Get students know how people get addicted to cigarettes and how they can quit smoking;2. Enable students to understand the importance of living a healthy life.Teaching important points1. Predict the main idea of the passage by reading titles;2. Get the main idea of each paragraph.Teaching difficult points1.Students learn to use the reading skills such as skimming and scanning to get the information from the passage;2.Clear the structure of the passage and the writers writing style.Teaching methodsTask-based teaching method; Discussion; Cooperative learning.Teaching procedures:Step 1 Lead-in 1. Ask Ss to read the sentence and try to translate it. He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything. 拥有健康,就拥有希望,拥有希望,就拥有一切。 2.Look at the pictures and draw a conclusion: Smoking is harmful to our health! 3. Do you remember the boy who is called Ali?(期中考试七选五阅读题)Step2 Pre-reading Prediction: Look at the two titles and answer the questions. (individual work) Who writes a letter to whom? Whats the purpose of the letter? (Answer: A grandad wrote the letter to his grandson James to give James some advice and encourage him to quit smoking.)Step3 Reading 1. Skim the text and get the main idea of each paragraph. (Tip: the first or the last sentence of each paragraph might be helpful) Paragraph 1 Grandads healthy life. Paragraph 2 The reason for writing the letter. Paragraph 3 Three ways to become addicted to cigarettes. Paragraph 4 The harmful effects of smoking. Paragraph 5 Grandads advice and wishes. 2.Listening (1) Listen to para1 and fill in the blank. It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle(古城堡). It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 kilometres in an afternoon. Its my birthday in two weeks time and Ill be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live. (2) Check the answers. 3. Read para2 quickly and choose the best answer. 4. Read para3&4 and get the important information.Information from para3&4 The ways to become addicted to cigarettes 1.Become physically addicted to nicotine; 2.Become addicted through habit; 3.Become mentally addicted. The harmful effects of smoking 1.Physical effects; 2.Effects on others; 3.Effects on sporting performance. 5. Scan the para5 and the internet page on P19, then answer the following question: How can you stop smoking?Step4 Post-reading 1. Read the text again and then answer the questions.(1) Which is NOT the effect of smoking?(2) What can we know from the passage?(3) Why do you think the writer mentions his own experience of smoking? 2. Discussion:What kind of person do you think James grandfather is? (Group work: each group gives two adjectives) Step 5 Summary 1.The reading includes two parts.The first part is a letter from a grandad. He writes to his grandson explaining how a smoker becomes addicted to cigarettes and why he should give up. The part gives advice about how to stop smoking. It is set out like a page on the Internet. 2.The best and easiest way is - never start.Step6Homework 1. Try to find some other useful ways to help smokers quit smoking. 2.
