、Advantages and Disadvantages of Studying Abroad In the US, the number of university students who study abroad increased dynamically. 154,168 American college students studied abroad from 2000 to 2001 compared to 48,483 students from 1985 to 1986 (Rooney 4). The more students study abroad, the more o
、rganizations have to work flexible. “ Theuniversity has tried to track the changing interests of its students and the increasingly global nature of its curriculum by setting up programs in countries that did not attract as much interest a generation ago ” (Rooney 2). A decagdoe, the only destination
、s of studying abroad were in Western Europe, but there are many places for students to study abroad all over the world now (Rooney 2). Why students want to study abroad? For the reason, they can experience many amazing things. Studying abroad is not only to participate in classes at university but a
、lso to stay in different cultures and languages. To know other cultures is interesting, because bad manners in a country are sometimes normal things in the other. If you can speak more languages, we can talk to many people. Nowadays, it is very important to communicate with people who are from other
、 countries because of businesses and to understand other cultures. This experience will positively affect one sfuture. Furthermore, ways of thinking and knowledge will be wide and flexible. Therefore, studying abroad has many benefits. However, most students who desire to study abroad tend to think
、that they can experience only good things. This thinking relate to pamphlets because they only say good things. A studying abroad pamphlet says, “ Learna language, broaden your perspective, explore your identity, challenge yourself, increase your self-confidence and decision making skills, re-evalua
、te your priorities, values or goals, and discover a new or family cultural heritage” . If s read this, they will definitely feel like studying abroad, but they have to know opposite side. Besides, the most important thing to remember is why they go overseas. The purpose of studying abroad is, of cou
、rse, to study. Some foreign students die because of accidents or committing suicide. International students experience not only good things but also many bad situations. However, bad things are rarely showed in public. Actually, a Japa nesestude nt was killed in Australia last year, but we did not h
、ear any information after a few days of the first news. Students commit suicide rather than die by accidents. We meet with bad experiences because of the gap of cultures and Ianguages, or we just do not suit the coun try. We cannot predict un til we go to the country and stay .In additi on, these ba
、d experie nces affect our study. Moreover, the worse situati ons are, the more we feel homesick. Con seque ntly, everythi ng makes us frustrated. People who want to study abroad have to know both good and bad sides. There are mainly three adva ntages of study ing abroad, which are to be able to lear
、n foreig n Ian guage, experie nee fun thin gs, and study much harder tha n doing in their own coun tries. On the other hand, three disadva ntagesare predicame nts of com muni cat ing with people, gett ing used to a differe nt culture, and tendency to be with people who are from same coun try. One of
、 the most beneficial things of studying abroad is to be able to learn foreign Ianguages from daily life. To speak more than two Ianguages is necessity now because we have many cha nces to talk to people who are from overseas by bus in ess and even daily life. Most companies require us whether we can
、 speak another Ian guage or not today. It is not unu sual that people can speak more tha n 2 Ian guages fluently any more. It means that borders of each county are getting low, and more people go out from their own countries recently than a decade ago. “ Wethink Ianguage proficiency is one of the be
、st things that can come out of study abroad ” (Rooney 2). As she mentions, studying abroad equals to learn foreign Ianguage. Naturally foreign students can learn another Ianguage. The more they improve their Ian guage skills, the more they can enjoy their lives and make many frie nds who are n ative

Of course, you can feel differenee, but if you really want to experienee different culture, you have to stay there. Otherwise you will not un dersta nd the culture in depth. Ano ther adva n
、tage of study ing abroad is that you can experienee many interesting things. For example, there are different religions in different countries. Mostly, East Asian countries are Buddhism, Middle Asian is Islam, and Christianity is the one of the biggest religions in the world. There are many unique o
、r mixed religions all over the world. If students go to these certain places, they will experienee different religious and traditional events. It is also very important to un dersta nd other cultures and people. They might feel weird, stra nge, or eve n sad, and anno yed, but these feeli ngs help th
、eir thoughts wide and flexible because there is no right or wrong culture. My frie nd, Satoko Kogure, talked about her opinions of study ing abroad.“I enjoying study ing abroad in the US. I met a lot of people, and I couldget differe nt opinions and thoughts from them. I sometimes feel tired of this

I like talking about cultures with people who have different cultures ”ogure). She appeals to her emotions and characters. She men ti ons what sh

However, people who discrim in ated her recovered her. They had not con sidered her situatio n whe n they un derstood what foreig n people feel abou

Every one is also differe nt even if they are from same country. Thus, we cannot say that this ethnic group is right and others are wrong ” (Kogure). Th
、ere are no bad things to know other cultures. The third adva ntage is to study much harder. Local stude nts can un dersta nd what the teacher talks about duri ng the class, whereas intern ati onal stude nts have a difficulty of following classesbecause of the gap of Ianguage, so we spend much more t
、ime for study ing tha n stude nts who are n ative speakers. Moreover, i ntern atio nal students pay tuition twice as local students pay. It helps us study harder. Therefore, we have to study hard to get good scores and not to waste money. Actually, many foreign students get good grades and scholarsh
、ips. Moreover, if we do not have a strong will about study, we cannot gain anything from this experie nee, and eve n we cannot live in ano ther coun try. Hen ce, we are able to have con fide nee to try somethi ng new whe n we study harder and harder. On the other hand, however, stude nts who want to
、 study abroad should not forget that they would also experie nee sad, hard, and bad thin gs. One of the disadva ntages is stude nts are always facing difficulty of Ian guage. In classes, stude ntssometimes do not know what the teachers talk about, they do not know what to do, and they miss very impo
、rta nt in formatio n. Besides, they hesitate to ask what the other stude nts are doing. Because of that, people seem to think that intern atio nal stude nts cannot speak the Ianguage at all so that people sometimes misunderstand or even ignore them. Actually, most intern ati onal stude nts lear n th

Moreover, every Ianguage has difficult pronun ciati ons. Lan guage teachersca n un dersta nd what foreig ners say becausethe teachers h
、ave already gotte n used to liste n to foreig ners speak ing. But it is a little b hard for gen eral people to un dersta ndit. Thus, foreig n stude nts are disappo in ted to their Ian guage skills. Ano ther problem of com muni cati ng with people who speak differe nt Ian guages is there are many wor
、ds that have same meanings or similar meanin gs, or eve n a word has several meanin gs. Taking exams is hard for intern ati onal people. First of all we have to un dersta nd exactly what the teachers ask about. Eve n we use dict ion aries duri ng the exams, dict ion aries make us more con fuse. Con
、seque ntly, it takes more time to finish than local students. It is very interesting to know other cultures, but it is hard to live in another culture. We do feel differe nt and un comfortable livi ng in differe nt coun tries. There is a proverb, which is“ Whe n in Rome do as the Roma ns do ” . This
、 is true. If you behave as if you were in your coun try, you will be scor ned because what you do might be bad manner or taboo in the country. But we cannot imitate everything local people do, and we sometimes cannot respect what they do. These differe nces make stude nts annoy and frustrate. In add
、iti on, intern ati onal stude nts are sometimes discrim in ated because of their race and ethnic groups. Especially, discrimination against Arab people became severe after September 11th 2001. This is an article, which titled,“ So, where ai from ” , written by Kristina LaneThis is about the situatio
、n of Middle East university stude nts study ing in Un ited States of America after the accide nt happe ned. Actually, they are in the very difficult situation. They are dealt with in the same way as suspects. Many Arab students were arrested or detained as suspects of the terrorism just because they
、 are from Arabic countries (Lane 5). Even if they were born in the US, and have US citize nships, they are still discrim in ated because of their race. Unfortun ately, my In dia n frie nd was attacked by America ns. We do not know why it happened, but he said that it was becauseof his race. The autho
、r mentionsthat, “I view it as a clear message that this country does not want Arab stude nts to be in the country ” (Lane 2). She appeals emotions, whis what Arab students feel now, and how some America ns feel to them. Not only Arab stude nts but also people from all over the world have bee n dealt
、 with American government strictly. For example, it is difficult to enter the US now and to get any kinds of visa. We have to be checked more than before at the airports. Even we can enter the US luckily; we have to submit many certificates to the gover nment. Our all data is in putted into the comp
、uter. If you had a serious problem in ano ther coun try, who would you ask to help? You would ask to people who are from same coun try. You could tell them exactly and they could un dersta nd why you are worried. You would better to find some one whom you can trust in ano ther coun try. However, it
、is not good to be with some one who is from same country all the time. Once intern ati onal stude nts find some one who is from same coun try, they seem to be together any time. Whe n they feel homesick, they can encourageeach other, and it is comfortable to be the people. However, as a result, they
、 tend to restrict ourselves into the small group, and lose the chance to know the more diverse com mun ity. It does not make sense because we came to study ano ther Ianguage and make many friends who are native speakers. This is just waste of mon ey. In these advantagesand disadvantages, there are si
、milarities. In the case of Ian guage, if stude nts try speak ing a Ian guage to people who are the n ative speakers, they will improve their Ianguage skills. However, if they stick to only same ethnic group, of course, to study abroad does not mean anythin g. It depe nds on pers on whether study ing
、 abroad become their ben efits or not. As the same as Ian guage, what they experie nee and how they take things will decide worth of study ing abroad. Good experie nces make them eon fide nt, and they will think that study ing abroad is worth doing. On the other hand, even if they experienee bad thi
、ngs, they will learn something from the experiences, and these episodes will help them think wide and flexible. Either this experienee becomes advantage or disadvantage depends on stude nts will and en deavor. Nobody can help them, but every one can en courage them if they try hard. I won dered why I decided to study abroad. Whe n I decided to go to En gla nd, I just wan ted to learn En glish. I thought if it spoke En glish flue ntly, it could be advantage to get a job. I did not think anything more. However, after staying in England, I realized what I
