2、nglish so as to achieve better results. Students play the active roles in teaching. To cultivate students interest is also to improve their competences. Just as the saying goes: “Failure is the mother of success ,” we can also say , “Interest is the father of success. ” Most people think that good t

3、eachers are those who pass on all their knowledge to the students as empty vessels. However this may restrict students imagin ation and initiative in learning English. Sometimes students performances in class show that they are learning English mechanically and passively but not actively. Teachers s

4、hould not focus students attention on texts alone. Students should be taught not only to know about language , but also to be skillful about it. Good teachers should make teaching easier , funny , interesting , and effective. But often the students are not interested in learning English. Then how to

5、 improve students interest in learning English ? Maybe we can try the following methods: 1 The most important thing is to arouse students motivation in learning English Motivation is a contributing factor in second language (L2) acquisition.Motivation is defined as the learners orientation with rega

6、rd to the goal of learning a second language. Motivation is divided into two basic types : integrative and instrumental. Integrative motivation is characterized by the learners positive attitudes towards the target language group and the desire to integrate into the society in which the language is

7、used. In contrast , instrumental motivation is generally characterized by the desire to obtain something practical or concrete from the study of a second language , thus referring to a more functional reason for language learning. With instrumental motivation in mind, the learners may have very diff

8、erent purposes , such as to meet the requirements for school or university graduation , to apply for a job , to obtain higher pay, to read technical material , translation work or to achieve higher social status. Both integrative and instrumental motivations are essential elements of success. Learne

9、rs rarely select one form of motivation when learning a second language, but rather a combination of both orientations.To maintain students interest in learning , teachers should make the language learning process a more motivating experience which has obtainable short-term goals. As for teachers, t

10、hey should place greater emphasis on developing competency in all areas of the language. They should be communicatively competent. This can work to motivate learners as they are exposed to English speaking. Teachers can also design activities which may help to motivate students to improve their targ

11、et language proficiency. They can use teaching strategies which are not often called upon by other teachers or to encourage students to become more active participants in a lesson. The use of an interesting text can also help to increase the motivation. As for students , teachers should encourage st

12、udents to learn to take responsibility for their own achievements. In this way students not only learn to speak English , they also learn discipline and the rewards associated with achievement. 2 The importance of cooperation in English learning Keep the whole class engaged in the learning and do no

13、t just have the teacher up there lecturing for the whole class. Try to involve students in the lesson. If the students have to sit there for an hour straight and listen to someone talk they may get bored easily. To have both parts participate in lessons actively, it is advisable for teachers to assi

14、gn students daily reports and to assign some group discussions. Teachers can arrange activities for the class to do and group activities might be better. Teaching done in this way might offer a lot of fun and is highly memorable. Teachers may design topics related to the text or to some contemporary

15、 issues before explaining the text, then divide students into several groups to discuss. Usually each group appoints one person as a representative to show their opinions on the platform. Such a method can really motivate students participation in class. In order to build students interest in learni

16、ng English , teachers can also require students to make a performance based on the text that has been learned before. After class , students have to make a full preparation for it. Not only do they make up dialogues but they also learn them by heart. In this case , a very long and difficult text bec

17、omes simple dialogues. 3 To use internet as an educational tool This method includes internet phone conversations and email conversations. It is clear that conversations on the Internet provide a useful learning tool for the ESL/EFL classroom. This is because most students are interested in the curr

18、ent topic and even though such conversations may take place across thousands of miles , and between people who have never met except on the Internet , they are social activities , and social activities tend to engage students interests. However teachers must be sensitive to those students who may no

19、t yet be ready for email. Such students may need special preparation. Requiring them to do what they are not ready to do will lead them to have little interest in the activity. This is an activity that requires students to practice several skills, including English reading comprehension , comparing

20、information , and summarizing and reporting in English. 4 To use English songs to improve students listening and speaking Its an innovative and efficient method to use English songs to improve students interest in listening and speaking. The method of using English songs to improve students listenin

21、g and speaking indeed requires more from the teacher , who should both have an excellent mastery of English and a high ability of music. English songs cover a wide range of subjects. The language is beautiful and poetic and the music is graceful and rhythmic. Apart from this , English songs also ref

22、lect a great variety of foreign cultures. Listening to English songs can arouse the learners interest in learning the language , and this method also embodies the teaching principle , “making learning an enjoyable thing.” Teachers had better choose good listening materials and apply them scientifica

23、lly. Generally speaking, popular English songs with positive contents suit the purpose. At the same time , the songs should be typical and enjoyable as well. Such songs will enlighten students mind, cultivate their sensibility and improve their standard of appreciation. Pay attention to using differ

24、ent opportunities to let the students listen to different songs. And before playing the songs, teachers had better give a brief introduction of the cultural background of the song , and go through the new words. This helps the students better understand the song. For example , before the arrival of

25、Mothers Day or Fathers Day, the teacher can first play a song about parents , such as STRAW HAT, FATHER AND SON etc. , then organize some discussions about parental love , the generation gap and so on. The students will become more devoted in learning English when they can display the charm of Engli

26、sh successfully. For different students, teachers should choose different levels of songs according to the learners level. College students between the first and second year may listen to songs of intermediate levels. The subjects can focus on friendship , love , peace and nature and so on. For the

27、third and fourth year undergraduates, they can listen to various songs with higher levels. 5 Let students learn English by embracing their own Chinese culture and make lessons relevant to life If teachers can make the lessons relevant to their life and incorporate culture into the lessons , thats he

28、lpful. For example, before Christmas comes, the teacher can let the students talk about some topics connected with Christmas and ask students to recall important and special festivals in China. The students usually can know more western cultures by comparing Christmas with Chinese Spring Festival an

29、d so on. They can also contrast Christmas with other European festivals. When giving lessons concerning symbols of foreign countries , the teacher can encourage students to have a discussion about symbols in China. When learning the text about Trends for the 21st century , teachers can encourage stu

30、dents to discuss topics about population , food production , energy , and health ; moreover , students should be encouraged to imagine any possibilities that might happen in the 21st century. When they talk about these topics , their views might be quite interesting. Therefore , by mentioning things

31、 students are familiar with, teachers can greatly stimulate students interests. 6 To build teacher- student s relationship and make preferable comments often People often say :“ love is one kind of psychological need of people. Art of teaching German educationist also said isn t ability of teaching

32、, it is encouraging , waking up and caring. ” Teaching English requires a great deal of skill and patience. It is an effective means to build the teacher- student s relationship. If teachers often give students love , or cares for their health and life , students will put their heart into studying with enthusiasm and interests.
