.大学英语A6一、阅读理解 People with disabilities comprise a large part of the population. It is estimated that over 35 million Americans have physical, mental, or other disabilities. About half of these disabilities are developmental, i.e., they occur prior to the individuals twenty-second birthday, often from genetic conditions, and are severe enough to affect three or more areas of development, such as mobility, communication, employment, etc. Most other disabilities are considered adventitious, i.e., accidental or caused by outside forces. Prior to the 20th century, only a small percentage of people with disabilities survived for long. Medical treatment for these disabilities was unavailable. Advancements in medicine and social services have created a climate in which people with disabilities can expect to have such basic needs as food, shelter, and medical treatment. Unfortunately, these basics are often not available. Civil liberties such as the right to vote, marry, get an education, and gain employment have historically been denied on the basis of disability. In recent decades, the disability rights movement has been organized to fight against these infringements of civil rights. Congress responded by passing major legislation recognizing people with disabilities as a protected class under civil rights statutes. Still today, people with disabilities must fight to live their lives independently. It is estimated that more than half of qualified Americans with disabilities are unemployed, and a majority of those who do work are underemployed. About two-thirds live at or below the official poverty level. Significant barriers, especially in transportation and public awareness, prevent disabled people from taking part in society. For example, while no longer prohibited by law from marrying, a person with no access to transportation is effectively excluded from community and social activities, which might lead to the development of long-term relationships. It will only be when public attitudes advance as far as laws have that disabled people will be fully able to take their rightful place in society.1.A developmental disability _.A.develops very slowly over timeB.is caused by outside forcesC.occurs in youth and affects developmentD.is getting more and more severe答案:C2.Most disabled people used to die early because _.A.disabilities destroyed major bodily functionsB.they could not receive medical careC.they were not very well looked afterD.they were too poor to get proper treatment答案:B3.What are the two important obstacles that stop the disabled from participating in the society?A.Public awareness and povertyB.Poverty and lack of medical treatmentC.Lack of education and the right to voteD.Transport and public awareness答案:D4.In the authors opinion, to enable the disabled people to take their rightful place in society, _.A.more laws should be passedB.more public facilities should be set upC.government should provide more aidsD.public attitudes should be changed答案:D5.The best title for this passage might be _.A.The difficulties of the DisabledB.Handicaps of People with DisabilitiesC.The Causes for DisabilitiesD.Medical Treatments for Disabilities答案:ARegular child care provided outside home or by someone other than the mother does not in itself undermine healthy emotional connections between mothers and their 15-month-old infants, according to a long-term national study. The finding holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30 hours or more per week.Among infants who receive unkind and unresponsive care from their mothers, however, the mother-child relationship may be damaged. This research helps us put apart complexities regarding child care that have not previously been studied in detail, contends Jay Belsky, a psychologist. The investigation consists of 1,153 children and their families living in or near Boston. The youngsters, no more than 1 month old when they entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of 7. Experimenters administered questionnaires to mothers in their homes and videotaped baby caretakers interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6 and 15 months. Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and noted infant nervousness. Unlike most previous studies, this one allows researchers to observe each caretakers personality at child nursing, and kids emotional reactions by the equipment.6.From the first paragraph we know that _.A.mother care is the best according to a national studyB.child care outside home is the best in accordance with the studyC.regular child care outside home does not in itself do harm to mother-child relationshipD.connections between mothers and infants are damaged by outside care答案:C7.According to the passage, unresponsive care from a mother may _.A.ruin a kids growthB.harm the mother-child tieC.hurt a babys emotional reactionD.spoil a childs personality答案:B8.Jay Belsky implies that the study of child care _.A.was never carried out in the pastB.was not done much in detail in the pastC.was greatly ignored by psychologists and researchersD.was interesting but very difficult to make discovery答案:B9.The main difference between the investigation and the previous ones is that _.A.the researchers started with only one month old infantsB.the observers could rate the quality of child care efforts and analyzed them soonC.the researchers were able to give the questionnaires to mothers in their homesD.video equipment enabled researchers to observe what was happening directly答案:D10.Which of the following is NOT TRUE of the investigation?A.It will last at least 7 years.B.Cooperation from the mothers is also necessary.C.Some independent observers play a part.D.Researchers paid site visits to see a caretakers personality and kids emotional reactions.答案:D二、词汇与语法11.Young people should be _ to the old.A.respectable B.respectful C.respective D.respecting答案:B12.All of the _ in our school will attend a special meeting.A.women teachers B.woman teachers C.women teacher D.woman teacher答案:A13.They had to put the meeting off _ so many people didnt show up.A.since B.unless C.for fear that D.though答案:A14.Id like to explain the proposals _ we have received many objections.A.to which B.to where C.to who D.to what答案:A15.Not only Tom but also his wife _fond of watching television.A.areB.wereC.beD.was答案:D16.Scarcely had the storm stopped _ the earthquake took place.A.thanB.whenC.afterD.before答案:B17.They found the conditions there _.A.much improveB.much to improveC.much improvedD.be much improved答案:C18.The ice on the lake _ in spring.A.breaks downB.breaks offC.breaks upD.breaks in答案:C19.He had been having trouble _a hotel room.A.reservingB.to reserveC.reservedD.reserve答案:A20.The manager promised to keep me _ of how our business was going on.A.to be informedB.on informingC.informedD.informing答案:C三、完型填空As the plane circled over the airport, everyone sensed that something was wrong.
