What would you do if you failed? Many people _y choose to give up.However, the surest way to suess is to keep your direction and stick to yourgoal. On your way to suess, you must keep yourdirection. It is just like a lamp, guiding yo

、u in darkness and helping youovere obstacles on your way. Otherwise, you will easily get lost or hesitateto go ahead. Direction means objectives. You can getnowhere without an objective in life. You can try towrite your objective on paper and _ke some plans to achieve it. In this way,you will know h

、ow to arrange your time and to spend your time properly. And youshould also have a belief that you are sure to sueed as long as you keep yourdirection all the time.

We often hear people say, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination. A personwho believes in them will keep trying to reach his goal no _tter how _nytimes he fails. In my opinion

、, the quality of determination to sueed is animportant one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up. One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieveanything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at somethingnew, so we should not feel discouraged

、 and should try again. Besides, if wealways give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and growas people. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from ourmistakes only if we _ke a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson wehave learned is wasted. Finall

、y, we should never give up because as we work toreach our goals, we develop confiden _, and this confiden _ can help us sueedin other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin todoubt our abilities. In short, it is important that wedo not give up when working for our goals.

、Whether we sueed in the end ornot, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to bee better, more confident people. Furthermore, if we give up, we have non chan _ ofattaining our goals, but if we keep trying, there is always a chan _ that wewill sueed one day. Thank you !

I know what youre thinking. You think Ive lost my way, and somebodys going to e on the stage in aminute and guide me gently back to my seat. (Applause)

、I get that all the timein Dubai. Here on holiday are you, dear? (Laughter) Come tovisit the children? How long are you staying? Well actually, I hope for a while longer yet. I have been living and teaching

、in theGulf for over 30 years. (Applause) And in that time, I have seen a lot ofchanges. Now that statistic is quite shocking. And I want to talk to you todayabout language loss and the globalization of English. I want to _ you aboutmy friend who was teaching English to _s in Abu Dhabi. And one fine

、day, she decided to take them into the garden to teach them some nature vocabulary. But it was she who ended up learning all the Arabic words for the local plants,as well as their uses - medicinal uses, co _etics, cooking, herbal. How didthose students get all that knowledge? Of course, from their gra

、ndparents andeven their great-grandparents. Its not ne _ssary to _ you how important itis to be able to municate across generations.

But sadly, today, languages are dying at an unpre _dented rate. Alanguage _s every 14 days. Now, at the same time, English is the undisputedglobal language. Could there be a connection? Well I dont kno

、w. But I do knowthat Ive seen a lot of changes. When I first came out to the Gulf, I came toKuwait in the days when it was still a hardship post. Actually, not that longago. That is a little bit too early. But nevertheless, I was recruited by theBritish Council along with about 25 other teachers. An

、d we were the firstnon-Muslims to teach in the state schools there in Kuwait. We were brought toteach English because the gover _ent wanted to modernize the country andempower the citizens through education. And of course, the U.K. benefited fromsome of that lovely oil wealth.

Okay. Now this is the _jor change that Ive seen - how teachingEnglish

、has morphed from being a mutually beneficial practi _ to being a _ssive international business that it is today. No longer just a foreignlanguage on the school curriculum. And no longer the sole do _in of motherEngland. It has bee a bandwagon for every English-speaking nation on earth. And why not? A

、fter all, the best education - aording to the latest WorldUniversity Rankings - is to be found in the universities of the U.K. and theU.S. So everybody wants to have an English education, naturally. But if yourenot a native speaker, you have to pass a test.

Now can it be right to reject a student on linguistic ability alone?Perhaps you have a puter scientist whos a genius. Would he need the samelanguage as

、 a lawyer, for example? Well, I dont think so. We English teachersreject them all the time. We put a stop sign, and we stop them in their tracks. They cant pursue their dream any longer, till they get English. Now let me putit this way, if I met a monolingual Dutch speaker who had the cure for can _r

、,would I stop him from entering my British University? I dont think so. Butindeed, that is exactly what we do. We English teachers are the gatekeepers. And you have to satisfy us first that your English is good enough. Now it canbe dangerous to give too much power to a narrow segment of society. Mayb

、e thebarrier would be too universal.

Okay. But, I hear you say, what about theresearch? Its all in English. So the books are in English, the journalsare done in English, but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It feeds theEnglish requirement. And so it goes on. I ask you, what happened totranslation? If you think about the Islamic

、Golden Age, there was lots oftranslation then. They translated from Latin and Greek into Arabic, intoPersian, and then it was translated on into the Ger _nic languages of Europeand the Ro _n _ languages. And so light shone upon the Dark Ages of Europe. Nowdont get me wrong; I am not against teaching

、 English, all you English teachersout there. I love it that we have a global language. We need one today morethan ever. But I am against using it as a barrier. Do we really want to end upwith 600 languages and the _in one being English, or Chinese? We need morethan that. Where do we draw the line? T

、his system equates in _igen _ with aknowledge of English which is quite arbitrary.

And I want to remind you that thegiants upon whose shoulders todays in _igentsia stand did not have to haveEnglish, they didnt have to pass an English test. Case in point, Einstein. He,by

、the way, was considered remedial at school because he was, in fact, dyslexic. But fortunately for the world, he did not have to pass an Englishtest. Because they didnt start until 1964 with TOEFL, the American test ofEnglish. Now its exploded. There are lots and lots of tests of English. Andmillions

、and millions of students take these tests every year. Now you mightthink, you and me, those fees arent bad, theyre okay, but they areprohibitive to so _ny millions of poor people. So immediately, were rejectingthem.

It brings to mind a headline I saw re _ntly: Education: TheGreat Divide. Now I get it, I understand why people would focus onEnglish. They wan

、t to give their children the best chan _ in life. And to dothat, they need a Western education. Because, of course, the best jobs go topeople out of the Western Universities, that I put on earlier. Its a circularthing.

Okay. Let me _ you a story about two scientists, two Englishscientists. They were doing an experiment to do with geics and the forelimbsand the hind limbs of ani _ls. But they couldnt get the results they wanted. They really didnt know what to do, until along

、 came a Ger _n scientist whorealized that they were using two words for forelimb and hind limb, whereasgeics does not differentiate and neither does Ger _n. So bingo, problemsolved. If you cant think a thought, you are stuck. But if another languagecan think that thought, then, by cooperating, we ca

、n achieve and learn so muchmore. My daughter, came to England from Kuwait. She had stu _d scien _an

、d _the _tics in Arabic. Its an Arabic medium school. She had to translate itinto English at her gram _r school. And she was the best in the class at thosesubjects. Which _s us that, when students e to us from abroad, we _y notbe giving them enough credit for what they know, and they know it in their ownlanguage. When a language _s, we dont know what we lose with that language. This is - I dont know if you saw it o
