17、ing for an international company. Is that correct? David Jasper: Exactly. I am a lawyer. I get paid very well, but I usually have to work long hours. I work for an international company in Dallas, Texas, so I travel a lot in my job. At the moment I am working in Mexico, and next week, I am travellin
18、g to Germany. Interviewer: Oh, its good to work while travelling widely. But is it good to leave away from your family for a long time? Tell us something about your family. David Jasper: Im married and Ive got two children, aged 11 and 14. I rarely see my children because so much of my time is spent
19、 away from home. Ive got a beautiful house in the suburb of Dallas. Its very big, with four bedrooms. My wife is a home designer. Interviewer: Aha, how do you relax yourself in your free time? David Jasper: If Im home at the weekend, my wife and I sometimes play golf, but that doesnt happen very oft
20、en. We never have much time to relax together,Warm-up,Script,Interviewer: John, you are an accountant, right? What do you do exactly? John Cook: Yes. I am an accountant. I have a steady job in an office in London. I am responsible for laying out yearly plan and monitoring finance performance, and so
21、 on. Interviewer: That doesnt sound quite interesting. How about your family? John Cook: I live in the south of England but not in London. I own a comfortable house and have two children. My wife is an interior designer. She runs the home and doesnt earn as much as I do. I also own a peta dog, and t
22、ake it for a walk every day after work. Interviewer: Quite happy, ah? How do you relax in your free time? John Cook: After a hard day at work, I relax in front of the television or watch a video. I meet friends for a drink twice in the local pub. I eat in restaurants regularly, go to see shows, and

There is no doubt that the America of 2007 is far richer than the
24、America of 1977. There have been many changes because of this “richness”, for example: The houses are getting bigger. There are more leisure activities. 25、a survey was done to find out how happy Americans were. Thirty years later, a similar survey was done to see if American people felt happier. The below are the results of the two surveys. 27、ter, social position and work are met, greater wealth does not bring more happiness. The America of 2007 is far richer than the America of 1977. The average lifespan is 78 years, up from 74 years. Their homes are bigger and crowded with more modern home appliances (microwave ovens, personal computer
28、s, flat-panel TVs). But their happiness has not increased,According to a report of the National Opinion Research Centre at the University of Chicago, in 1977, 35.7 percent of Americans rated themselves “very happy”, 53.2 percent said they were “pretty happy” and 11.1 percent said they were “not too
29、happy”. In 2007, the figures were similar: 32.4 percent rated themselves “very happy”, 55.9 percent chose “pretty happy” and 11.7 percent chose “not too happy”. Similarly, in most developed countries, the degree of happiness has remained the same for decades. So why doesnt happiness increase with mo
30、ney? Some scholars say people want ever-bigger homes, because their friends have ever-bigger homes. But there is no extra pleasure in owning these bigger homes, because all our friends have them too. Meanwhile, buying the house may make people become more anxious; and they may regret sacrificing som
31、e leisureworking harder to buy the bigger home. 32、entally ill. Once someone has the income of those among the top two-thirds of a developed nation, it makes no difference to his or her happiness or mental health. A 25-year-old American today is between three and ten times more likely to be suffering from major sad feelings than in 1950. A normal mo
33、dern North American child would be considered as mentally ill by the 1950s standards. Answering the same questions, the average child in the 1980s experienced as much anxiety as patients of mental illness in the 1950s. Similar rates of increase of anxiety have been found in Britain as well,Para.5-6,
34、T,Reading Comprehension,If the increase of money does not bring more happiness, then personal or national economic growth should not continue to be the major goal of the majority of people or politicians in developed nations. Rather we should pay more attention to the basic needs of children, especi
35、ally infants. Scientific evidence suggests that it is the care we receive in the first six years, not our genes, that most decides our ability to enjoy our life. The earlier a child is neglected or treated rudely, or has parents who divorced, the greater the child suffers from mental disorder later
