课文语法填空Unit 13 PeopleLesson 1 EQ:IQSuccess comes with a high EQMost students do an IQ test early in their school career. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is _determines _well they are going to do in life. When they see other students _(do) _(well) than them, they usually believe that those students have _higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do _(change) facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success _(be) not _ (simple) the result of a high IQ.While your IQ tells you _intelligent you are, your EQ tells you _well you use your _(intelligent). Professor Salovey, _invented the term EQ, _ (give) the _(follow)_(describe): At work, it is IQ _gets you _ (hire) but it is EQ _gets you_(promote). _(support) by his academic research, Professor Salovey _(suggest) that when _(predict) someones future success, their character, as _(measure) by EQ tests, might _(actual) matter _(much) than their IQ.Professor Salovey may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered _ some of the smartest students in your class, _you think _(deserve) good grades, sometimes end up _(fail) exams? Perhaps their _(fail) is because _their low EQ. People are often _(mistake) in _(think) that those with high IQs always have high EQs _well. This association can exist, but it is just as possible for someone with a low IQ _(have) a high EQ or someone with a high IQ _(have) a low EQ.It is _(general) believed _people with high EQs are open_new ideas and have positive attitudes _life. They are also less _(like) to _(trouble) by problems. On _other hand, there is little doubt _ people with low EQs often have problems _(get) on with other people and _(deal) with difficult situations; thus they have a _(hard) time _ (survive) in life.People _(general) believe that a persons IQ _(determine) by birth. However, most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do _education. Some are trying to study the _(possible) of _(improve) a persons EQ, _ (especial) in terms _“people skills”, such as _(understand) and _ (communicate).Professor Mayer, _(recognize) by many as a _(lead) expert in the study of changes to peoples EQs, _(recent)_(announce) the result of a study _senior high school students. When normal students were introduced _ students _disabilities, they found that, afterwards, the normal students were more _(will) to help people _difficulties. They also showed a better _(understand) of the disabled students feelings _(compare) to students _had not been _(involve) in the study. There was also an obvious change in the disabled students attitudes. They became more positive about life and more _(will) to try new things. The results of studies such as these show that EQs is as important, if not more important than IQ. _(get) ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means _(get) on with other people and _(be) able to understand and react _situations in the best way possible. This requires a high EQ-the _(high) the _(good). And the fact that it might be possible to raise EQs means that schools need to make sure that their students are receiving the education they really need, and know that their futures are not _(entire)_(determine) by their IQs.Lesson 4 First impressionsThe day that I met my best friend _the first time, I was full of _ (anxious). I was trying to do some _(revise) for an important oral exam in the local library and people kept _(disturb) me. I was getting more and more _ (annoy) and of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able_ (concentrate). The last straw was when I heard someone _(sing) behind me. The singing was _loud that I could even recognize the song! I turned around and glared_ the person _was singing. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile_her face. She was standing_a book_her hands near the “English Literature” section. She looked_a literary type and seemed very _(interest) in _she was reading. I glanced_the books cover. It was a book of Tennysons poems. The fact _she looked like a _(sense), _(friend) girl didnt matter. If anything, it made me even _(angry). In fact, Im surprised there wasnt steam _ (come) out of my ears!I picked up my books, glared_her and whispered _(angry), “Thanks _your noise, Ive been unable to study. Youre so selfish!”I still hate _(think) of that moment. Let me tell you the rest of the story though.Because I left the library_such a hurry, I left my most important textbook _. It was only_I got home two hours later_I realized Id forgotten it and there_nothing I could do_the library was closed. I was_upset that I almost cried. Just then, the phone _(ring). I answered it and a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After _(confirm) that I was, Jenny said that she had noticed Id left my book in the library and_my name was in it, shed asked a _(library) to get my phone number from their files. She said that she didnt live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it.I sighed with _(relieve) and agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road. I was so grateful! Of course youve guessed _Jenny was. She was the girl I had shouted _for singing. When I recognized her in the convenience store, I was filled with shame and apologized several times_my rude _(behave). I felt so _(guilt), but Jenny just laughed and told me she was glad to see that Id also left my glare in the library! I couldnt help _(laugh) at this and I invited her back_my apartment for a quick cup of tea.We got along really well and ever since then we _(be) best friends. Were very much alike and we tell each other everything. _(be) honest, I trust her more than anyone else. I often think how _(luck) I am. If Jenny hadnt been a kind person who was willing _(forgive) my shortcomings, I _(will) never have experienced such true friendship.Unit 14 CareerLesson 3The Road to Success As a child, Wang Junyan never dreamed of _(become) a famous person on TV. “I never thought about going on TV because my family didnt even have one_ I was in junior high school!” she explained. Now Wang Junyan is the _(present) for Universe TVs news programmes. I asked her _she had achieved success and she told me that _(be) curious, _(work) hard, and _(believe) in _was true made her the success she is today. “It was my mother_taught me to be curious. She had a great love of everything in the universe and she taught me to be _(interest) in mankind and nature, everything from plants_insects,” Junyan told me. “We would look in old nests to find birds feathers and we would even turn over stones to look at the little _ (create) there. I loved doing that,” remembered Junyan. She said, “My mother was a strong character. Although there were lots of difficulties _(overcome), she never let her problems defeat her. She worked _(extreme) hard to support me through school and during my time at Fudan University in Shanghai. ” Her attitude _ life will never stop _(influence) my _(think) and _(act). After _(graduate) from university, Wand Junyan became a reporter for a local newspaper. She said she chose to be a _(journal) because it is important _ people grasp_is going on around them. I asked her if there was any special moment _made her realize this and she replied_it was after she was asked to inspect an illegal business. Her report helped the people_had been affected and it also helped the government inspect the company and catch the _(guilt) people. “That is when I realized the _(import) of being a journalist, ” said Junyan. “_(write) that report wasnt easy, but I realized_people needed to know and so I didnt give up,” Junyan told me. This paid off because she won an award for the report. “I discovered then that as long as I am _(commit) and never give up I will be able to produce high quality reports.” Thats exactly what Wang Junyan has been doing as the face of Universe TV. I asked Junyan what she liked most about her job and she said that although there wasnt much glory in a reporters _(exist), she found it _(interest) and _(challenge). “Im never _(bore) with this job!” She added that as a reporter she needed many different skills and was _(constant) challenged to learn new things. Finally, I asked her if after many years she still felt curious. _ (smile)_(bright), she told me, “Nothing that I learned from my mother has ever left me. Today when Im looking_stories, I still feel like Im turning over stones to see what might be hiding beneath!”Lesson 4Survival of the Fittest“Between now and the 21st century, citizens of the worlds richest and most _(advance) nations will find it more and more difficult _(keep) up _ the demand for change. For them, the future will arrive too soon.” So begins Alvin Tofflers book Future Shock, _(write) back in 1970.Now people are beginning to pay attention _ Tofflers ideas because the speed of change is becoming _(increase) fast. It is sometimes difficult _ (work) out the patterns of change. What should you do? First of all, dont panic. Take a deep _(breathe) and try to get a sense of the good things the future has to offer. You dont need to be Einstein to predict the job areas _will be most _ (affect) by such change. Jobs in farming, coal mining and heavy industry are decreasing _(rapid). On _other hand, the service industry, the media and information technology are booming. Without doubt, the number of jobs in information technology will multiply. There are _(current) over 100,000,000 computers in the world and by 2020 there will be 10 _(time) more. Because of this, people _ work with computers will be in much _(great) demand. There are also many other important changes _(take) place. First, _ (few) and _(few) people will have a “job_life”. Because of this, workers will have to be more flexible. According to Mark Hastings of the Institute of Management, in the future, people will organize their working life around a _(various) of jobs, instead of _(work) just for one division of branch of a company._(similar), companies will operate in different ways. People will move around to do different jobs, rather than _(move) up in the company as before. Many more people will work for small, dynamic companies_can respond quickly_changes in the market. Other people will give up _(work) for a boss and start their own business. All this means_companies will require people _are flexible and can work on their own. They will also need people _ can work together and can get on _(good) in a team.Good communication skills will be _(extreme) important. According to Dr Laurence Lyons of Future Work, women will _(envy) because they have an advantage_this area. James Traeger, spokesman of a government training organization, explains that many men will have to _(retrain). “Its not about _(make) men more like women, but _(help) them to communicate as well.”Businesses will _(certain) become more international. English will probably remain the international business language, so dont bother _(learn) Russian or Spanish. However, _(understand) other people-their _(mind), culture and history-will be very important. Above all, a manager will need to feel comfortable _(work) with people from other countries and continents.New technology is the _(drive) force behind these rapid changes, so dont get _(leave) behind. You dont need to become a computer expert, but you must consider _(improve) your computer skills. Work with more than one program in case you have to use them at work, and try to read about new technology. There is no doubt_all this new technology is changing the way we work and _(offer) many other ways of working. Rather than _(go) into an office, a lot of people are _(connect) to the Internet and now work from home. _(work) like this allows you to live_you want, _(continue) your studies and _(enjoy) the _(comfortable) of _(have) a lot more free time. However, with all this change, lets hope that it also helps the people in poor countries_slave labour still happens. For the citizens of these nations, the future cant arrive soon enough.Unit15LearningLesson 1The importance of life- long learningNowadays, more and more people of _(variety) ages and backgrounds are continuing to study _(improve) themselves. Heres _they have to say _their life-long learning experience.Sun Wen 28 years old“Its never too late _(learn).” That was the advice I got after I failed my college entrance exam. Now Im about _(graduate)_ the School of Continuing Education at Qinghua University_a Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering_distance learning. Because_my new qualification, Im getting _(promote) at work.In the past, if someone like me _(fail) to get into university_the college exam, he would _(have) no chance of _(get) a degree. But its different now. I decided to give myself_second chance by studying for a degree_the evenings and_weekends while _(keep) a secure full-time job. _(frank) speaking, the last four years have been hard work, but its been worth it!Ms Tang 45 years oldThree months age, when my manager told me that I _(will) be _(lay) off, my mind went blank and my heart swelled_ _(angry). In the past, if someone _(work) for a company_over 20 years, they would _ (stay) there until _(retire)! I suspect that they _(lay) me off because the company was not doing that_(good) but it still brought a lump to my throat and made me _(want) to cry. I felt as if I _(did) something wrong! I know this isnt true though. Its just the status of the job market_the moment. At first, I enjoyed _(be) a full-time housewife and called myself “CHO” or “chief home officer”. But soon I got _(bore) and decided to do a business course. I have learn so many new skills and have already prepared a business plan for _ (set) up my own export company! I think that _(get)_(lay) off will prove _(be) the best thing _ ever happened_me.Grandpa Chen -75 years oldIm sure you all know the _(say), “You cant teach an old dog new tricks.” Well, its _(certain) not true! Im an old dog, and Im teaching _(me) new tricks every day!It all started a few months ago when postage went up. Id been sending letters _airmail to my daughter in the US once a week, but, suddenly, it was too expensive. I decided_ it was time I became an Internet _(use). I got my grandson_(instruct) me on _ to email and use the Internet and I really enjoy the speed at_ my messages get sent and answered. And aside_ emailing, its fun to see and talk to my grandchildren in the US on the i-Cam. In the past, if Id _(want) to see them, I would _(have) to visit them in person. So many people think that after you retire, all you can do is switch off your brain and bury everything youve ever learnt. This is so wrong!Anyway, its time for me _(go) now. I have to practice the alphabet! Im doing an English course_the Internet.Lesson3TeachersMy teacherGraham Lawrence, 29, science author _ _(give) presentations on TV, went to Overton School, 1981-1989.I _(see) Mr. Jenkins since I left school but I often think about him. I wasnt very good_most school subjects. I suppose I was a bit lazy and now I wish I_(did) more work, especially in maths. The only thing I can remember from school maths is_the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees! But when I was 15 and went into Mr. Jenkins class, I really became _(interest) in a subject _the first time. Before Mr. Jenkins, science had _(simple) been a subject full_strange words to me. I had no idea_an atom was and I didnt really want to know_ (too)! I found it all so _(bore) and difficult. But Mr. Jenkins made everything _(interest). He used to explain things with lots of _(practice) examples and simplified things_seemed _(difficultly). One day, he took us outside and we built a rocket! I remember that he let me pour some powder into the rocket and then another student _(light) a flame to set it off. It was great fun.I know that I wasnt a willing student and I _(should not be) so difficult at school, but it was probably because I lacked _(confident) in myself. Mr. Jenkins made me feel that I could do things. I was interested in astronomy and he asked me to give a _(present) to the class. That was really the first time I ever tried to explain science to an audience an now its my job! Often when Im preparing a programme, I think about how Mr. Jenkins _(would do) it. Sometimes I wish I _(can) phone
