Although his moral qualities are criticized by people, he was a tender husband and father and a self-made man, charming and modest as Mantel put it “clever as a bag of snakes”. Certainly, he is one of the best-documented figures from Henry VIIIs court. Extraordinarily driven and hard-working, he was such a productive reporter that he did not just date his letters; he timed them, too. It was not unusual for him to start work as early as 5 am and finish well after midnight. Sleep, it seems, was reserved for those less ambitious to secure the royal favour. Yet in researching my biography of Cromwell, I have also discovered most materials about him started from his middle age and there were very few about his childhood. The man who would once become the most powerful in England was of such humble origin that nobody can be sure when or where he was born.As a son of a blacksmith, he suffered a lot. I also had in mind the painting, which now hangs in the Frick Collection in New York, of a thoughtful but rather bad-tempered official. Until I read Wolf Hall, I had taken this portrait at face value: it seemed to describe the cruel man of business. But Mantels description of a rude and intelligent man who was as loyal to his family and friends as he was merciless to his rivals and enemies is utterly convincing. In short, he was the sort of man you would want to have at a dinner party, if not in your place of work. His last letter to Henry VIII, written from the Tower in June 1540, is desperately moving. “Most gracious prince,” he wrote in trembling hand, “I cry for mercy! Mercy! Mercy!” Henry was said to have read the letter three times before he made the last decision. But it was not enough to save Cromwell from the axe. Within weeks of Cromwells death, his royal master was regretting the loss of “the most faithful servant” he had ever had. There has been heated debate ever since among historians, novelists and film-makers alike as to who was the real Cromwell. 4. What kind of book is Wolf Hall? A. It describes how foxy Cromwell is. B. It criticizes Cromwell because of his moral qualities. C. It introduces an excellent politician with a good character. D. It speaks well of Cromwell in some ways. 高三英语试卷 第 4 页 共 12 页 5. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Cromwell was a middle-aged man of noble origin. B. Cromwell wanted to be a blacksmith like his father. C. Cromwell was a high official from a low background. D. Cromwell was misunderstood by the public. 6. What can be inferred about Henry VIII from Paragraph 5? A. He blamed others for Cromwells death. B. He hesitated for a while about killing Cromwell. C. He was the main reason for the debate about Cromwell. D. He didnt think about Cromwell any more. 7. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. The painting in the Frick Collection was the only picture of Cromwell. B. What Cromwell is like remains controversial among the public. C. Cromwells letter written from the Tower moved no one. D. Whether Cromwell should be killed caused heated debate. C New Englands only native rabbit species may soon be hopping in the wild in abundant numbers once again. The New England cottontail (棉尾兔) population has declined by more than 75 percent since 1960, mostly from habitat loss caused by development, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. There are now only five small populations across a range from Maine to New York. But conservation efforts for the rabbits are proving to be promising, the Associated Press (AP) reports. Captive breeding (圈养) and reintroduction efforts has helped the population on Rhode Islands Patience Island double to more than 150 rabbits. And two dozen rabbits released at a managed wildlife area in New Hampshire are expanding in numbers. Of course, since the habitat loss was the problem in the first place, its crucial to ensure the growing population actually has a place to live in. New England cottontails live in the young forests usually forests less than 25 years old. That means their habitat is threatened not only by development, but also simply by those forests aging, which thins out the habitat they need. Thats why scientists involved in New England cottontail conservation survey locations across the region to identify the best locations where rabbits can be introduced, and figure out how to protect and 高三英语试卷 第 5 页 共 12 页 maintain those areas. This can also involve selective logging to clear some areas for young trees to grow, which creates habitat for many species that make younger forests their home. The AP notes that the conservation plan has left some people confused, since it seems like wild rabbits are all over the northeast. But thats because its easy to confuse the New England cottontail with the much more common eastern cottontail. The eastern cottontail is native to North America but was only introduced to the New England area in the 20thcentury. 8. Why have New England cottontails declined in population? A. Mainly because they were killed in large numbers by hunters. B. Mainly because they didnt have enough food to eat. C. Mainly because they had few places to live in. D. Mainly because few people took good care of them. 9. What does the underlined word “logging” mean in the last but one paragraph? A. planting treesB. protecting forests C. cutting treesD. destroying forests 10. Why is the conservation plan confusing to some people? A. Because they see various rabbit species there. B. Because they dont think rabbits are worth protecting. C. Because they blindly think another species is more worthy to be protected. D. Because they mistake eastern cottontails for New England cottontails. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. Various facts about a rabbit species.B.Ahopeful wildlife protection case. C. Differences between two rabbit species.D. Conservation plans for protecting wildlife. D Nurses have saved almost 800 lives in just one year by using iPads, iPods and mobile phones to record patients vital signs instead of
