1、Why Chinese student in Australia universities class keep quiet: In 2006 ,based on the statistics from Education Office of Peoples Republic of Chinas embassy in Australia (2007), 90,287 Chinese mainland students were studying in Australia , taking possession of 23.5 percent in total international stu

2、dents in Australia.However,the performance of students in their Australia class seems to be very strange and disappointed to their teachers and parents.From Volet(1997) article ,international students ,especially international students from South-East Asian , are viewed negatively compared to local

3、students.Therefore ,in this thesis ,the writer exams one article to analyse their opinions about why Chinese students always keep in silent in the class and evaluate the advantages and limitations of this research perspectives.IntroductionIn Australia , followed by transport and tourism,education be

4、comes the third largest service export ( Sawir 2005).International students are welcomed in Australia because they make contributions to local economy and the internationalizations.In the 1970 , in order to develop national economy and technology , Chinese government set up a policy to strongly supp

5、ort to enhance the interactions between Chinese and western scholars ,especially in education aspect ( Lampton, Madancy & Williams 1986).In 2006, based on the statistics from Education Office of Peoples Republic of Chinas embassy in Australia ( 2007),90,287 Chinese mainland students were studying in

6、 Australia, taking possession of 23.5 percentin total international students in Australia.From Volet(1997)article ,.Chinese students are thought as surface learners , passive non-participants in class and always like to company with other Asian students.Therefore ,in this paper ,my question is devel

7、oped based on this situation, wanting to find out the reasonswhy Chinese students always keep quiet in Australia university class.Literature ReviewsSomer elated researches have been done to discuss this question ,and what I will do is to look at his researchers , figuring out the methodology the aut

8、hor uses to study andfindings the author get, and put my comments on.Lu & Short ( 2007)believe that the main reasons preventing Chinese students effective studying and living in Australia are the linguistic, social background andlearning style.Among them,language barrier brings most, only 19 Chinese

9、trouble to Chinese international students.From their article , they ( 2007) claim that language ability really decides the success of students academic and social or emotional wellbeing and if it goes otherwise ,students will totally face failures and difficulties.The second important reason affect

10、Chinese students perform in the class is their cultural background which is deeply rooted in their mind to decide how they will act in a new culture context.In this paper ,the authors use qualitative research method to study the question and semi-interview is the approach they adopt.I think intervie

11、w is a good way to use for this research topic because authors list the content of the interview in this research paper ,making readers feel that it is like the interview between them and the interviewees and what they talk about in the interview are reliable and valid.But I think the limitation of

12、this article is the sample size is very small students attend this semi-interview.Although interviewsare a very time consuming research project, only 19informants is not enough.Evaluation of relativeadvantages and limitations of alternative research perspectives :Interpretivist approachOrlikowski an

13、d Baroudi( 1991)define the interpretivist approach is Interpretive studies assume that people create and associate their own subjective and intersubjective meanings as they interact with the world around them.Interpretive researchers thus attempt to understand phenomena through accessing the meaning

14、s participants assign to them. Interpretivism focuses on the meaning of peoples socialization and interactions,and use their language as a symbol to express that meaning ( Walter 2010).Based on their study ,thus ,I think interview is the most basic way interpretivist use to collect meaning or unders

15、tanding of each informant.Interviews provide convincing data for researchers to solve their research topics.However, it is limited by thetime intensity and budget restrictions.The time which is required to gather the data may limit the number of researchsubjects ,and the downsizing sample size may r

16、aise a question that whether the study is reliable or not.More interviews mean more time to be used by researchers to get the data and more money need to be paid to record or transcribe the interviews contents.Therefore, in Lu andShort s article , only 19 informants are asked to attend the research

17、and also they do not use random method to select informants and thus , the findings they get may not be generalized.And the other limitation is that individual interview is easy to take situational or personal factors into consideration, which makes it hard to draw generalresults.In Lu & Shorts article , 19 individual interviews , adding some personal reasons to affect the conclusion.It is hard to persuade readers agree with what the
