I found myself at a checkout counter behind an elderly woman seemingly in no hurry as she paid for her groceries. A PhD student with not a lot of money, I had hurried into the store to pick up some flowers. I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upcoming evening. I did not want to be late for this date.We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me. She smiled. It was a nice smile - warm and reassuring - and I returned her gift by smiling back.“Must be a special lady, whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers,” she said.“Yes, shes special,”I said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out.“Its only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling shesthe one,”Jokingly, I added,“The only problem is that I cant figure out why shed want to date a guy like me.”“Well, I think shes very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is obviously in love with her,”the woman said. “My husband used to bring me flowers every week - even when times were tough and we didnt have much money. Those were incredible days; he was very romantic and - of course - I miss him since hes passed away.”I paid for my flowers as she was gathering up her groceries. There was no doubt in my mind as I walked up to her. I touched her on the shoulder and said,“You were right, you know. These flowers are indeed for a very special lady.”I handed her the flowers and thanked her for such a nice conversation. It took her a moment to realize that I was giving her the flowers I had just purchased.“You have a wonderful evening,” I said. I left her with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers.I remember being slightly late for my date that night and telling my girlfriend the above story. A couple of years later, when I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me, she told me that this story had helped to seal it for her - that was the night that I won her heart.21. It may not be that the students who nod off at their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce (确保) bedtime. Instead, it may be that biologically (生物学上) these sleepyhead students arent used to the early hour.“Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies,” says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problem of adolescent (青春期的) sleep at Browns School of Medicine.Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time on adolescents. And, at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns.Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood, no less, as commonly thought.Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But its not just a matter of choice -their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns. All of this makes the transfer from middle school to high school - which may start one hour earlier in the morning - all the more difficult, Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the “sleep late, rise late” pattern(模式), adolescent are up against difficulties when it comes to trying to be up by 5 or 6 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their bodys way of saying. “I need a timeout.”24. The underlined phrase “nod off”(Paragraph 1)most probably means “ _”.A. turn around B. fall asleep C. agree with othersD. refuse to work26. What might be a reason for the hard transfer middle school to high school?A. Adolescents depend more on their parents.B. Adolescents need more sleep than they used to.C. Adolescents sleep better than they did at childhood.D. Adolescents have to choose their sleep patterns.27. What is the test mainly about?A. Adolescent health care. B. Problems in adolescent learning.C. Changes in adolescent sleep needs and patterns. D. Adolescent sleep difficulties.CI began working in journalism (新闻工作) when I was eight. It was my mothers idea. She wanted me to“make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself easily seen, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was suppertime, I walked back home.“How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.“None.”“Where did you go?”“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”“What did you do?”“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”“You just stood there?”“Didnt sell a single one.”“My God, Russell!”Uncle Allen put in, “Well, Ive decided to take the Post.”I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickel(五分镍币). It was the first nickel I earned.Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home. One day, I told my mother Id changed my mind. I didnt want to make a success in the magazine business.“If you think you can change your mind like this,”she replied,“youll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.My mother and I had foughtthis battlealmost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my fathers plain workmans life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. Your style - the way you dress up, the way you carry yourself, the trends (趋势) you follow - plays a key role in helping you stand out from the others. 31 The following tips can help you.1. Be yourself. Why be a second-rate version of anybody else when you can be the first-rate version of yourself. Nothing will help you stand out of the crowd more than your own features because there can be only one you. Everyone has their own belief, their own way of thinking, their own experiences that shape their styles. However, self-doubt and fear of disagreement drive many to give up their own ways and follow what everyone else is doing. 32 2. Keep an open mind.Open-mindedness helps you see things from a different way, understand others, find opportunities, and learn from others. 33 There are several styles that you should explore and determine which suits your own personality. Nobody knows what fashion you are enthusiastic about. But you should be clearly aware of your own true feelings about it.3. Keep up with the recent trends Fashion is always changing. 34 As society changes, so does fashion. Changing trends reflect the changes in peoples taste. Similarly, your senses of fashion changes as you gain more experiences in life. Keeping track of the latest fashion will help you redefine your style.4. Wear your confidenceYour attitude towards dressing can make a significant difference on how you look. You can wear a very beautiful dress, but if you cant carry it with confidence, it will not look good on you. 35 . Dont wear an uncomfortable dress just because everyone or your friend is wearing it. Remember, its okay to have your own style as long as you are confident with it.A. What worked yesterday may not work today.B. It is not absolutely necessary to follow every new trend, and you can enjoy the ones you like.C. Copying others will make you just another face in a crowd.D. Simply following the fashion trends or wearing expensive clothes will not help you get a distinct (截然不同的) style.E. On the other hand, even an ordinary dress looks great on people who wear it confidentlyF. Also, it tells a lot about your personality(性格).G.
