlight is necessary to humans C. SAD sufferers weight increases along with the treatmentD. those who have depressions should get the SAD treatment DWith oceans covering 70 percent of the worlds surface, oceanographythe study of oceansoffers a world of career opportunities. Marine (海洋的) biologists study ocean life. From near-shore habitats to cold, dim waters kilometers under the surface, the oceans are home to various and amazing living things.Water chemists study the chemical composition of seawater. They also analyze the types and quantities of pollutants entering ocean waters. Using this information, environmental engineers seek ways to reduce pollution. Marine geography ranges from studying physical characteristics and designating international boundary waters to analyzing marine resources, coastal development, and offshore facility places. Doug Sherman at the University of Southern California Sea Grant Program studies coastal landforms. “On average, I spend one or two months a year doing fieldwork,” Sherman says. Meanwhile, marine geographer Ellen Raabe of the U.S. Geological Survey analyzes satellite photos and does fieldwork in boats to identify characteristics on and near the coast. “We do identify whats where,” she explains, “but actually, were looking at what the processes arephysical, biological, and human-causedthat create our coastlines and change them.”Marine geologists analyze underwater landforms and ocean-floor soil composition. “We want to look at the sea floor and figure out how it was made and where it came from,” says Ellen Prager of the U.S. Geological Survey. She has done lots of work studying coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and sand.“Marine engineering takes care of the design, specification, application, and operation of machinery used on ships, offshore drilling platforms, and almost anything that floats!” explains David Clark, a marine engineer at DC Maritime Technologies in British Columbia, Canada. Engineering furthers ocean travel and exploration today and in the future. Meanwhile, marine archaeologists discover the past by studying ancient seawater-covered places and sunken ships. “Almost everything people have ever made was carried at one time or another by a ship,” explains Texas A&M Universitys George Bass. He has found sunken ships from the Bronze Age through the 11th century A.D.57. Which would be the best title of the passage?A. A World of Career PossibilitiesB. Marine BiologistsC. What we have found in the sea was once shipped by the sunken ships.59. How many jobs related to the ocean are mentioned?A. 5. B. 6.C. 7. D. 8.60. How does the author state his idea?A. By presenting discoveries made by oceanographers in time order.B. By comparing marine biologists with other types of oceanographers.C. By listing career opportunities in oceanography and giving a brief description of each.D. By arguing that oceanography is an exciting science and supporting the argument with expert opinions.第二部分(非选择题 共25分)二、书面表达 (共20分)本题包含可供选择的(A)和(B)两道题,你可任选其中一题。根据(A)或(B)所提出的具体要求,在答题卡上写出一篇连贯完整的短文。词数不少于60。(A)1. In the end we wished each other the best of luck for the coming year, which would also be the final year of our senior high. What a wonderful time we had, and how I wished the party would keep going on forever! (B)Dear editor,There has been a heated discussion in my neighborhood about whether people should keep pet dogs or not. Some people think keeping pet dogs is really troublesome. Dogs always make a lot of noise. And their wastes pollute the environment. Whats worse, they may attack people sometimes. However, other people think its their right to keep dogs. Pets can make their life more interesting, especially for the elders. In my opinion, people can raise dogs so long as they can train them to be friendly to people. Anyway, its their right to keep dogs.英 语 试 卷二、单项填空 (共15小题,15分)16. In 1951, _ director of the Guinness Brewery, Sir Hugh Beaver, wanted to settle an argument about _ fastest bird in Europe.
