A Every Olympics creates encouraging stories. Here are 4 memorable moments in U.S. summer Olympic history. Kerri Strug Gymnastics Women gymnasts from the Soviet Union had won team gold at every Games since 1948. Then came Team USA in Atlanta in 1996. They were in first place after three events. One to go: the vault (跳马). Kerri Strug was the final American. She landed and felt her left ankle crack. There was no time to know if her 9.162 score was enough to hang on to gold. Competitors get two tries at the vault, and the better one counts. Her coach asked Strug if she could vault again. “I will do it, I will, I will,” she replied. This time, she landed on both feet. Her score: a gold-medal-winning 9.712. Al Oerter Track and Field Six days before the final while practicing, Oerter hurt his neck. Medics told him it was the end of his career. But this was the Olympics. Blocking out the pain, he set an Olympic record. In 1968, Oerter was told he was too old to compete, but he made it. His final throw broke the Olympic record. No other athlete has won four successive (连续的) gold medals in the 第 2 页 共 11 页 discus (掷铁饼). Rulon Gardner Wrestling (摔跤摔跤) Rulon Gardner didnt stand a chance. In Sydney, Australia, in 2000, the farm boy from Wyoming faced Russian wrestler Aleksandr Karelin. Karelin had three Olympic gold medals and nine world titles. But no matter what Karelin tried, Gardner resisted (抵抗). With five seconds left, the “unbeatable” Karelin gave up. It was the biggest surprise in Olympic wrestling history. Billy Mills Track and Field The only person who thought Billy Mills would win the 10,000-meter race in Tokyo in 1964 was Billy Mills. No American had even come close to winning the race since it became an Olympic event in 1912. This “unknown” ran 45 seconds faster than ever before, setting an Olympic record and taking home the first and only gold medal for the U.S. in the event. 1. What happened to Al Oerter? A. He lost the 1968 Olympics.B. He hurt himself in the final game. C. He set an Olympic record with injuries.D. He gave up his career on doctorsadvice. 2. Why was Rulon Gardners victory a surprise? 第 3 页 共 11 页 A. He beat a powerful competitor.B. He hurt his foot during the match. C. He earned three Olympic gold medals.D. B Two years ago we didnt know him, but now we dont hesitate (犹豫) to call him “The One Man Army.” My family and I moved to the capital of Bangladesh, so I was to start a new school. On my first day I sat beside a boy whose name I dont remember. But within a few weeks I made many friends, so I didnt feel alone anymore. Anyway, I want to tell you about someone who was a little bit different but I wont mention his real name. Lets call him “Kaushik”. He and his friends were sitting behind me in class and they were talking about a city of my country which was actually beside my hometown. I turned back and asked them why they wanted to go there. From that moment on we became good friends. One day, Kaushik suggested making a short film where our friends were to be the actors or fill other roles. We liked this plan so much that everybody was eager to work and complete the project. He had made a plan to present this short film to a local film festival after its completion. Unfortunately, nobody stayed with him till the end. After a few weeks, everyone had slunk away or had restrictions (约束) set by their family. Kaushik also had a family restriction but completed the project and sent that to the local film festival, after struggling a lot though. This was just the start because it is his passion (酷爱). Whenever he wants to make a film, he doesnt stop till it is completed. Making a film requires a lot of manpower, money and many other things. The work of a story writer, scriptwriter (编剧), sound designer, director and others, all these things he does by himself. In this way, he plays the role of “The One 第 4 页 共 11 页 Man Army”. My circle of friends have big hopes that he will be very successful in what he has chosen for his future. 4. How did the author get to know Kaushik? A. By having a chat.B. By acting in his film. C. A. stick to their dreamsB. face difficulties bravely C. live in the momentD. go through fire and water for friends C In the future, people will work fewer hours a week, right? Actually, today, more people are working 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week, than ever before in modern times. People put in the same hours as workers in the 1860-1870s did. In the 1950s, most people worked a 40-hour workweek. At that time, people predicted that the workweek would continue to decrease. Today, people are asking, “When will I get some free time?” More people are working longer hours, for two reasons. One reason is the increase in the cost of living. In order to support a family today, people have to work longer hours or work at a second job. Take the example of Lily P. She works in New Jersey as a social worker from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. In the late afternoon and in the evenings, she sees private customers. On the weekends, she works as a caterer (宴会承办者). It costs so much to support her family, she says, that working less is not possible. But there is a second reason that people are working more than 40 hours a week. Today, many companies are trying to do more work with fewer workers. Employees feel that they have no choice. If they dont agree to work overtime, they are 第 5 页 共 11 页 afraid that they will be fired. Changes in technology make it easier for people to be working all the time. Elaine G. works a flexible schedule so that she can be with her nine-month-old baby. She spends 24 hours a week at the office. Then she works another 16 hours on her computer at home. She says, “My boss just wants the job done. If I dont finish the work, he thinks Im not really working at home.” With faxes, cell phones, and e-mail, people can work even when they are on vacation. Where will technology and the demands of the workweek take us? If things continue this way into the future, we may never get to leave the office, at least not for long. Or people may begin to say, “This is enough. I need my leisure (休闲的) time.” 8. What do we know about todays working time? A. It is longer than that in the 1860-1870s.B. It is shorter than that in the 1950s. C. It leaves little time for leisure.D. It continues to decrease. 9. Why does Lily work long hours? A. To make a contribution to the society.B. To meet her bosss needs. C. To feed her family.D. To kill time. 10. How does Elaine do her work? A. She works from home all day. B. She takes her baby to her workplace. C. She works for different employers in one day. D. She combines working at home and the office. 11. What influences does technology have on people? A. It provides more free time for people.B. It increases peoples work hours. C. It frees people from stress.D. It speeds up peoples work. D Do you want something different for dinner? Try some space food. Many scientists are living for months aboard the 第 6 页 共 11 页 International Space Station high above the earth. Its too expensive to carry food to feed people living in space. Therefore, people in space will need to grow food for themselves. But how can they grow food without soil and sunlight? Today, we already have hydroponic(水培的) vegetables. The science of hydroponics is not new. Many writers believe that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually a large hydroponic system. This system could have used fresh water that was rich in oxygen and minerals for the plants. Hydroponic systems need light. In addition to sunlight, hydroponic farms can use artificial lights. Instead of soil, hydroponic farms use mixtures of chemicals to feed the plants. And in addition to a natural climate, most hydroponic farms often use greenhouses. One advantage of hydroponics is that diseases and insects that travel through the soil are avoided. Another advantage is there are no weeds (杂草) to pull out. Farmers know how to grow a few kinds of hydroponic vegetables, such as lettuces, tomatoes, and cucumbers. But in space, people will need to eat more than salad. So scientists are learning how to grow hydroponic rice, beans and potatoes. As they do these experiments, they are analyzing their results and examining how to apply these results to a real life situation providing tasty meals for space travelers. The scientists make imitation meat dishes, such as carrot drumsticks, made from carrots, garlic, and bread, instead of chicken. How do these unusual foods taste? The scientists have been inviting a group of taste testers into their laboratories. So far, they have tested 200 different recipes (菜谱). The carrot drumstick dish was a hit. Perhaps soon, people will eat meals made from hydroponic vegetables that are truly out of this world. 12. Why do scientists grow space food? A. To reduce food costs.B. To support space travelers. C. To find new varieties of food.D. To increase agricultural production. 13. What is a must to grow hydroponic vegetables? A. Sunlight.B. Warm weather. C. Soil to grow the plants in.D. Chemicals to feed the plants. 14. What is one advantage of hydroponic plants? A. They dont get diseases.B. They arent affected by weeds. C. They can grow in a lightless place.D. They are bigger than common ones. 15. What is the authors attitude towards scientistsspace food experiment? A. Uninterested.B. Doubtful.C. Optimistic.D. Cautious. 第二节(共第二节(共 5 小题;每小题小题;每小题 2 分,满分分,满分 10 分)分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 第 7 页 共 11 页 Jamie Hinkle is my granddaughter, and when she was a toddler (学步的小孩), she sat on the steps of her familys swimming pool, enjoying the water.16 .
